I'd recommend the 1st Crysis here mate. It's a lot more linear than a lot of responses in this thread suggest but it deals with that well, don't let that put you off. Also the the vehicle sections are extremely optional, not the turn off they sound like. Personally I found the game most enjoyable on the hardest difficulty, combats flows so much better that way.
The game is exceptional and definitely a must for any avid gamer's library. Go ahead and make a purchase man!

How does crysis 1 play on the xbox anyway? Does it lose it's map scale? I know the suit functionalities are cloned from crysis 2 and that's about all I know.
I played Crysis on the PC yonks ago (although it's one of the rare games I never finished) and found no real differences in the maps for the console. Possibly they're not as destructible, but I really couldn't say.

Mostly they just tone the graphics down. Not sure how to embed this video.

I would like to take this opportunity to whine about what they did wrong in Crysis 2, most importantly, they ditched the entire concept of the cryophilic flying aliens that actually seemed rather threatening
Instead you get to shoot at some red dunce squids waddling about in power armour

I loved driving cars right into an enemy camp in the first game, punching houses apart and killing soldiers with other soldiers

Crysis 1 is great, Crysis 2 and 3 are horrible CoD shooters in my opinion. Halfway though either game it matters not, though. As the aliens show up and wreck everything good about it.

Overall I'd go with Crysis 2. It's more polished and consistent, like other people said. The first one had some good moments and I liked the style of open-world shooter they went for, but it was more uneven and the last third of the game is pretty much worthless.

I think the real question is how much you like open-world games.

Better paced, better controls and doesn't make you commute across big empty maps all the time. Also, the story, while not exactly better than the first game, at least takes a back seat.
The first game's story is way, way less prevalent than the second's. Not to mention far less stupid.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of a North Korean general declaring, "... and then I shall rule the Earth!"

I'll take, "Nano nano nano deep layers nano." over that tripe any day.

The first Crysis is infinitely better.

Crysis 2 is a medicore CoD clone with a rubbish story and a stealth mode which lets you sneak past everything. Boss fights suck and so do vehicle sections. It's very linear and guns feel plasticky and fake. Characters are boring and the game drags on far too long for me to actually care. The aliens are annoying and boring.

Crysis 1 is probably the best shooter that's ever been made. Directed sandbox, insane physics engine, stronger, aliens who are actually powerful and a great narrative structure. Also loads of diverse, unique missions and an amazing full out war sequence in the second third of the game makes this amazing.

Personally, I like Crysis more because of its much larger and more open environments, and due to the aliens not being humanoids like in Crysis 2. My favorite in the series is Crysis Warhead.

Pff, Crysis knows it's B-Movie. Crysis 2 thinks it's on to something actually worthwhile. I'll take a Korean general who's in it for all of five seconds over an old man and his Sub-Post-Ultra-Human-Warrior babble.
