I find remakes to be pretty hit and miss. Some are fantastic, like this one:

And some are terrible. Luckily I didn't have to go looking for one, as you've conveniently provided one for me.

As long as it's not from Glee, but usually the original version of a song is the best version.

Mad World should sum this thread up nicely. A song first made to be a pop-techno type but later made to be sad and moving song.

Covers are awesome as long as it adds a new aspect of it never thought before. (Unless people constantly asked for it of course)

Funny you mention that, my favorite version of Madworld is the cover/remix of the cover. But also the Tears for Fears one is better than the Gary Jules one.

That was most offensively early 2000's band I've ever seen...<.<

OT: as long as they add their own personality to the song they're covering and pay tribute to the original artist...Nirvana tended to be good about this they even invited The Meat Puppets to play with them on MTV Unplugged when they covered their songs and heavily endorsed The Vaselines...<.<

also Johnny Cash does some Damn Fine Covers...<.<

I'm going to say something that might reduce my standing in the eyes of some of you, but...

I really, really liked Smash Mouth's version of "I'm A Believer".

As for "remade songs", do video game remixes count? Because I loved this one:

I love covers for the most part, as long as I like the song.

Covers are useless if you don't have some sort of attachment to the song, and they're almost always made as homages rather then pointing and laughing, and if it is about laughs, it's usually about stuff no one cares about anymore, like spice girls.

I mean, some are horrible, but I'll always give them a chance, and if they're not horrible, I'll probably love them if I love the original.

I'm a fan, but it really depends on the cover. As a positive example, Scala & Kolacny Brothers' cover of Bittersweet Symphony is freaking amazing.

A cover version should offer a new take on the song, change the style, pace or tone to get something new out of the material. If it doesn't do that, the cover is bland, boring and ultimately sub-par to the original.

That said, I don't have a problem with cover versions existing because at the end of the day, nobody is forcing me to listen to them. If there is a truly terrible cover version of a song that I love, I comfort myself with the knowledge that some people hearing it will take the time out of their day to track the original down and give it a listen. If nothing else, cover versions bring the original back into the public eye (or ear, rather) and so it will be heard by people who might never have known it existed otherwise.

Idoncurr; I love covers and remixes. I prefer creative ones that take it in a new and different direction, especially when someone remakes a song in a wildly different genre, but, hey, even ones that are basically just the same with different instrumentation work fine by me.

Seriously, folks, I listen to dance music. I would have practically nothing to listen to if I didn't enjoy remixes, remakes, mashups and covers. And almost everyone I listen to through 1930s-1960s does covers of well known staples. Every song I own by Julie London is a cover and she's one of my favourite singers.

A lot of covers of songs can be great and a great homage from one artist to another, Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt comes straight to mind or any of the Bob Dylan songs that the Byrds covered. I have started listenning to many an artist because of a cover version of one of their songs I've heard.

But then again there are some covers that should never happen, Light my Fire cover by Will Young should just of never happened.

I love it. It's a new angle on a work well done. Five Finger Death Punch's cover of "Bad Company" was AWESOME as was Seether's "Careless Whisper," HIM's "Solitary Man," and of course Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower."
