Phantasy Star, if that counts. I just can't get into it no matter how hard I try I just can't stand the hands off battle system.

While were on the subject of cult classics I also hate Rocky Horror.
What the hell is a "hands off" battle system

I'm gonna get hurt over this, I just know it.

Firefly. Yes, I said it. Now I'm not saying it's really bad, but why in god's name does it have such a following?!? It's 14 episodes with NO connecting plot, sub-par writing, and admittedly good acting. Now I love the sci-fi genre, it's my favorite by a mile, but based on those 14 episodes I just can't understand what's so damned good about it. Nathan Fillion is awesome, as is the rest of the cast, but is that really all that makes people love this show?

Now, I think I'm going to go hide somewhere the flames can't reach me.
Good luck with that.

I lose faith in humanity every day it seems...
What, because people have different opinions to you?

I agree with that guy anyway, and not just because the "I hate humanity" card pisses me off more than anything, but because it's BORING AS FUCK.

People have different opinions, accept it, don't start hating humanity for it, because lord knows (not that I believe in a lord) that you aren't in any way a superior human being for enjoying a video game, and vise-versa.

/sigh

If your not part of the CULT part of the Cult Classic, you probably won't enjoy the game. Hence why its a CULT Classic; its not meant to be liked by everyone. The question seems rather redundant. Thats like going to a meeting, where everyone hates cake, and asking them their favorite type of cake.

However, Fallout and Fallout 2 could not keep my attention. They were ok, but definetly not my forte.

Which was really suprising, as I LOVE Fallout 3.

Does Heart of Darkness count?

I heard and saw a lot of good things about it, but trying to actually play it was torture (to me). Maybe by yesteryear's standards it's okay to have controls -that- unresponsive, but it's rougher around the edges than Earthworm Jim.

Oh, there's another. I tried to play EWJII, but couldn't get into it like I did when I was a kid. My memories are too strong to call it "sucky" though, even though I guess it kinda is.

Kinda like how I loved the Megaman and Legend of Zelda TV shows when I was a kid. Looking at them now I am convinced I was retarded. I just hope there wasn't lasting brain damage.

I'm going with Longest Journey. I've heard nothing but good about that game, but I found it so massively bad I couldn't play it for more than an hour.

And this from a guy who actually finished Doom 3...

Other than that, I would go with Final Fantasy Tactics. Had nothing to do with the graphics; I can put up with old graphics easily (I love many games with ancient graphics), but the story I found boring and the combat nearly unbearable. Not because it was turn based; I play a lot of turn-based strategic combat games, but Tactics was just bad.

I wouldn't say that's surprising really; Fallout 3 is only thematically linked to the earlier games. Characters, dialogue, story, exploration style, character stats, interface, and tone are all massively different in Fallout 3 than in 1 and 2; not liking the originals really doesn't say anything about liking 3 unless the part you hated was the setting, since that's about all that's the same.

I personally loved Fallout 2 mostly for its storytelling and character interaction, which were unique, and the non-linear exploration element (which Fallout 3 did carry over).

I have a friend that swears by the first two fallout games. He just can't stop talking about how amazing they are, and how other games (not just Fallout 3) should be like them.

I finally gave up and got Fallout 2 and gave it a spin. What you said sums up my experience. I guess I just needed to play it back when they were first released to love them like he does.

I also have to add...

I'm a lord, and so are many other people, such as the residents in the House of Lords.

OT: I'd have to agree with those talking about the first two Fallout games. Tried very hard to like them, but... meh.

Yeah.. the first two fallouts have NOT aged well. Only people who have warm fuzzy memories of either the games themselves when they first came out, or a special love for turn based combat and a rather wide open rpg setting will definitely not like it. Also those people who DO love that style, tend to not be fans of the "dumbed down" shooter-pretty-frills that is the 3rd game, hence all the hate for it.

Same thing with Baldur's Gate and Planescape.

I am SO going to get flamed for this post.
Deus Ex - it bores me to death. I kinda think it's awesome in concept, but still...
Planescape Torment - Getting out of the first place was boring enough, but trying to get out of the Hive...I'm sorry, I just don't feel it. Maybe it's something with it being a top-down rpg. Baldur's Gate is one of the few of those I've enjoyed.
Bioshock - It's not bad per se, but I think it'd be better as...either a (mini)series, movie or book.
Super Mario Bros. 3 - It's not BAD, just very very overrated.
Earthworm jim - Do I need to explain?
24 - if that counts, I suppose
Half-life 1& - again, not as much bad as overrated. I repeat, they are not bad games, simply overrated and hardly as innovative as people claim.
A good chunk of the mega-man series - repetitive platformers that never changes formula - ok, never is maybe exaggerating.
Pokemon - again, not sure if it's "cult" but it's definitely overrated.
The sonic games - Hold right, occasionally push the jump button, then win.
Honorable mention: If fallout 1 and 2 are anything like planescape torment, I'd rather play through Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project with my hands submerged in ice cold water while listening to J-pop.

Final Fantasy [insert any bloody number you want]

Whilst I've only played 7,8,10 and 10-2, I'm sure I'm missing someone good that everything loves and cosplays for.

The 'Rocky Horror Picture Show' would disagree with you.

there have been exceptions that have managed to gain fame among mainstream audiences.
Might want to read what you quoted next time and also do some research on The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
My quote proves my point so why would I need to re-read it or research it.

You said if it sells well it can't be a cult classic. You mentioned no exceptions.
My quote says there are exceptions.
I said Rocky Horror is a cult classic, which it is.

Pretty simple really.
