Other than money/time why didnt MW2 include both dedicated servers AND a matchmaking system? For that matter why don't most games? L4D seems to do it very well. Is there some sort of negative to it? Because I definetly can't see one other than the money/time it would take to develope.

Thanks, Cheers.

Well, the theory is that since dedicated servers meant user made content could be used, then PC gamers would most likely refuse to buy map packs and other DLC that modders could most likely create for free.

Isn't that how it normally is? PC gets the dedicated servers and Consoles get the matchmaking thing.. it's lame.

They probably figured that PC users were filthy pirates anyway, why waste the extra cash?

Because PC doesn't make the companies enough money to warrant caring about them.

iw reported that they spent more money making iwnet then if they had just put in dedicated servers. seeing how long dedicated servers have been a staple in pc gaming (since quake, almost 14 years), they arent difficult, time consuming or costly to implement at all.

sorry to say it, but that argument is invalid here.

I believe this is the main reason, money.

I've been saying this a whole lot since people have tried to argue the cost of development on the PC. The engine is the same as call of duty 4, recycling the multiplayer code costs very little. Developing matchmaking (especially without xbox live or PSN platforms which are designed for it) is both costly and time consuming. Cost was not a factor in IWs decision to remove dedicated servers.

I think they needed to get away from punkbuster, as it's broken and shit. They figured if they reworking the multiplayer, they might as well remake it so it worked with VAC, why not remove mods and set up a model that is subscription friendly while we're at it? Not like the game won't sell well.

If that was the case, it was a self-fulfilling prophecy.

In the past, I would have never dreamed of downloading a new game that I didn't already own.

But now... it's 44% downloaded and slowly creeping along. Because not enough people are seeding.

Well, think of it. If one person buys the DLC, then crafts the map for a server-side map with a few changes, its basically like IW is releasing maps to be made by modders.

Yes, indeed. If IW were really committed to making a better game, they would have enhanced the game by having both.

because if they included dedicated servers then IW would have to have some of their own which they would have to spend monry on running and maintaining them, its just easier to have a local host and for a large portion of people they dont experience bad lag, i didnt either that is until i got a crappy new router
