so! last night it suddenly came to me to re-purpose some old tires i have laying around as good armor pads. however i got two slight problems. i have no idea how to connect pieces of tire together in a secure manner. and and also i have no idea what it should look like. if anyone has any bright ideas of how to connect or of how it should look, or hell if you actually have plans or a photo of armor that already exists send it my way.

That would depend on the type of armor you want. There are many kinds, such as the famous breastplate, or chain-mail.

It might work if you attach those pieces of rubber to some kind of clothing that is thin and stretchy, like a swimming top.

Of course I have no idea of what you're planning to go against in this armour and how much you care about how it looks.

http://www.bing.com/search?q=How+to+Make+SCA+Armor

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) has been around for 40 years or so, and has developed a pretty significant base of knowledge around making functional armor from modern materials. The search above should give you a decent starting point. Good luck!
