Dear Escapists. I know you all know that Sony has recently been hacked and lost alot of Credit Card info, theres rumors that the info is up for sale and rumors people are starting to get $1000s of dollars in phoney bills.

This is why I use a Debit card. Debit cards are like credit cards in that you can use them for online purchases, Amazon, Ebay, Paypal, Xbox Live, PSN, ect ect. The best part is, that there is only ever as much money in there as you put in.

I personally look at what I want to buy, transfer that amount from my bank account to the debit card and then use the debit card. It only ever has the amount I need plus maybe $10 for fees or if I screw up an exchange rate conversion. So if you don't know about debit cards, I would suggest you go to the bank and ask for some information. Really Really Really good for online purchases.

If you lose the card or your info online, they can't ever get much off you.

I hope this helps those of you who didn't know how they work.

I already use a debit card, and I'm still reluctant to by anything online without a gift card.

actually there is much more protection in place for credit cards.

also while you are require to pay the first $50 for credit card frauds it can go up to $500 for debit card.

also many banks don't stop you when your account reaches zero, they just give you an overdraft charge and let you keep spending money.

so yeah...

Depends on your bank. I asked mine not to give me and overdraft, I also only ever have what I need and I use that almost instantly anyway.

If you keep $1000s of dollars on your debit card then yeah, it's not a good idea.

But I would rather lose whats on my debit card ($10?) then having to stuff around with the bank to find out which transactions are fake and which are real, redoing my credit card, and in some cases paying for a portion of the stolen money.

when using a debit card you have 2 days to notify your bank and fix everything while only paying $50

with a credit card you have usually 25 days (until the next payment period or so)
also with a credit card they are not stealing your money and even if they max it out it wont completely destroy you since all you need to do is make the monthly.

with a debit card if you don't deal with it in... 60? they can take every penny you have and there is nothing you can do.

still think in terms of safety the credit card is better. maybe it is just me, there are advantages and disadvantages to both
