Nanomachines controlling every aspect of war, private military companies using war for profit, and nuke-launching mechs..

Could any of it be possible?

Completely possible and most likely gonna happen. Most likely the world of Ghost in the Shell, MGS are possible in our lifetime and very possible in our children's.

it is possible, but i doubt that everything will sort out as simply as MGS had it.

.....Your second point is pretty much happening already.
Nailed it.

And I believe the others could happen when technology is more evolved, but that's because I see technology as always evolving, whereas some people see where we're at as the point where the boom in tech growth slows down. I see it continuing, personally.

Walking mechs are stupid with regards to physics. They would be so poorly balanced.

And if they could find a way to compensate for that it would be unnecessary stress just fighting gravity.

But, if you mean politically and what not, I don't know, I haven't played those games :D

Oh, but nanomachines, definitely.

I'm gonnna have to say no simply because: you know that boss the sorrow? you know all those ghosts he summons? even if you believe in spirits existing in the corporeal realm there is no possible way for that much supernatural energy to manifest in one location. other than that yeah I think it's possible.

Foxdie style assassinations probably will.
PMC companies already fight wars for profit, starting wars would be pretty silly though (unless they were as big and highly trained as the PMC's in MGS4.

The Mechs are unlikely (Ray, Rex and Gekko sized at least), this was lampshaded in MGS 3 when the drunk Russian scientist tells Snake all about the Shagohod and rants about a professor Emmerich trying to make a bipedal tank.

Large bipedal tanks have several huge drawbacks:
Two/Four/Six legs are always slower than wheels, this is the reason we don't drive flintstones cars
Not exactly stealthy.
One small mistake means a fall, a 15-20ft fall will damage any sensitive electronics. The only advantage they have is the ability to handle much rougher terrain.

Ocelot/Fortune style bullet deflection, possible, very very very hard to get a magnet that strong but possible.

Man-portable Railguns, for when you need to kill a tank, on the other side of 3 other tanks. Massively expensive, delicate and unnecessary but again possible.

Optical camouflage, tricky, mainly because it would render you blind while it's on and it will be delicate as fuck. Octo-Camo is very possible though and I'm suprised there isn't one of these out there already.

Bandana's that give infinite ammo already exist, although Sylvester Stallone has the only one in existence.

Bullets are made of non ferrous metals, specifically Lead. (While there are some armour piercing bullets with a steel core, the vast majority of modern bullets are plain old lead.)

A magnet would have bugger all effect on them, and besides: the only way a magnet would deflect a projectile is if that projectile has an opposite magnetic force itself.

Plus, you would end up with every other ferrous metal object coming at you at speed if it was that strong.

So that's why we can't have nice things :(

Well that and what you do at night, you filthy person. :D

Your quite correct on the mechs and PMCs, and mostly right on Optical Camo.

Octo is possible, though we don't have the tech to do it just yet. Sure, you could make flexible screens into clothing right now, but you would need to have a decent camera to match patterns around you - and make sure they are in focus when you take the image. Then scale it properly for the suit and so on and so on. We could build it, but it would be utterly impractical at the moment.

I believe you'll find that a man portable rail gun has already been built and is actually on sale right now - http://www.thinkgeek.com/geektoys/science/a673/ . Although it can't actually kill somebody, and isn't a true rail gun since it uses magnets rather than electro magnets. But works on the same principles.

The bandanna, hum, fairly sure Arnold Schwarzenegger has one of those as well doesn't he?

While bizarre, I think that MGS was Hideo Kojima's warning to the world.

In terms of the technology, once the ScientistMans figure out how to overcome static friction then they shall be presented with another obstacle before perfecting nanobots.

As for politically, absolutely.

ANECDOTE TIME CHILDREN!
I was at an extremely boring job last year supervising a machine that runs automatically, so me and my colleague got to talking about video games, we spent an hour playing the guess the MGS plot thread.
"guess why guns only work with certain soldiers?"
"NANOBOTS!"
"guess what stops Naomi Campbell from dying of Cancer?"
NANOBOTS!"
"guess what makes Vamp immortal?"
"NANOBOTS!"
"what is FOXDIE made from?"
"NANOBOTS!"

Trust me, you had to have been there.

Only in Hideo Kojima's mind...
I jest; possibly the part about PMCs, but that might be a stretch. Ultimately though, you don't play it for the realism, more the craziness.

Some of the basic points of the storyline, possible. But I doubt we are going to get cyborg ninja's break dance fighting with immortal nanomachine vampires while fighting off mooing death robots anytime soon.

Shouldn't this be in gaming discussion?

and yes i think. in a very long time it will be possible, but still however in your lifetime. (unless of course your in your sixties)
