Could you amputate your own arm?

There's no denying Aron Ralston was/is a very brave man. But he was also a really stupid man as well. He went rockclimbing alone, didn't inform people as to his whereabouts and didn't have any sort of emergency communication devices.

So I'd like to think I wouldn't get into that situation in the first place. But if I had to I'd like to think I'd at least try.

im incredably squemish and would probably faint before i get the job done
i.e if i his a man nerve or artery
and even if i did survive i'de probably have ptd from the event and depression because i couldn't play bass or do anything involving both my hands
not to mention i'de miss my severed limb
