Thought about this after seeing the movie too.
I don't think I could amputate my own arm.

I think I would take off all my clothes and pour water on myself so I'd get really cold, then hopefully just fall asleep and die.
It's meant to be a really nice feeling apparently.

It kinda depends on what arm. Left arm, sure it'd be harder to carry big boxes and it'd hurt like hell, but I reckon I could do it. Right arm though? It might sound rediculous, but I don't wanna learn to do stuff all over again with my left arm.

No! Nononononononono!!!! Never, it just wouldnt happen, sweet Jesus. I'd much rather try to smash the rock with my pocket knife. If I DID actually try I'd probably faint and freeze to death, also I wouldnt know how to stop the bleeding. That said, after having your arm smashed under a rock for 5 data I think it kinda reduces the amount of pain you can feel in it

In order to amputate my right ANYTHING, you'd first have to provide me with something that will allow me to survive the next few minutes of probably and extreme blood-loss. Otherwise, my arm will be sacrificed for nothing. You should never sacrifice something if you can't gain the thing you sacrificed it for. In this case, if your life is even more forfeit because you couldn't stop the bleeding, then it's a desperate act that gambled and lost. And as for me, I don't know if I could unless you really got me in a bind like Ash from the Evil Dead movies, where his own body part is otherwise trying to kill him.

It would take me an incredibly long time, but I think I would get around to it eventually. I'd rather lose an arm than lose my life.

Besides I'm assuming that natural instinct will take over, what with a lack of sleep, immense physical pain and hunger taking over all your basic functions. I don't know, I haven't read the book or watched the film. But I'm guessing you have to have an incredibly strong mind to cut into bone for at least an hour, and that's after cutting into skin.
