I don't really get these "Could you love someone with [random trait]" questions.

I'm pretty sure I could marry a fucking elcor from Mass Effect if I liked one enough. If a girl (or genderless, shapeless entity as the case may be) had the ability to look like whatever she (it) wanted, that would actually be a plus as far as I'm concerned.

Well I can't fall in love with anything because I'm so jaded, but if I could... why wouldn't I date a shape shifter?
they could look like anything.
I mean what if I fell in love with a dude? that would be awkward because I don't want to do a guy. but a shape shifter could turn into a chick, then turn back after we're done. It would be perfect.

and if they could be things that weren't strictly human like a Khajiit or Fluttershy I'd be all over that.

Did I make it weird?
...
I made it weird.
Depends. How much of a joke was that Fluttershy bit?

It would depend on a lot of things, like how did it work, what kind of person were they(if they are a person), and what they did with it.

Though if they were actually some kind of cthulhu-spawn who could look like a hot lady, there's still the whole "Eldritch abomination" thing that concerns me.

Or if you found out your spouse was actually a were-(insert animal here) that occasionally goes out and eats the neighborhood stray cats at night, just to throw a interesting hypothetical in there.
I think that about sums it up for me too. If the shapeshifter I were to fall in love with were a Deep One, that would be a major deal breaker for me. I mean, is the shapeshifting all in my mind? What are my lips actually touching when I'm making out with the bikini model in front of me that is really a tentacled abomination from the deep?

If they were a human and just had no "default" form, I don't think I would have too much of a problem with it. I agree with others that it would take a lot of trust, but as long as "it" has a personality I enjoy, we could work it out.

If we're talking someone who is baseline human in their normal form (Mystique is a good example. Sure, she's blue and scaly, but at least she's got the right number of limbs.) then sure. It'd be a little strange, especially if he/she (frankly, I'd imagine it wouldn't matter a whole lot which they ACTUALLY were) had some identity issues stemming from their abilities, but I've dated women with less-than-stellar mental health records before, and it's far from impossible. Now if they're more like Double from Skullgirls

who doesn't look like much of anything coherent, and has to force her(?)self into a human shape day-to-day, I don't think I could hack it, even if they became anyone I asked them to.

Sounds like synopsis of a porno. Back on topic, sure. The real question though is if one can maintain a healthy trusting relationship with a shape shifter. I mean, everyone has boundaries you just have to respect. Unless the shape shifter in question and their partner are two perfectly well adjusted people, then there's always going to be the temptation to spy on their partner on the shape shifter's side and the paranoia of being spied on on the other end. It doesn't even have to be limited to snooping, there's probably a whole mess of problems associated with being with someone who can switch between multiple identities on the fly.

I was thinking about the character Mystique from X-Men. Having been played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence, it's easy to fall for that character. Even though she is blue. Not that I'm a racist. It's just usually when someone has blue skin that means they're dead. I digress.

I was thinking about the positives and negatives of being in a relationship with someone who can change their appearance at will. No doubt, it would be a complicated relationship that would require a lot of trust. Could you fall in love with someone who can change their appearance like Mystique?
Don't apologize, those fucking Blue people are whats wrong with America.

Look at him. Probably planning on stealing someone's car.
Hey, lay off the blue people. At least they have some moral fiber.

Now those PRAWNS on the other hand, those are the kinds you have to watch out for.

Always starting fights or getting arrested, going through decent people's garbage for cat food or breaking into houses to steal things to pawn for cat food. And then all they do is lounge around in free government-provided housing doing nothing but lowering their neighbor's property values and stinking up the place by turning it into a landfill. Our tax dollars are being used to pay these people to do nothing but commit crimes and pop out child after child for that extra welfare money. Then they just turn around and ignore them or let them loose on the streets while they spend it all on more cat food. And you know what's the worst of it? While feasting on the generosity of our overly liberal government, all they do is complain about how this isn't like their home planet and they just want to return to it (between mouthfuls of cat food illicitly acquired no doubt). Well EXCUSE ME. If our planet is so bad, why don't you just go back to yours? You came to US. You flew here in your ship (which to this day is still parked in our upper atmosphere and for all intents and purposes full functional) and took advantage of our kindness to live like royalty. It must be soooooo difficult doing nothing and be provided for while we foot the bill. THANKS SPACE OBAMA!

Maybe it's because I've been watching a lot of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine lately, but I wouldn't have much of a problem with it. I mean, I find Jadzia Dax hot, and she's lived multiple lives as both genders with a symbiotic slug living in her gut. If I could accept that then dating one of the Founders shouldn't be much of a stretch.[footnote]As long as they aren't part of the Dominion. That would possibly depend on what they looked like in their natural form. Them being able to change form wouldn't be a huge deal breaker, but if I found them repulsive in their natural form then I feel like id be lying to them. Other than that it would just require trust and honesty, like most relationships.

