In the Fallout universe, there are a number of Vaults scattered across America to save lives from the nuclear holocaust. Some of these Vaults were actually social experiments set up by the government. For example.

Vault 68

Of the one thousand people who entered, there was only one man.

Vault 87
A Forced Evolutionary Virus research facility

Vault 106
Psychoactive drugs were released into the air filtration system 10 days after the Door was sealed.
