I'll nominate another one from Silent Hill 2 - James Sunderland. He's crazy in a far more disturbing way than any of the other obviously crazy people, such as Eddie. Of course, that's only something you can really look into once you've played through the game.
Indeed, but I think that's just because we play as him. I mean when Eddie's silent hill overlaps with james' we see a giant meat fridge, as opposed to basically just twisted versions of the locale that James had visited with his wife. Who knows what the entirety of silent hill looked like for him and what the depths were like in his mind were like. I kinda wish you could see more of it now, or that rather then trying to expand on the silly cult plot more games would take the SH2 and 4 approach and base them more on a character and their issues rather then the town and the cult.
Hm, that's a good point. It reminds me of James' final encounter with Angela, where she says "For me, it's always like this" -
very powerful stuff, but it also relates to what you're saying about how each individual character may view Silent Hill in a variety of warped and disturbing ways. However, since James' perspective was the only one available, he always came off (to me, at least) as the most "crazy" character.
I definitely agree with your second point - there's a reason that Silent Hill 2 stands out amongst the other games; this silly cult nonsense, although interesting
at first, gets old after a while. I really liked how the various books and notes you found throughout the game made some
reference to Silent Hill's disturbing past, without going into much detail. In my mind, that was the perfect approach - it makes the town seem all the more menacing without ruining its already mysterious nature. I haven't played 4 (unfortunately), but from what I've read, it takes a simlar approach.
