I always find that cult movies are kinda crap once you actually watch them, like the idea of them is great. but just watching them is boring. for me it's napolean dynamite that one with invading transvestite aliens and it's a musical...don't recall it's name.

however a cult film i loved was tencious d and the pick of destiny. just a hilarious movie.
so how bout you guys?
Define "cult film". Different people have different ideas of what that term really means. Tell me what that term means to you and I can probably give you a whole list of films.

Many people havent watched it.
You would be one of them.
I have watched it as well as many other cult films and big lebowski is... okay

No, seriously. Its cult. It has a cult following and all that jazz. Also, american culture? I was always under the impression it was a lot more popular in regions that tended to hate America, and the Coen brothers did include some under-the-belt-line jabs at their home country. But hell, who am I to judge.
I didn't deny it was a cult film, but from my knowledge Americans have a larger appreciation for it compared to ever where else.
I'd second that. I think The Big Lebowski was boring and generally awful. And yes, that is "just my opinion, man".

You can't have a cult film that everyone will consider to be good - otherwise it wouldn't be a cult film, would it?

That said, a lot of my favourite films are cult, like Fight Club, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Ginger Snaps or Labyrinth.

Ha, I laughed at how many people say something in the line of "I don't know if this is cult..." or "Last I heard, this was cult..."
Come on, the whole 'cult'-thing? It's just some hautaine term reviewers use, just like Sony inventing the term 'hardcore gamer'.
Anyway, here are some non-'Hollywood blockbuster' style movies that are definitely worth a watch:

- Park Chan-Wook's Vengeance Trilogy, consisting out of: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Old Boy and Lady Vengeance. Incredibly dark humor combined with some raw drama and torture sequences. Three movies that explore how one can go to get revenge.

- Anything by Studio Ghibli. Porco Rosso, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoké - all of them, awesome pieces of animation

- Dead Leaves. It's like dropping acid on a roller coaster ride, but without the brain damage.

- Delicatessen. A surrealist black comedy with a post-apocalyptic setting, need I say more?

Damn good thread, most of my all-time favourite films are mentioned here; Donnie Darko, Serenity, Clerks, et al. But didn't expect to see;

Does Requiem for a Dream count as a cult film?

Anyway, CUBE and Jacob's Ladder are my picks.
CUBE! WHAT A FILM... Those who havn't seen this little indie-canadian charm, and who think SAW is a good film, should check out Cube.

I suppose a lot of Terry Gilliam films are like this, but I have such a large place in my heart for this one.
TBH, I never expect anyone to say any Terry Gilliam films, he is totally my favourite director, I was suprised to see Brazil, not so much with 12 Monkeys, both awesome films... But the Adventures of Baron Munchausen is too perfect... Very surreal, and very funny. Good Job! haha!
