There is also one in F.E.A.R. Basic, where you go down a ladder, turn around, and Fettel is right fucking there.
NOOOOOOO it was Alma there on the top of the ladder, then when you get off the ladder, BAM, Fettel is walking towards you. I unleashed a whole clip at the bastard, who disappeared into nothingness. One of the most memorable moments in the game.
This! Damn that scared the shit out of me

Pay close attention in Metro 2033. They put a lot of effort into detailing those guns. At one point I was playing on the hardest difficulty(the one that disables the HUD). I kept looking at the back of the revolver thinking that the rounds looked like they'd been fired. So of course at the part where you and Bourbon first reach that station and there's a rush of nosalises, I aim and wait until it's almost on top of me. Go to shoot and *click*. For some reason I kept thinking I should reload before that but thought i'd be wasting ammo. That and sneaking across the border for the war without killing anybody.

Hiding form a blowout in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. , ducking into a cave, and hearing a hidden controller enemy whiseper "Depart stalker...... leave stalker....".
When I got caught in that cave, I was onto my last couple of 12 gauge shots and at the enterence were a couple of bloodsuckers. Plus the blow out.

Geist on the GameCube has some pretty atmospheric moments...

In one chapter, you have to sneak into the women's showers to possess one of the doctors to save your friend, and (due to a mechanic where things that really scare the host prevent you from nearing them) you are kind of guided to the area where you get your clothes by not being able to near guards. You get your clothes, and walk back into the hallway, only to see... there are no guards anymore. All that indicates their fate... bloody trails on the walls and floor.

Playing that with a friend at 3AM in total darkness... Ugh. The lights went out entirely at one point ingame. Screwed with our heads. D:

The opening level of half life 2 after you get off the train. The mood of that part was excellent and really did a good job of foreshadowing the slightly unnerving events that come later.

The first time I played through the Ocean house hotel part of Vampire the masquerade bloodlines.

Also pretty much every moment I played System shock 2.

I have more examples. But at the moment I feel kinda lazy =P

Anytime you see a zerg base in Starcraft or SC2 it's pretty creepy.

Condemned: Criminal Origins. Hear me out -
When you find the torturer's body, multilated and in a locker after your instincts showed you he went in there to die. Rosa asks you to photograph the body. After you do it, she requests a close up of the Torturer's face. When you zoom the camera into his face, right when you get to the point that all you can see is the face, his head snaps around and he grabs you.
Scared half to death ^

Also, BioShock 1 - first time I played it, I went to pick up the shotgun just off the foyer for Medical, and the lights dropped out, leaving just a circle of light around me. In the darkness you could see splicers dragging their wrenches and creating sparks, great moment.
[small][small][small][small]Then again, you were just given a shotgun, so it was a little too easy to corner-camp.[/small][/small][/small][/small]

The creepers from this indie game called minecraft are terrifiying. Maybe you've heard of it? It's not very well known...

Not well known? It has over 4,000,000 registered users and over 1,000,000 people have purchased it and it's not even out of BETA yet.
HAhaha, sorry, that's my fault. I'm English, everything I say is sarcastic. It's actually written in white bellow my post, just highlight it.

I was talking to friend after I got home from buying Dead Space 2 (she was with me when I bought it) and we were talking to the guys at the gamestop. They said the game wasn't for a faint of heart (which we already guessed that) and told us that even the littlest things will scare us to shit.

So we put the game in and I let it download and we were talking, leaving the game at the menu screen for a couple minutes when we hear something. "Isaac..."

We had no idea what it was and the lights were off. I thought it was my mom and so did my friend, but none of our names is Isaac. It happened again and we were extremely creeped out we had to keep the lights on the entire time.

EDIT
There was one particularly unsettling bit in Dead Space 2 that bugged me.
When you go back to the Ishimura, there's a decontamination chamber you must go through. I remember in the first game when you go through there, it locks you in a tiny room and a bunch of necromorphs jump out at you, so that's what I was expecting. Instead, you stand in the small room for about 30 seconds, holding your breath and waiting for them to come, but they never do... The room just decons and lets you pass. That was a good part for me.
Yeah, it was the same for me.

Then the second time you go through, I saw a Pack banging on the glass where I just came from. I was like 'Why would one be there? I'm not going back that way.' So I turned around and saw an Enhanced Slasher in the direction I would be heading. 'Oh. They were trying to distract me. That's...stupid.' *Loud crash from behind* 'What was th-OHGODMYFACEITSEATINGMYFAAAAAACE'
The whole Ishimura gave me the creeps. I was like, "I'm gonna get swamped." First few rooms no enemies...Hmmm. After the chamber still no enemies...'OH! I get it. They're gonna swamp me in some long dark tunnel and then swamp me the whole way off the ship. *Enter the dark tunnel with the Necromorphs that charge you* Okay...Dark and a tunnel. Theres gonna be enemies. *Pick up a crate, throw it down the tunnel* 'GRAGHR'....'Shit, there it is'. >_>
oh my god I totally agree. I was holding my breath waiting for something to come out at me and it was like 'decontamination complete' and I'm like 'fwee!'

Then when I came back I hadn't gotten any other ammo then 'OMGTHEREEVERYWHERD:'

I have [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/9.226212.7718808] already discussed [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.257801-Majoras-mask-one-of-the-best-and-creepiest-games-of-the-decade#9693835] this subject [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.247343-Majoras-Mask?page=3#9087568] extensively before. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.240120-Creepiest-Scariest-Video-Game-Character-Ever#8655918]

Mods, I realize that this may count as a short post or self advertising, but please understand that I have discussed this topic so many times with such long and thought out posts that I feel at this point it'd be better for me to link to my orginal posts on the matter instead of typing another whole half a page thesis on Majora's mask.

No. I can't say I've ever heard of that game.

Must only be the coolest of the cool cats who know about that very awesome yet inexplicably unappreciated game.
Yeah, so many gems go unappreciated.

Similarly, I dunno if you're familiar with that sarcy British guy that calls himself Yahtzee...he's made some damn scary games.

SWAT 4 could be freaky, cause it was believable, suspension of disbelief was easier when you are "only" fighting human enemies, and their weapons can splatter your whole team if you are careless.

Blade Kitten, to an minor extent, on the level after the Acland...but the end of game cut scene gave a reason for all that, rather than just character development, which was a shame.

Oh you English people. That makes a lot more sense now.
