Good lord, all of my favourite holidays have come early this year, huzzah.

Edit: Just realised, how will this affect Bioware/EA and their rights to make games with the Warhammer I.P?

Hnng!

Good news. Very good news.

Now I just need to buy a new PC so that I can actually play the inevitable awesome results of this.

It means that Warhammer Online's death and rebirth as an MMO arena game will be their last Warhammer game.

Excellent! Maybe this will breathe some new life into the same-old, "realistic" settings of TW.

Been a 40K fan for a long time but never really got into Warhammer Fantasy, I like Total War games so hopefully it will be a reason to get into it.

This has the potential to be incredible, hope they include as many races a possible, and magic will be pretty awesome!

Total War on a galactic scale? Please? This might just be what I was waiting for. The unit cap mods for DoW can only do so much. Tyranids as the Golden Horde equivalent.. I think I need a drink. Disregard.

Still might be worth waiting for anyway.

I want to be excited but Creative Assembly has not ever demonstrated that they know how to make ranged combat work in an interesting way. Of course, I'll likely get it anyhow since I seem to play everything the make eventually anyhow.

Not going to happen. THQ still holds the rights for the sci-fi 40k franchise. Creative Assembly only acquired the rights for "Warhammer Fantasy".

OP, could you fix the title, plox :)?. They have not aquired rights to the entire Warhammer franchise, merely the Fantasy part. The 40k rights are still held by THQ.

Further to answer your question, I dug this up from wikipedia:
"Though Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is being developed by Mythic Entertainment, Games Workshop is also involved with the ongoing development of the project. Their role is not only to ensure that the project remains true to the Warhammer Fantasy IP, but also to work with Mythic to allow for the appropriate development and extension of the IP as necessitated for the MMO."

So it seems GW is actively working together with Mythic, ie. they don't need the rights? I'm not sure, this was all I could find on the subject :(

Well, I guess this'll be the Creative Assembly's first official foray into fantasy territory.

Good or bad, it'll certainly be interesting, and that's what we need more of, bravo!

As long as the games are better than the horrors that I found Mark of Chaos and Battle March to be I am really excited.

Christmas done come early!

I predict:

Chaos
High Elves
Empire
Orcs & Goblins

The absolutely most BORING armies of the Warhammer Universe will be playable leaving interesting armies such as Skaven, Lizardmen, Vampire Counts and Ogre Kingdoms forever in neglect, as is per usual of every single Warhammer franchise game. I will probably not buy it. Again. Still favour Dawn of War over ANY warhammer game ever released. I know it is in the 40K setting, but it actually adapted the tabletop campaign rules, that I really enjoyed in my time as a Warhammer player.

Recycling an old idea the good way. A long time ago there was this warhammer regimental based RTS game called Dark Omen.
That's basicly the game that the CA have been churning ever since the first shogun total war, minus the global strategic layer.

Ever since I played Shogun 1 I wished Creative Assembly would make a Fantasy Battle game since both are all about epic large scale battles.

It's good that 40K is staying in Relic's hands since they are the best ppl for small scale RTS.

If Skaven and Undead armies aren't included i'll be pissed.

Now if only Relic would do a Battlefleet Gothic RTS i'ld be a totally happy chappy.

I wouldn't be so sure, Creative Assembly tend to get quite a few real-life factions into their Total War games. If they make an a pretty much straight-up Warhammer Total War type game there'll almost certainly be more than four playable factions.
