Cover Based FPS?

How well do you guys think that cover based shooting translates to an FPS setting? The only game I can think of that made it look realistic and actually useful was Killzone 2. Killzone 3 also did it, but it almost never worked because you propped your head atop the chest-high-wall.

Are there any other FPS titles out there that actually use the mechanic? I'm not talking about games where you hide behind a box to heal, but games where there is an action button to attach to cover like Gears of War.

Not good. The problem being that I need to tell when I am about to get flanked.

I wouldn't mind a cover system, but I need one that allows me to see whats going on without having to just poke my head out each time.

Compare it to Gears of war. Gears allows me to see that someone has a sniper rifle 100 yards away without showing my head.
an FPS with a cover system may not allow me to do that. In that sense, I look up over the cover to find the bastard, and I am now missing an eye and 1/4th of my skull.

Its a view point perspective that really changes how I feel about it. (Also, in FPS I need to be moving alot so I prefer the CoD method of going prone or crouching behind cover.)

idk if any others use button system, the lean system works pretty good for fps, i don't see why you would need an attach yourself to the wall mechanic.

How exactly does the lean system work? Is that where you hug the wall and pop out for a few seconds before hiding again?

I would actually like a cover-based FPS. Where you put your back up to a wall and peaked out like Solid Snake before turning the corner to engage. I kind of like quasi-realism in games and this who lean thing isn't cutting it.

Deus Ex 3 is mostly FPS but has TPS cover mechanic. It looks kind of interesting, but could prove to be awkward in practice.

Ever play soldier of fortune 2? or fear? its where you hold q and you lean left, or hold e and lean right, you don't need to be behind cover to use it.

and the changing of camera really breaks the immersion for me. I can't say I'm looking forward to human revolution.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2 had a cover system.. You went into 3. person when you took cover. That worked pretty well.

Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 does that, but it switches into an over-the-shoulder view when you go into cover. It still works really well though. That's the only example I can think of.

EDIT: Ninja'd

Well, we could use the lean button if people still put it in.

No, that's where you press E or Q and you lean to the side xD No wall hugging needed.

Its not, its the exact same system used in R6 Vegas.

So what games use the Lean? I've never seen it in any of my shooters/

The very vast majority until recently. It got removed because pads can't really support it.

I really don't like these cover systems, controls used to be smooth and quick, now they glue you on a wall and let's play wack-a-mole.

Damn you reverse innovation!

It's been done plenty of times. Any FPS with lean could be said to have such a cover system. You don't even need chest-high walls, or an obsession with hugging inanimate objects. It's a very simple way of using cover, and it works well. It makes for much more enjoyable gameplay than the wallhugging seen in every single TPS ever.

That's good to hear. Now that I know the concept works I guess I just have to hope they don't botch it.

Maybe I'll try out this "Rainbow Six: Vegas" you speak of.

Edit: Also, every game I have played with a "lean" feature it seemed utterly pointless. It never moved the cursor position far enough be useful. The tilted screen on some of the games actually made it very disorienting, and I always found it easier to keep moving rather than stick to corners. Maybe it's something the Pros used, but I seemed to do fine without it in multiplayer.
