I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but Rosemary's baby is a good old school horror film in my book.

Try Alien if you don't know the big twist. I heard The Thing is good and from what I've seen I agree.

'Them' would be a good choice for unnerving people so would probably be a good starter.
D'awwww. I thought you meant the old sci-fi film.

I used to have a document somewhere where I had categorized every horror movie I had ever seen based on type of scares and how good they were, but alas, that was a long time ago.

The Thing. One of my favorite creature/horror movies.
The Thing is still one of the few films I would say deserves to call itself a 'horror' flick.

Aside from that I'd recommend Alien. Sure, it verges on the sci-fi/horror border but it is (again) better than most modern films that try to do the same (see Pandorum).

Another decent film is Needful Things, which conveniently is currently up on the BBC iPlayer. It's an adaptation of a Stephen King book, so there is a decent story and it isn't about sudden shocks to try and make you jump. Although the 'twist' is a bit obvious after only a short while.

I was ninja'd with Jacob's Ladder, but I'll add another tally to that suggestion. The Untold Story might not exactly be horror, either, since it's more like a true crime story with graphic scene, but it's one of my favorite movies. After that, Audition because of its extremely thick atmosphere, and then The Brood. Yes, I believe in that order.

EDIT: Also, because I can't never stop talking about movies:

Evil Dead Trap
Uzumaki
Demons
The House by the Cemetery
Xtro
Suspiria
The Tenant
Angel Heart (not exactly a horror movie but it's creepy)

If you want memorable in a more "Oh my god I don't know how much longer I can watch this" kind of way, Ichi the Killer and Men Behind the Sun are a couple of good bets.

Oh yea, and The Shining, have you really not seen this one?

I found Eraserhead pretty disturbing. Now, it's more of a surreal arthouse-film than a straight out horror movie but... really, it creeped me out more than any other movie so maybe you should try it. It's a good movie.

Puppet master, Puppet master 2, or The thing. Thats some of my teenage horror therapy there. I love The thing, as freaky as is, but those puppets... god do i seriously hate puppets now...

Yeah, I saw Phelous's review of it a little while ago. Weird to see him going "fuck this bullshit" for real, instead of for hyperbole.

I'd recommend "The Thing", though it wasn't really a remake of "The Thing from Another World", they were just both based on the same story. Both are good, but the later is sci-fi with some horror, the former is horror with some sci-fi.

The Silent Hill movie...I didn't think it was bad, but it didn't seem to be even trying to be a horror movie. When the monsters pop up, they don't seem to be saying "Boo! I'm a monster, please be scared of me", instead it's more "Hello, I'm a monster, please wonder why I am here".

Them...I wouldn't call that a horror movie. It sorta starts off like one, and it's quite a while before it changes into sci-fi, but once it does, it stays pretty firmly as sci-fi.

[rec] is indeed predictable- basically 28 Days Later in an apartment block- but damn if it didn't get my adrenaline flowing. Watch the subtitled version, the overdub wastes the atmosphere. It's the claustrophobic sense of "being there" that makes it work.

Reanimator isn't so much scary as disgusting campy fun. Still stands up 20 years later.
