RPGs, there are the obvious new releases such as Fallout 3 and Fable 2, and if you're really interested I hear Super Mario RPG has recently been thrown onto the Wii Virtual Console for 800 Wii Points, one of the best RPGs ever made.

Final Fantasy 9, if you can find it since it's a bit rare.

IMO the best FF game for the PSX. It has a strange magic/skill system, but it's very easy to learn. The only problem IMO is that the game feels fast, even though it's difficult to finish under 12 hours.(after 12 hours, the strongest sword in the game disappears)

Square re-released a lot of its classic SNES RPGs for the PS a while back. Final Fantasy's IV-VI would really serve you well so would Chrono Trigger. These are games very similar to what you've enjoyed and they hold up EXTREMELY well over time.

If you want a western RPG flavour, you can literally get anything made by Bioware. They're all great.

Speaking of good series of RPGs... Any word on the release of Tales of Vesperia for the 360 in the EU yet? And I would recommend Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube. Easily the best RPG on the Gamecube.

oh i got another one, although it can only be found by ROM. If you like SRPG's go play Bahamut Lagoon, NOW. It's one of squares hidden treasures and it's fucking sweet, like a mix of FF and Fire emblem gameplay.

Oh and for the love of god, play Chrono Trigger if you haven't already. It's not only one of the best RPG's ever made, but it is in my eyes, the PERFECT gateway RPG. It's great for people starting out as it's got a great story, not too difficult, and easily enjoyable.

JRPG? I'm a fan of the old school and think that Final Fantasy VI hasn't ever been topped.
This. FFVI was an amazing, spectacular, fantastic game. And as I have mentioned elsewhere today, has the best soundtrack of any game ever, in my opinion (and I don't really care too much about anyone else's).

I'll recommend Earthbound and MOTHER 3 as soon as the people at Nintendo get their collective heads out of their asses.

Untill then, you should just follow the suggestions that everyone else has made.

The fan translation of Mother 3 is complete. I have played it, finished it, loved it, and am in the process of replaying it.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions! After I check all these out, I'm going to poor, but that's OK! It'll be worth it. For anyone newly viewing this post, please feel free to keep suggesting.

You have a Wii? I'd try to find a copy of Fire Emblem. If you're familiar with Tactics, or Shining Force, it's in a similar vein. Just be prepared to spend many hours on it.

The Disgaea series (1 and 2) are pretty good as well.

Final Fantasy Tactics (PS1), I have lost months of my life because it was so good and addicting. I think I'll pull it out again.

Judging by your tastes pretty much any High Quality JRPG will do you just fine. Also I'd like to point out that I've been playing RPG's as my favorite Genre since 1997, I know my stiff. Lets see...

If you like Final Fantasy 7, play FFX, you'll like it just fine.

If you like Zelda or Kingdom Hearts ... Try Okami, also Kingdom Hearts 2 is better than 1 in EVERY WAY, play it.

Persona 3 FES is good if you don't mind some serious grind... that and it is SATURATED by Japanese Culture.

Odin Sphere is nice if you don't mind repition and like Old School Beat em ups.

FFXII is a peice of High Concept Brilliance, but lacks strong Scenario Design and a punchy story, also it falls into some really slow bits about 60-70% through the game, but it picks up at the end.

Dragon Quest VIII is full of fun, but it is VERY OLD SCHOOL, be warned.

Shadow Hearts: From the New World has the best Turn Based Combat EVER and is pretty funny, it has a terrible story though.

Knights of the Old Republic is arguably the BEST Western Made RPG ever.

Earthbound is Charming and Brilliant, wait for it on the Virtual Console or just Emulate it (Fuck you Nintendo, give us Mother 3, What the hell is wrong with you!).

SMT: Digital Devil Saga 2 is excellent, it's got a really unconventional story and some very fun battles and scenarios.

Skies of Arcadia is Ultra Cliche'd, Ultra Traditional but at the same time Utterly Charming and it pulls off all of these aspects with grace and skill.

Steambot Chronicles is like Fable, except with Giant Robots and Steampunk.

Xenosaga 3 (read a Synopsis of the other 2) is extremely Satisfying, Very Fast Paced and provides 3 games worth of Epic Confrontations and Story Moments.

Baldurs Gate 2 is very good.

The World Ends with You may appeal to you through your love of Kingdom Hearts, they're similar except TWEWY has a better plot.

FFVI Advance is the best rendition of the classic, but it's just as hard to find now as the old cartridge.

FFIV DS is excellent, but very hard... and the story is as Cliche'd as you get, it is however very well conveyed.

KotOR and Planescape: Torment if you ask me (or if you don't mind ancient graphics and turnbased combat, then the entire Gold Box series from SGI and TSR but they are old and will only run in DOSbox). Balduurs Gate (I and II) are good as well, so is Neverwinter Nights (I and II). Morrowind is a sure thing too.

I just got a game called Fallout 3. It's good, but I don't know if there are better ones. It's a bit long, and takes place in post-apocalyptic Washington D.C., and the surounding areas. Like most games, the difficulty ramps up the longer you play. I think it's decent, but not the best game I have played.
Would say fixed, but more like 'Translated!' (edit: had to fix the spelling on the username as well)

I have a list to recommend as well, though I stick firmly in the realm of Western RPGs. Mass Effect is the best one I've played so far, though from what I've seen of Fallout 3, it may give it a run for its money. (Both are best on PC)
For a good PC exclusive, try The Witcher. Truly awful dialogue, and more double entendres than you can shake a stick at, but I've played it for a couple months now, and that's saying something. If you can get past the voice acting, it's quite a good game. $40 for the enhanced edition on Steam.

Digital Devil Saga

Best (J)RPG since Vagrant Story. The battle system is pretty-much perfect and the storyline is refreshingly mature and different. I like how stripped-down it is - the graphics have a very minimalist feel and there aren't millions of people to talk to or quests to do. It also provides an actual challenge, unlike a lot of recent JRPGs.
Digital Devil Saga 2 (Which continues the story of 1) is the better of the two, more story, quicker battles and less time spent crawling dungeon after dungeon.
