Just about all of the original Silent Hill. Probably my own fault for playing it in a darkened room in the middle of the night with alcoholic beverages, but I loved / hated the psychological havoc it played with my brain rather than relying on zombies jumping out of doors Resi style to scare me.

The crackling radio? The snow? The fact I know something is out there but all I have in my hand is a bit of pipe? And don't get me started on the first time the world turned into the dark side...

First appearance of Slenderman made me go completely still for a second.

Also some movie actually gave me a legitimate "fuck..." in probably the first time in my horror movie watching life.

I should probably remember things like that.

I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it.
The Shalebridge Cradle.

the moment you first see one of...them...in a distant corridor, and the flickering lights...

First line from Mike Patton's Darkness. "Jaaacckkiieeee..."

Not scary, but Patton has a powerful, powerful voice that sends goosebumps up my arm. Euurgh. I'd love to hear a phone prank by that guy, mind.

I only played the first hour or so of Amnesia: Dark Descent, and that one definitely takes the cake.

Bioshock. The first hour, when you're creeping around with nothing but a wrench, a revolver with scarcely any rounds, and a fist full of electricity.
agreed
bioshock is quite the creepy game
That is until you get Scrounger and get almost unlimited ammo.

It's such a damn shame that I can't get Thief to run on my computer. Sounds like such an amazing game...

When i first met Barnacle...
For guy who had never played HL 2 and was playing from friends save (which was quite in the end) suddenly passing corner and then being dragged up.. and then i looked up and freaked so badly out that my friend fell of his chair from laughter.

These days i might play HL2 just to go killing spree towards those tongued bastards.

I'm going to find Amnesia: The Dark Decent now so I can play it. :p

OT: Vault 34 of Fallout: New Vegas... Just... Fuck that Vault. Scared the crap out of me... All I had was the Anti-Materiel Rifle and the 10mm SMG... By the time I got to the end, I only had ten rounds left for the AM Rifle and empty for the 10mm... GOD DAMN.

System Shock 2, when SHODAN reveals herself as well as when you find out how the midwives are, erm, made. Then there's 'The Many' and it's lines as well as...

Ah hell, all of System Shock 2. That game is one of very, very few which legitimately gets to me.

Good one. Thief series, despite not being a strictly horror series, has always been known for at least one or two amazing horror levels per game.

The Thief series has a few shining examples of horror.
It's a stealth game but when you work in the shadows you're bound to come across things you shouldn't see. They also give in hints at various point to the event I'm talking about, random rumors and a 'local fairytale'.
The most shining example (and recent) is Thief 3, the stage in 'the cradle'.

Any time I was playing the original Fatal Frame and it would become completely silent (usually just after entering or exiting an area) I remember feeling all the tension in the room from the silence, and right at a moment like that, a gust of wind would usually catch my bedroom door behind me and slam it shut. Christ, I almost crapped myself when that would happen, lol.

The second Fatal Frame convinced me I am a complete and total pansy ass. The area where you have to run through the rooms, hiding in the closets, trying to get away from the crazy woman with the white kimono with absolutely dick to defend yourself with was hell. It's a mad dash, complete with horrible controls and a preset camera, and fuck me it was hard to keep composure and make it through.

As many pointed out the thief series are great, being one that uses shadow and still being afraid of it at the same time is awesome..you want to light some places on fire so you jsut can see everything, that stage with the horn in thief uhh two comes in mind, where you are in this huge catacomb and Zombies are everywhere and yo hear this soothing humming of the horn at the same time.
Of course I just hate the cradel, the first time I'm playing trough a Game I'm actually less scared than when I play it a second time, because I know what awaits me..and this is somehow more scary.

System Shock 2 and Bioshock got their awesome moments too, just when you run low on ammo or when suddenly something jumps in your freaking face. In system shock 2 I wasted my entire first clip of my weapon as I saw my first "ghost" goddamn that was just evil.

Of course knowing "who" you are in bioshock is also something...well unnerving.

As much as I dislike what Bioshock became, it holds one of the scariest moments in gaming for me

The scene when you have the shotgun and find the dead body, and when you walk next to it, the lights around you go out, leaving you in the lone light left on. Then all of a sudden, you hear a scream of a splicer, then another, then another until they're all around you. They come at you from the darkness and I fired and fired, freaking out until the lights came back on and I was like...whoa.

Problem for me was the game was like this. It was scary and unnerving, then the lights got turned on and I saw it was less scary. What if, to extend the horror, instead of showing me 15-20 bodies, show me nothing. Don't even turn the lights back on, make them flicker on and off, showing no bodies, except every so often, and then drop them out again.

Ravenholm in Half-Life 2. In particular when you first encounter the fast zombies. Ugh, their screams stayed with me for a while after.

I love ghosts and being creeped out but I'm not really afraid of the dark and I tend to make a joke out of everything as a defense mechanism rofl. While playing Amnesia I was like 'You know Mr ghost stamping around with wellies on isn't very subtle' or 'Okay, OKAY I won't play your piano jeez TOUCHY.'

It's a pretty common reaction probably xD
This is my defense mechanism whenever I am Truly scared.
When I was younger, Doom 3, I couldn't shutup, because If I stopped talking all the scary noises would get to me.
"Ahh shit.. its a dark Hallway.. I KNOW YOU'RE BEHIND THAT DOOR YOU KNOW!! yeah gunna run through here and I'm going to OWN all of you!! I'm Going to-
AHHH SHIT OHHH FOR FUDGE SAKE...
...Yeahh.. I got you....*pauses game and takes a break*"
And I did this for amnesia too...
"....eh... heh heh heh.... heh......haaa......... Fuck."
