Also 'The Graduate'(too American?) though Ebert did retract his review later. Also why did Zooey break up with the boyfriend after watching this in 500 days of Summer?
She didn't break up with him after watching The Graduate, but it made her depressed because she realized that the kind of crazy love that defied logic that was on display in The Graduate wasn't what they had at all. Or maybe because she realized that's how he saw things (since in the beginning it said he misread The Graduate), and she knew it wasn't going to turn out like that. Least, that's what I interpreted it as.

EDIT: Oh, sh*t, I was ninja'd on the "Dances With Wolves" reference. Maybe I should just learn to keep my posts shorter? :)

AVATAR
oh DEAR GOD, Avatar. A thousand times over, Avatar.
Critically acclaimed (to some degree), rabid fanbase, and yet, I disliked it. But BECAUSE of the overhype and stubborn jackasses who state it's the resurrection of God, my dislike turned to absolute hatred.
You know, I went into the theater determined to hate Avatar, because I knew it was just going to be Dances With Wolves in space. And surely enough it was, but that world was so beautiful that I just couldn't help but like it. Which doesn't mean I get all the hype over the movie (well, I do understand, but I don't buy it). But at least I don't hate it, and that is a lot coming from me...

The two things people rave about that I can't get to like are multiplayer games and a certain Brazilian artist named Renato Russo, who was considered some kind of god around these parts even before he died in 1997 or 98, I don't remember (maybe it was 1996...). You wouldn't believe the degree of fanaticism his fans show. Back in the day, whenever I said I didn't like Legião Urbana (the name of his band), people looked at me like I was some sort of weirdo.

In fact, everytime someone tells me I *should* like something, like it's my sacred duty, my dislike of it always turns to hate.

I'm still a fanatic Beatlemaniac, though. But I don't think anyone who doesn't share my passion is weird, just that they have bad taste...

Yes, I'm just kidding.

I think Animal Collective and Panda Bear are freaking terrible, and I don't understand why they receive so much critical praise - it's all just shitty noise
I can see where you're coming from to a degree, I honestly hated their latest LP, mainly because I hate synthesizers and they pretty much dedicated that entire album to using synths. Strawberry Jam that came before was amazing in my opinion. I loved how they gradually layer instruments to create a joyous wall of sound. It's just fun, lighthearted music I guess.

I could just be talking out my ass though.
Well, the only thing I've heard by Animal Collective is "Merriwether..... whatever it was called", so perhaps I'll give Strawberry Jam a chance. I'm with you, though - I can't stand synthesizers, which is probably why I disliked the album so strongly.

These recent months and thanks to the incident in Australia which only proves how stupid fangirls are.

Oh, yes, I also have to say I do not get Twilight. I think most of it is because of the bastardization of Vampires as a whole in the series. I mean... vampires in daylight? Madness.

Critical acclaim is very different to popularity ;)

I can't understand why people make such a fuzz about Jane Austen novels. And let me make one thing clear: I like Jane Austen novels, I just don't think they're the best thing since sliced cheese.
I agree so much that I'm not entirely sure you aren't actually just me with a cool avatar.

Why Avatar, of course. I hated that movie. I entered the theatre expecting to hate it, then I started liking it, then I started despising it.
Hurt Locker is also not that good but at least it is entertaining, if a little incompetent.

Halo, Call of Duty, and Avatar.
I like and enjoy playing Call of Duty with my friends, but I don't enjoy the online play.

Anything that gets a lot of hype puts me off, simply because 99 times out of 100, it will disappoint.

Oh, Comedy movies in general in the past 5 years. The Hangover, Knocked Up, and that whole crew. I don't find any of them funny in any way.
None of them are critically acclaimed anyway. Most reviews probably said 'Entertaining mindless fun'

I don't get why people love Halo. I also don't understand the love for Left4Dead... And plenty of other games now that I think about it.

Outside of gaming I generally like popular things, but I don't get the appeal of Star Wars or Lord of the Rings... I can see why people like them, but why they're so incredibly popular I just don't see. Personally I find them boring but that's just me.
It's good if you understand at the least, for e.g. I understand RTS's and FPS's I just don't play them.

Twilight, Harry Potter, stupidity...
Other people thinking some FPS are stupid... Especially Gears of War...

I just don't get it. At all.
Twilight and Harry Potter are good aimed at the demographics (teen girls and young people). But if you happen to be in those demographics and hate them, then it's worth mentioning.

I live in Australia, I must know what happened to apologize on behalf of my country if we did something retarded.

I can't really think of much that's not bashing on popularity more than it is not understanding it (eg. Twilight or Avatar) but I'll have to say... Inglorious Basterds. I'm sorry everyone! But after just having watched Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, it felt really boring to me! Maybe I'll watch it again some other time...
I'm with you on this one, compared to Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds is a little lacklustre...

A million times this. To me it was basically Dances with Night Elves.

Well apparently you wouldn't know clever writing if it walked up and slapped you in the face. I was going to say "In before geniuely good games get mentioned" then I saw this.

Oh and of course, all things Tarantino except Reservoir Dogs. Seeing Kill Bill get rave reviews made my head explode, that movie is at best wildly schizophrenic.

Pink Floyd. Everyone loves them but I find their music inpenetrable. A few songs, notably Wish You Were Here and High Hopes, are excellent. Also, I can fully appreciate that Dave Gilmour is a fantastic guitarist. However, I just don't find anything special in most of the other stuff I've heard, especially when compared to other popular bands of the time.

Just off the top of my head, and not all are new.

Games - Halo, Half-Life, Ultima Series, God of War, The Sims, Grand Theft Auto
Movies - Scarface, Godfather, Anything by Quentin Tarantino, Star Wars
TV Shows - Reality TV (Any of it), Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek
Books - Twilight, Harry Potter
Music - Rap, R&B (new shit on both counts, I like some of the older stuff)
