I didn't realize the God Hand was panned, So I'll use that as one of my choices. It's funny as hell and an enjoyable beat em up.

Tales of Legendia, the most despised game Tales of game when released,I think Innocence gets that title now a days but I live on the fringe of the Tales fandom for good reasons. Sure it includes your standard 2 mages and sword wielder but it switches it up by having a fist fighter for our main instead of a swordsman. Jay had some cool trap/clock and dagger fighting which wouldn't be seen again till Raven in Vesperia. Moses and Grune were pretty cool too. Yeah it's art style was rather cutesy but it had a charm to it that I liked. Most people get on it for it's 2D battle system, but to me Symphonia was never really 3D so at least Legendia didn't try to hide it and it was fun. Would I call it a great game,no but it really doesn't deserve the ire it gets.

I reckon the Dynasty Warriors series qualifies.
What annoys me the most is they always get like 60% or less for being the same as previous games in the series and COD get's 90%+ for the exact same reason.
^ This. The Warriors franchise is about having fun watching the bad acting and mowing down thousands of dudes with silly weapons and insane fighting styles for me, and I neither expect nor demand anything more from it.

Also Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup wasn't too well reviewed when it cam out and even though it's mind numbingly simple even on the hardest setting, I still love it.

AVP.

I love this game to death, and while I won't deny that it'll piss you off, it'll make you feel like a badass sometimes, make your pulse actually increase at others, make you feel like a part of a team, make you feel like a ninja, make you feel like a hunter.

Basically, a good match of the newest AVP is as good an online experience as can be had.
I never got that either. I had a lot of issues finding matches, but yeah, I completely agree on the second part, especially when you are kicking arse as a marine, either in a team or solo, because everybody always targets the marines. Lucky for me, I own as the marine. I suck at both the Xenos and Yautja though, could never get the hang of the jumping about.
I don't mean to boast, but I'd call myself seasoned as an AVP player. I've gotten the win alone by racking up 50 kills against teams of four and four with every species many times. There's nothing more gratifying, but especially as Marine. Everyone thinks the marine can't do that much, but he's the most powerful class in 180 degrees. If he can see you, he has a better chance at killing you than you do of him if he knows what he's doing.

I'm going to throw my two cents in towards some games. IN MY OWN THREAD, OH MY. OP IS ****** INDEED.

So yeah, Bodycount has awesome gunplay and must be stood up for, for that alone.

Duke Nukem Forever I really REALLY loved for some reason. It wasn't utterly fantastic but it was hilarious and if you process everything as tongue-in-cheek it can be a lot of fun. Also, the single-player DLC actually went so far as to improve the game - from its shooting to its writing - so much that it pushed it into the "good" end of things. YOU KILL ALIENS. ON THE MOON. WITH A GIANT ALIEN WILLY. Oh, Duke.

And Brutal Legend. Wait, it has an 82 score on Metacritic. Well that's not so bad. But a lot of people were disappointed by it anyway. To them I say, you're utter morons, the game is amazingly fresh, please go back to your classical piano literature and leave the metals to those of us with actual balls.

Had to think about it for a minute...

... I wouldn't defend it to death per se ... but argue that it wasn't bad as people make it out to be. I'd probably go with Dragon Age 2 and Duke Nukem Forever.

I like them as games ... some of their flaws cannot be overlooked, but they are also fun.

What games have to be. :)

Also the first Two Worlds
I really want to agree with you on this one, but there's one thing that absolutely kills the game for me: the framerate issues. As much as I want to like Two Worlds, the framerate makes it damn near unplayable. It's too bad, 'cause otherwise it's a pretty solid RPG. Tons of gear, a huge open world with nicely varied scenery and a pretty stunning draw distance, deep character customization and, of course, it's hammy charm... but it doesn't amount to much when it plays like a choppy power-point presentation.

Anyway, the game that immediately comes to mind for me is One, for the original Playstation. I honestly don't understand why this game scores as lowly as it does. The controls are fine, the action is hectic and there's lots of stuff to blow up. Yeah, it's pretty damn hard, but since when is that a bad thing?

Mirror's Edge. Damn that game is fun. Dunno why people think you can't platform in first person, do you need to stare down at your feet if you wanna jump somewhere irl?
In real life, you have spatial awareness. You can feel your feet; you know where they are. With games, all you have is sight and sound. Everything else is stripped.

I absolutely loved Mirror's Edge, and personally didn't have any trouble with the 1st person platforming so much as just reacting quickly enough, but I can see where people are coming from. Maybe if they took advantage of controller vibrations? Say, as you approach the edge of a platform, the vibrations build and reach a "critical point" just before you reach the end? Obviously, that needs some refining, as you don't want to turn the gameplay into just jumping when the controller shakes, but it's a way to breach the spatial awareness barrier.
I suppose I was just unconsciously applying that to the game. I can't remember needing to practise a few times to learn my limits.

If I fail a jump I never think it's the game's fault and I can usually tell when games just say "nope! not gonna give it to ya!"