But hey. If falling in love with a shapeshifter involved falling in love with a blue Jennifer Lawrence then put me in, coach.
What if their natural form wasn't their true form? Lets say their natural unshapeshifted form is a repulsive blob. But they no more identify with that form than they identify with their Jennifer Lawrence form (to take, at random, some physically desirable form.) In fact, they choose to look like Jennifer Lawrence often and perhaps have come to identify with that form as a major part of their self image, if not their "true" form (because they have no true form.)

If they spent most of their time in a form I found attractive, sure. I could work with a shape-shifter, it would be fun to have a partner that could change appearance at will. I think the 'natural appearance' angle is a bit of a red herring, unless they spend most of their time in that form then it doesn't really matter what their default is.

It would be a tremendous bonus, particularly if said shapeshifter had a sense of humour and didn't mind making semi-frequent use of his/her power. Think of the hilarious practical jokes/ sex potential.

...That's another bonus, if he/she was willing to switch sex.

I see no problem with it. Even if they're a big tentacly monster. Big tentacly monsters need love, too.

I think that'd be a serious problem, actually, they'd wonder if you wanted to be with someone else. Like, imagine your significant other loved having you pretend to be Justin Bieber, with or without shapeshifting.
I just found my line in the sand. I would dump them.

Well, maybe Fluttershy is a bad example for a shape shifter. Because I want to fuck her because of who she is, not what she looks like.
unlike the Elcor, who's just sexy as fuck
I guess it would come down to how good of an actress the shape shifter was. then the question becomes how quickly do you get bored of sexual fantasy wish fulfillment?

you'd also think that someone who could look and act perfectly like anyone would have better things to do than date me

Would I date someone who could look however I want them to look at any given time? Yeah, I think I could work with that.

Oh yeah. Oh yeah I would. Very very cool. That'd be so cool that I'd fall in love with her faster than you can say "megacrush."

To answer the question, Yes.
It would be one factor in the relationship, and to my view would have more pros than cons.

Now regarding what you say here:

I was thinking about the character Mystique from X-Men. Having been played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence, it's easy to fall for that character.
It's another one of those cases where I find the character much easier to fall for because of what she has going on inside rather than looks.
For most of the DoFP movie Raven seemed - I guess the term I am looking for is "shell-shocked" - like she was numb or unresponsive to what was going on around her.
Then I thought about what she must have had going on in the years between First Class and DoFP I thought "Oh, yeah... that would be enough to leave most people kind of shell shocked."

Considering that Azazel is dead by the time that the movie is set in, during the interim Raven would have to have gotten pregnant, given birth and either given up or abandoned her baby.
Come to it, that's a huge motivation for her to be seeking to shut down people/organizations that experiment on mutants, since her child is easily identifiable as a mutant just by looking at him.

Technically everyone "shapeshifts" in a sense as they get older and their body starts to give in to entropy. So, yes.

"Could".

Doesn't mean they'd actually want to do that. I mean, what if your significant other turned out to be a big Shia Lebouf fan, and wanted you to look, dress and act just like him?

I wouldn't, but I also would't be interested in dating a shapeshifter who isn't into shapeshifting for pleasure. What good is that? I'll find one who is.

But that falls into the same category as any personality based aspect of relationships. People are into different things, so best to look for some overlap.

True.

...

Hang on, would you date a not shapeshifter that didn't shapeshift? Coz, isn't that much the same thing?

Nope.

I don't think I could ever really feel comfortable with them, nor ever really know if they were being honest with me or not. I'd like to think I would know the 'real' them, how they feel, or at least have a closer emotional connection because we have genuine feelings for each other, but I just can't see me being able to get past the fact that they can shape-shift flawlessly (I'm assuming like Mystique), so who's to say I would ever really know them? It would take great reserves of confidence and trust, and I don't know if I have that.

It doesn't help that most shape shifters are cast as spies and secret agents or assassins, which all make sense, but all have deception as a core tenant of the job. If they were hired more often as ergonomic testers, shifting body types to test products, or something, but nope. "Murder spy" is a primo vocation, and always has been.

On the other hand, ordinary non shapeshifty people can lie to others about things, and keep huge secrets and lies for years from SOs, so maybe I just have trust issues.

If I was a shape-shifter too, well, that might work, because our culture might be based entirely on deception and half- truths... which is kind of a cool concept, at least for a story. Or maybe we have special pheromones that we can instinctively pick up on in relation to each other, I dunno. That's all out of the scope of the question, I guess.

This was fun!

I was thinking about the positives and negatives of being in a relationship with someone who can change their appearance at will. No doubt, it would be a complicated relationship that would require a lot of trust. Could you fall in love with someone who can change their appearance like Mystique?
Could I? Boy howdy could I.

As long as the person is compatible romantically/emotionally/etc then i don't see how it would be anything but a positive that they'd have an ability that would make the more intimate parts of the relationship all the more interesting. The real question is whether or not a shape shifter would be able to fall in love with you (not you as in, KissingSunlight but the royal you) when fantasies come to light.

The nature of this ability would leave room for trust issues, of course. But what relationship isn't a potential trust landmine (emphasis on potential)?

Probably? I mean this is coming from a guy who is still single here!

The only issue I would have if she shapeshift into somebody I know and get me to talked about her behing her back per say.
