I'm trying to come up with some horror movies to get my hands on before a big "movie night" thing me and some mates have got planned in a couple of weeks.

Obviously horror movies are the prime choice when you're alone in a room in a darkened house with nobody else around, so we're going for an all-night "scare the shit right out of ourselves" festival of traumatising horror experiences.

But we all agree that most horror films are pretty crap. So we're trying to find horror films that are more "slow-release creepiness" than "jump scares or relentless slasher monsters". Trouble is beyond stuff like Poltergeist, The Omen and The Exorcist, we're having a hard time really thinking of any.

So I turn to the internet, master of all irrelevant knowledge, or assistance in recommending some creepy-as-all-shit movies for us to mentally destroy ourselves with.

'Shutter' a Thai film from the 00's
'REC' The Spanish film that 'Quarantine' (poorly) ripped off
'Koroi' a Japanese POV (Blair Witch style) film that's pretty long but with some damn scary scenes through out
'Two Sisters' Korean film about a two sisters (duh) and their confrontations with a new step mother that devolves into a total mind fuck that takes many many viewings to wrap your head around
'Lake Mungo' A story about a family being haunted by the spirit of a drowned daughter that isn't too spooky until the end that really sent shivers down my spine

All I can think of at the moment, I'll edit more in later if I think of any.

The Ring is a scary one, but I might be remembering that wrong since I watched it when I was really young (7-8 years old).

Oh how did I forget that. I love (hate?) that film so much. And the rest of them haven't seen it... this could be interesting.

is a great place to go look for horror movies, read descriptions and reviews.

For something out there, I recommend Marebito.

Its not a jump/bloody movie, its just generally creepy.

Some good tense ones are Halloween and Alien. For something more unnerving, try looking into the 1986 version of The Fly or some David Lynch films (not necessarily horror, but they can get under your skin), like Eraserhead.

Jacob's Ladder. It's creepy when you think about it. It lacks jumpscares, but is amazing on a psychological level.
Also, it's my favourite movie of all time.

YES, that is an excellent movie(I'm assuming you're talking about the Carpenter one). The creatures are horrifying, and it has a constant atmosphere of dread. It also has the best jump-scare I've ever seen. Another great one is Silent Hill. It's one of the few good video game movie adaptations.

If you want a really unnerving movie, watch Black Swan. It's never outright scary, but it will make you very uncomfortable. It's just really creepy. It also has a lot of weird sexual parts that are very WTF-worthy.

Eden Lake - Not scary per say just from my pov it was very uneasy to watch

Saw Series I suppose if you watch from the first film up the last

Arachnaphobia - If you hate spiders that is

Brain Dead - Just for the lulz and gore fest (included a link below of my fav kung fu priest)

Paranormal Activity - If your prone to jumping at scary/tense films

An American Werewolf in London - Pure classic

Childs Play 1-3 - Eh gotta love Chucky for his lines sometimes

Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Not the remake, the original is much better

Puppet Master - Won't wanna stay alone with puppets ever again....or ever will if you haven't been around them.

Leprechaun - Lol for a young Jennifer Aniston.

Pet Sematary - Another classic Stephen King novel turned film

Salem's Lot - As above but with vampires

Children of the Corn - Speaks for itself.

Seriously I could go on and on I LOVE horror/sci fi movies ^_^

This. This a thousand times. It was incredibly shocking. I didn't think something like this could have freaked me out in a day and age where horror is Blood-letting and gore, this movie is almost virtually bloodless, and it's beyond disturbing.

I agree with you, if you want a psychological horror film on par with what Silent Hill (The movie) should have been, I'd recommend this too.

OT:On Par with Creepy, I'd say you can't go wrong with Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Yes, it has blood, and it is violent (sometimes in a silly sort of way), but it has two scenes, (Three, if you cound the ending) that will leave you cold, like a creepy horror film should do.

I was terrified by epic movie. When I thought "Why would people let this film get past the editing stage".
I'm kinda into the british horror/ comedy-horror at the moment.
Like The Cottage and Tormented- both of which feature
shovel decapitation.

EDIT: Argh, accidentially pressed "Post"

Anyways, that basically sums it up. Jacob's Ladder is a must see.

Other than that:

Alien - Still one of the scariest movies of all time.

The Thing (80ies Remake) - See above, and very very tense too.

30 Days of Night - I might be alone here, but i found that one VERY Creepy.

[REC] - It's highly predictable, but that, the intimacy of the perspective and the fake-authenticity of it (especially since many scares were improvised) make it just a more creepy film to me.

marebito - Here's one that isn't really scary, but very, very creepy.

The Descent - Creepy just by being very unpredictable in it's jump scares.

The Fly - The end-all in creepyness too me. Once you know what's inevitably going to happen, it gets enormously unnerving

The Ring (US) - Another rare remake that is far better than the original imo, especially thanks to how artistically creepy the imagery is.