I remember that a few jumps and wallruns in one of Prince of Persia games broke their own physics. The one jump in the third one is far beyond what you can normally jump for example.

Yeah I can see where people are coming from but to quote the League of Legends playerbase i'm "2pr04u" XD

Two Worlds.

It was unique so it stood out from the copy paste tolkien fantasy games. The enviroment for example, it had anything from icy mountains with wolves to bamboo forests with huge insect monsters. Even a cool desert with egyptian features and ravaged lava land where the rocks turned out to be golems and they ambushed you.

The sad thing about the online is, is that it could of been the greatest online ever made, if it wasn't for the unplayable lag, and balance issues.

I still really like the game though, especially the predator campaign. Jumping around killing dudes is the best thing ever!

Yes the gameplay got repetative, but I loved the gameplay. Switching it up with every different character's ablities, going from a slowmo sniper shot to controling an enemy to making a flame dragon come out of my hand. It was fun.
Good choice, sir! I'm not only a Clive Barker fan (fuck you, homophobes), but I love the ambience in this game. Now if only someone would make a Weaveworld game...

Don't see why people are mentioning Mirror's Edge. The game was generally well received even if some criticisms were made. Other people are mentioning games that were even universally praised by critics. Perhaps people are confusing "critically panned" with "community backlash".

OT: I don't think there's a single critically panned game I would defend "to the death", but there are some that I have enjoyed. N3 for example. Of the games in that genre which I've played I found N3 to be the most enjoyable. I spent a lot of time having fun with that game. But I got stuck at some point and just gave up on it. I really like TDU2 despite it's flaws. A lot of the problems with the servers that critics panned the game for are fixed now too. The characters and voice acting are still abysmal though, but they can be ignored mostly. I also have this space flight sim called Project Sylpheed. The story is awful and the difficulty is retarded but I found the basic gameplay to be pretty fun. But a long time ago I hit a difficulty spike which is just impossible to get past and the game won't let you go back and play previous levels, so I gave up on that game too.

Why would I "defend" a video game? I really couldn't care less if people dislike something I enjoy, regardless of whether they do it rightfully or not. Now, if I were a developer and this was a game I created that'd be a somewhat different situation. But I'm not.

In any case, I couldn't name a game even if I wanted to since I have no idea which of my games are "critically panned", if any at all, as I don't read reviews.

Armored Core V. In fact, all Armored Core games. Virtually the best score any AC game gets is a 7, mainly due to complexity of customisation and the somewhat lacking story (which is there, and interesting if you figure it out for yourself, but not much immersiveness), and the controls (which you can map, so cry me a river). But more recently with Armored Core V, I've seen some reviews that aren't just harsh, they're unprofessionally insulting and virtually dismiss any virtue the game may have.

Reasons I like it: Team system, live territory system, customisation (as always, incredibly broad although not so much as previous AC games and with simplified mechanics) and setting somewhat. But you are piloting a giant robot that you made yourself. And destroying things with it. I fail to see where that falls flat. I wouldn't care if the story was "One day, you suddenly were". It is fun as hell.

Unfortunately, and this doesn't factor in to most reviews so it isn't applicable there, but objectively makes the game unrecommended even from me, the server split means there are hardly ANY players in the entirety of the EU region ('Stralya included), and Namco Bandai being f***ing incompetent means that the broken weapons are still broken months after FROM fixed them in Japan.

Deadly Premonition. What I like about it, everyone else hates.

I like the dynamic world, the sidequests, the wacky, messed-up plot, and the psychology used in the symbolisim and characters. Then again, I also hated Super Mario Bros. Wii and just thought Oblivion was "average", but can stand the onslaught of poorly-designed Xbox live indie games and actually enjoy some of them.

Also, Wind Waker. I liked the cel-shaded graphics, and thought it was much better than Link's Awakening or Ocarina of Time. Another Zelda game is Majora's Mask. It's often considered a black-sheep, and is really criticised when compared to OoT. I really liked it, and it's one of my favourite games of all time because of the fact that, it was essentially a horror game in its own way. It was really damn creepy and unnerving at times, and.. oh god, turning into a Zora... I actually screamed first time I saw that when I first played at age 11.

Alpha Protocol.

Sure it was buggier than a Rachni nest for many people and had a lot of design issues but I feel it was unfairly ripped into by many many critics who did not see the love and detail that went into it.

This game tallied up every decision, action, conversation choice, personality quirk and result into cohesive narrative. I never played a game that so thoroughly integrated choice and consequence. I also like the stat based shooting even if many others did not.

capcha: "do more sit-ups" no thanks

Although the combat wasn't stellar this game is a masterpiece in my eyes:

I'm not lying to you when I say this:

There are interesting characters
The Writing is on level with Mass Effect
The Darkness level, for a pokemon game, is perfect
Pokemon actually die
I wouldn't rate the writing that high, it's really cheesy and a bit dumb at times. The plot was good though, and the gameplay was as well, especially the bosses.
