This is pretty much it. Someone did this first and so the rest of the stupid people are sheep and just follow whatever the first moron does.

It's plain stupidity at work.
Weird, cos before i started self harming i'd never heard of anyone else doing it, and i didnt until about 2 years after....

I dunno about Marilyn Manson deliberately cutting himself on stage, I was a fan of him for a while. mostly for his ideals, and irritation with society. I see Cutting on a whole as attention seeking. They want someone to comfort them or change their world, or give them sex because they don't have the willpower or initiative to do it themselves. Medically speaking the damage to the body does release endorphines which is supposed to make you feel better, but I don't know how that works. Let me make this point clear too depression in kids is crap. Because in this day and age as soon as you say depression you think from a medical point of view, which means medication. And medication of that type shouldn't be used on anyone younger then 18 because it plays with their growth. If it's real depression, then peer groups instead of "professional counselling" Because it hopefully tells the kid that they're not alone. both in the sense they aren't the only attention seeker, and also its a reassuring and reliable way to tell that they have like minds. You'l believe someone understands you if they're going through the same or similar per say.

same reason people have started to dress like gangsters an retards, cos the people they look up to do it, band and celebrities do it, so they do it, its as simple as that and everyone does it, no point trying to deny it cos we all try and emulate our role models, bad thinkgs happen when people choose inappropriate role model!

Ever been really angry and punched a wall or something along those lines? It's kind of like that, except it's taking it out on themselves instead of the wall. That's my guess anyway.

Middle-class white teens don't know how to deal with the various changes and problems that inevitably come with growing up, that's why you get self-mutilation, school shootings and My Chemical Romance.
The last bit made me laugh quite a bit. There are so many bands like My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy etc aimed at the whiney young teenage demographic its untrue. These bands are some of the most manufactured things to come out of the music industry. Their whiney voices and depressive lyrics sometimes help convince these "middle class white kids" that there is something seriously up in their lives and so we have more cuttings.

I was reading a story a while back about how a 13 year old girl committed suicide and the parents were pinning the blame on the emo genre of music she listened to. They tried to sue My Chemical Romance's record label because of this which admittedly seems daft although I can sympathise with the parent's frustrations about how the music helps aid the "depression".

Whilst there's no evidence to support my seemingly ignorant ramblings I'm really sure there's a strong link between bands such as MCR and the young teenage depressives who self harm etc. I know a girl who has several deep cuts running up her arm and she can happily sit and listen to tortuous over emotional whiney music. Fortunately she's the only person I know in my school that does this, its not a big trend amongst the people I know in the North of England, I'm not sure about elsewhere.

After reading some valid points and personal experiences, I still find myself thinking that cutting is just something someone does because they're too stupid to find a better way to cope with whatever their problem is.

And when they do it for attention, well now that's just pathetic.

Gonna have to go with this.
Personally, whenever I hear someone talk about how "[their] friend is in the hospital for cutting..." I laugh.
Right in their face.

Why? Because, there are people with real problems out there who might deserve my sympathy (and won't get it.) Why should I give it to someone who hurts themselves?
I shouldn't.
Bing! Plus, if they hurt themselves, it kinda takes the fun away from hurting them myself.

"too stupid"? howsabout 'unable', ever been in a government run care home? my mum was 15 when i was born (yes, that makes her a stupid pregnant teenager) and i was almost immediately taken into care, dumped with foster families and moved all over the place. who do you turn to in a situation where there IS no-one to put your trust in? how do you approach yet another random person taking care of you, who is only going to be replaced next week/month?

if you have a parent or two and somewhere stable to live then you dont have the same concerns as a child who grows up with no family, no home and no stability.

stupid is not the same as lacking in opportunities/information, sadly many children lack the opportunities/information that so many others have. Please, dont call people stupid for not being 'clever' enough to be born to well-off/sensible parents.

My bad, I wasn't taking into account special circumstances such as the above.
