Could you kill a person?

I think I could if they were trying to kill me. I certainly know I'd TRY, but you can never say for sure until you're right in the moment. And if they WERE trying to kill me, I think I could kill them without a scrap of remorse.
Well, that may be putting it a bit overtheatrically, but yes, I agree that I could probably kill a true monster with ease as well. You'd call them "dead inside" but I'd just call them "monsters". The Norway butcher in the recent news for example. If I had my way, I'd spare all the effort of a trial, have him legally reclassified a monster rather than a person for his conscious, willing, deliberate, inhuman and monstrous acts, strip him of his human rights and destroy him, the same way we "destroy" animals that attack humans. Not for emotional reasons like revenge or "eye-for-an-eye" justice, but simply because he's a threat to innocent humans and should be destroyed. And I could take a gun and put a bullet in his head myself, without hesitation, then walk away unflinchingly as the body is doused in petrol and burned.Kaisar said:

Most people think they can when they're younger. Even I did. But as you get older you realize what it actually means to do it and start to realize they probably couldn't or don't want to. I would be surprised if more than 10% of the people here saying they would, would still say so once they pass 35.
All the people I've been with before they died have always talked about their regrets at killing something (usually animals). Taking a life is certainly something you never forget. And to understand what the weight of carrying that can do to your own life is the thing that will give you pause before saying you can. I could not. I don't want that life. I'm with Gandhi on this one.

Most psychopaths are happily walking around and will never kill a man, a lack of empathy doesn't necessitate murder unless you're using the definition of psychopathy that includes the need to kill in order to 'feel'.Arcane Azmadi said:

Anyway I would kill but only if needed. In self defence I'd normally be OK, I've had a lot of training in various arts and from various sources (marines, SBS and SAS come to mind outside of traditional martial arts) so I'm a more than capable fighter. However if a weapon is involved things do get hairy, one of the more common disarms with a knife, particularly with a skilled fighter, involves using it on them and most have the kill as the end goal, after all they may have more than one.
Similarly a firearm is immediate do or die, all disarms involving a firearm result in the death of the original holder and I would do so without a moment's hesitation.
Otherwise, no. If I can avoid it I see no reason, I'll take down the bastards of this world other ways and I will definitely take them on in a fight but I don't want to kill someone, it's not a nice thing to do. I can, however, do it.

However, there is the possibility that I would do it unknowingly. That is, as a child, I had terrible bouts of rage. Sometimes they were to the good: protecting a friend I had that was being bullied. Sometimes they were not. In these events, I would see red, and all I had in mind was the thought I must obliterate my target off the face of the earth so that not even a speck of them existed. I would preceed then to leap onto the person in question, and use everything in my arsenal, which often included bashing my head repeatedly against theirs. If it wasn't for being stopped by others, I am positive that I would have killed them.
I don't feel bad for the people that I hurt, a nugget of that rage still remains towards each of those individuals. But it does scare me a little to know that I'm something of a monster.

I probably could- I thought I had once.
It was over 10 years ago at school, where I choked someone unconscious when we were just dicking around. His eyes were still open when he hit the floor and that is really unnerving the first time you see it. My initial thought was not "Oh no! I've taken a life!" but rather "Oh no, I'm going to borstal/prison for murder!". Thankfully he came round.
I think it would take something pretty significant to make me kill someone though. A severe threat to me or a loved one. I'm generally pretty relaxed and don't look for violence in the street or really anywhere outside a training & competitive setting.
I think that's a common thing amongst people whose lives have a regular violent component, whether real (military, law enforcement etc.) or competitive. From reading the posts of servicemen here, as well as stuff guys like Forrest Griffin have mentioned, there exists within some people the ability to transition from a normal mental state to a setting where they're prepared to do extreme violence to another person almost at will, due to a compartmentalisation.
I wouldn't compare myself to these people, but even when sparring or competing, there's a feeling of wanting to smash the shit out of someone one minute, but minutes later, you're friends again. The human brain is weird.

Self defense? Not even a question. I could and probably wouldn't hesitate. My life owns everyone else's.
I see myself probably killing in vengeance too, if I could get away with it. Like if I was attacked and knew my attacker. I think I could do that.
