The Excession.
Lawl, winner.

There's no real sci-fi society that can go toe-to-toe with the culture, simply because the culture have guns that are too big, and their warships have reaction times in the microseconds. Anything that operates on a human timescale loses by default, because they could literally never see the attack coming.

The only thing I could think of is the if every entity in the Warp (40K) banded together against them... of course, once you acknowledge the power of the God-Emperor, Chaos daemons, et cetera... 40K ceases to be sci-fi and goes right back to being fantasy.

I find this thread's lack of Chuck Norris, highly disturbing.
You both make good points, however, I think the ace up my sleeve could trump The Culture, The Doctor and Chuck Norris even if they all worked together...

I am talking, of course, about the one and only... CTHULU!

vs. intelligent Grey Goo.

That's worse than normal Grey Goo, because it not will it consume all matter on a planet as part of it's basic programming, but is willing to preserve stuff like spaceships in order to spread to other planets and consume them.

That, or Da Waaaaaaaaaaagh! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

Also, the Culture aren't actually a nation per-say, rather a culmination of intelligent beings that have forgone the concept of nations to achieve perfect anarchy through means of technology, right? I've only read one of Ian M. Bank's books (Matter), so this might not be the case...

Do the aliens in The Roswell Incident by Irvine Welsh count? It's in the book Reheated Cabbage.

That one isn't a Culture novel and it isn't much like Star Wars. I would say that Star Wars has more ancient religious stuff, like Jedi, you know. I can't think what movie would help you imagine that book, maybe Aliens would be better.

The best intro to the culture are the first three novels. Consider Phlebas, The Player of Games, Use of Weapons. They are a bit more like Star Wars, might meet you part way between the one you are reading anyway.

Yuki Nagato (not this one, the regular one).

She owns the Shrike, the Culture, Q, Wankatine, and just about everything else.

Deal with it.

But, the Culture has dealt with self-replicating hegemonising swarms before?
