Could Pokemon be considered an RPG?

Well, by now you've probably discovered that the communis opinio is that it is in fact an RPG. An RPG is basically a game where your choices define the character you're playing. And that will often become apparent through a leveling system and exploration. Pokémon has both those, so I don't see how you wouldn't call it an RPG.

No, stats does not make something an RPG. Which is why I think most JRPG's shouldn't be called RPG's.

Always thought of it as a JRPG, myself. You walk around the open world, exploring and doing whatever you want. Instead of upgrading your gear, you find and upgrade your pokemon. When you find an enemy in the open world, you go to a turn based combat system very much alike that of FF, or many other JRPGs.

It might nit be completely obvious, but pokemon is definitely a JRPG, and so, by extension, an RPG.

I really only called pokemon a RPG, what else could you really say that it is. You level up and take turns fighting.
