I like the Old Ones. Because they're not complete dickwads or cold, unfeeling monstrosities. Azathoth is pretty neat though, mainly because if he showed up he'd pulverize our entire solar system without even noticing. Actually, considering his size, everything in the solar system would get sucked into his gravity well and smash into him like meteors. So he'd cause the most epic destruction of the world ever: turn it into a flaming ball of rock which explodes against the largest lifeform in the universe.
You know what....I don't really like Lovecraft that much...I read his stuff....Rats in the Wall was good...Color of Space was good...loved Lurking Fear....The outsider had a twist I didn't expect, Dagon was a good 3 page story....Call of Cthulu was interesting but I always feel cheated because his character is not in the middle of the story he is meerly reading it as a book as we do and processing the information via narative.
LOVED Herbert West-REanimator....now that one was a good one...THAT SHOULD'VE been the lengths of his books!
I also liked the one about the blasted heath, the narative fit well with the story being told by a person who experienced the thing and having a person listen and having it fed via listener!
Pitman's Model was one of my favorites!
The Horror at Redhook was a bore for me...you know when your reading it and you kind of zone out while reading but your still reading...thats the entire book for me!
I havn't had time to read Dunwich horror, but I find H.P.'s stories to be interesting....but not the best...the storys are okay, hes terrible at description...I MEAN FUCKING REALLY!
When he said in that one story about the tomb the guy went in, and the main character was listening on a phone and he heard the creature voice....he called it "undescribable"........No! No! No! No!...the English languadge has over 1,000,000 words, PICK 1 TO DESCRIBE IT!
I'll say hes okay and his ideas are original and thats why people love him...and thats why I love him! But he sucks at the same time! NUFF SAID!

I always loved the idea/concept of Azathoth. That's why I was excited when I saw him in Arkham Horror.

The idea is that the creatures/Ancient Ones are so alien, so horrible, that they are beyond the reckoning of mankind, hence the use of "undescribable".Marv21 said:

Each story is a diferent character, which means different perceptions of the monsters. One guy could describe it one way, but this other person could possibly be so horrified, so overwhelmed, that they could not describe what they saw or heard.Marv21 said:

My point im trying to make is that its possible to describe anything with 1 or 2 adjectives and get the gist....even stupid people could throw 1 or 2 simple words its way and with all the freaking more high end words he uses in his stories it seems like the characters are fucking masters of the English Languadge.

Mostly because of R'lyeh though, the way it was described is just pure genius! I've yet to find anything, in any book, being able to make my brain all tingly as it tried to twist inside out just imagining something which can not exist in three dimensional space! The way Lovecraft described it... man, if Obama makes love to the English language then Lovecraft turned it into such a dirty little whore begging for more.

I've only read the Call of Cthulu and The Shadow over Innsmouth, but the latter is a masterpiece.
