Could you turn the subtitles on, please?

Yeah, I always have subtitles on, even if I'm watching something in my native tongue.
I understand English when spoken perfectly fine, but I still like to have the subtitles - especially if someone's mumbling.

I always turn them on. It pisses me off to no end if I mishear some things being said and not knowing whether it was important to the plot or not. It could be because of the characters voice, accent, loud background noise (both in game and in my room) or any other reason.

There is also the fact that I'm not a native english speaker. And by that I don't mean to say I can't follow a conversation, but simply put: growing up, every foreign movie I watched was subtitled so I'm used to having them on for double checking even now when I don't need them. It's a force of habit. And also all of the things from the first paragraph.

I turn them off all the time, except with Japanese games, for obvious reasons.

The only time I've purposely turned the Subs on is when I was watching Attack the Block, couldn't understand a bloody thing they were saying.

If I ever can, I turn the subtitles on and switch to a different language. I find most video game voice acting to be terrible. Watching in a foreign language makes it somewhat bearable. I do the same for CG animated movies.

If I can only have subtitles then I switch them on. I'm not interested in game stories so subtitles help me to catch any information that might be important to the gameplay. There are very few games that I do not skip all cut scenes. Even on games I like I find them boring and slow-paced. The best games can give all the exposition they need in-game, during the levels. If they want to tell more of a story than that then they're using the wrong medium to do it.

I also always turn them on. Nothing wrong with my hearing. But english its not my main language and some accents are harder do understand. Like, for example, i can see and understand a full episode of Dexter without subtitles, except for the part where Batista talks. So I turn one subtitles most of the time because of the characters is bound to have a trickier accent.

prefer them on for gaming, maybe due to playing all of those games back in the day that couldn't have voice acting. gaming plot points can be confusing and i'd rather not re-watch an in-game FMV again to catch a detail i would have missed otherwise.

don't usually put them on for movies, don't mind them for foreign films or really heavy accented english (at least for the first time until i can 'hear through' the accent).

I'm hard of hearing so I generally have subtitles with everything (TV, movies, games), just to reinforce what I'm hearing.

Subtitles are awesome. I'm so used to reading them I don't find it distracting from the action at all, but I do read pretty fast anyway.

I do because I play a lot of action games, and these days the characters whisper or mumble an awful lot, but if I turned up the volume, the sound effects would be loud as hell.

This is exactly why I don't use subtitles if I can help it. That, and it detracts from the subtleties of the acting (though this is often less apparent in video game cutscenes)

Yeah it's always best to have subtitles on. Most of the time they're not necessary but it's good to have them for the odd incomprehensible speeches like Shirley at 0:20ish of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4WTkG4s0tU or Big Mike at 1:22ish of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeohJKqjH7Y
I didn't have a problem understanding either of those.
And I'm Irish, I can count the number of African Americans I've met on one hand.
Maybe you rely on subtitles too much to understand people =P

Especially bad when watching comedy shows. Over here they often hard code subs in with, well, pretty much everything they don't dub. So a couple of times when I was watching Live At The Apollo I actually took a piece of paper and taped it on our TV screen right over the subtitles. I don't want to get my jokes spoiled afterall.

So, I have been on a video game binge of sorts. While playing I noticed something. I turned on subtitles while playing Call of Duty: Black Ops for the fiftieth time. For anyone that doesn't see what is wrong here: I turned subtitles on while playing a game that is only played for military hardware and explosions. After sitting at the main screen, in which Alex Mason is strapped to an electric chair, for a few seconds I started looking back. I had an epiphany: I play every game with subtitles, and my hearing is good.

Does anyone else do this?
Thoughts on why I do this?
yepp, i do it for just about everything, i tend to multitask when i'm doing just about anything, so seeing what someone is about to say or just in case there are backgrounds noises in the room/house, it helps me always know what is going on.

some of my friends tend to get annoyed by it, anytime we watch some netflix or something i turn em on out of habit.

I always play with subtitles given the chance. In case my attention goes to the land of nipples and labias or if the voice actor mumbled a sentence and want confirmation on what was being said.

However, in games that have a crap story, I don't need subtitles because I simply skip the talky parts and just get to the action.

Besides, a game without subtitles is like a movie without subtitles. To me, they're being difficult for no reason.

i also turn them on most of the time. being dutch, i'm used to having subtitles on my movies, so i'm not annoyed by it. the main reasons i put them on because of to many back sounds so i can't hear what they are saying or because some words are not properly pronounced.

but i'm for the option, because sometimes i like it to have none.

I always have subtitles on in video games, I'm not entirely sure why, it just feels right.

Not for movies though, it's weird when I think about it.

I like to have them on, for me it helps with the immersion and it really helps in Left 4 Dead 2 with the special infected.

I do the same with games and sometimes even movies. I can hear perfectly well, but I like being able to read the dialogue. L.A. Noire was brilliant with the script/log thing in the menu. Saved my ass a hundred times.

Absolutely not, and it drives me insane if they're on by default.

The real crime is not including adequate audio sliders. Music must be halved, effects set at three-quarters, and voices? MAXIMISED! MUAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAH.
