this has all really proven my point though, it seems that in everyone's mind there is something socially off limits from what they are into, which is "too nerdy". if your detached from video games, you see that as nerdy. If you play those, tabletop gameing is nerdy. if you play those, Live action role playing is too nerdy, ect.

I've been D&Ding for a few weeks now and the group that i play with is slowly gathering more members. I hounistly don't care what other people think, if it makes you happy, go with it.

Been playing MTG for a while now and just started D&D not too long ago. I really don't care what my friends think. Actually, some of them who were repulsed by the idea of playing D&D are ones I've convinced to join. Oh sweet, sweet irony.

Normally when people call it nerdy ( this is with no clue what it is ) I put them in a special area of my mind. The prick zone. I hate it when games like this are called nerdy for no reason then because it is! Just keep it on the down low

Always remember Warhammer. Warhammer is nerdy to the max.
And fucking expensive.

Anyway, I think it's ironic that people denounce tabletop or card games as 'nerdy' when, if you want to play them, friends (or hostages) are required.

I'm more surprised someone recently got into Magic; I thought it was just fading away. Seriously, though, there are so many tiers to nerddom. I love Star Trek/Wars, D&D, comics, LOTR, all sorts of stuff. But I've never read Lovecraft, don't LARP and will not memorize sports statistics.
What I'm saying is, all kinds of nerd look down on all sorts of nerd. I'm glad you aren't fitting into a convenient box for your schoolmates, because if there's one thing I hate, it's close-mindedness.
That said, LARPing is the devil.
You know, there's a place in Pittsburgh about a mile from where I live that people LARP at twice a month. My friends and I kinda want to crash it by putting a big viking helmet on one of our cars, driving in and running out of the car with $5 viking attire on and just smash them. I'm too afraid of doing that, liking it and then starting to LARP myself.

MTG is fine as long as you want to spend your life hanging around with ugly and/or fat people.

Yes, these are social taboos and usually aren't as widely accepted as they should be.

I don't know about Magic, but I was jumped in to D&D by quite possibly one of the greatest ladies men I've ever known. It's mindboggling how much geekier he is then me, yet still manages the lasses somewhat better then I do (and thats not an empty statement!).

Honestly mate, as long as you steer clear of L.A.R.P.ing, you should be in the clear.

Frankly I've never had a social problem as a result of my playing both games in addition to a host of other nerdy things (saying I'm a dragon to most people being chief among them). I find that people who write the games off either know almost nothing about either activity or are uncomfortable with themselves. I don't find people willing to segregate me based on my nerdy habits to be worth my time.

Magic the Gathering was the least of my nerdy habits when I got into it. I was pretty much the de facto head of the anime club by that point, was starting to ST some old World of Darkness games, and hung out in the library a lot of the time. M:tG was my social gathering.

I started playing Magic when I was eight. Nobody has ever really cared unless they also play.

Also, I didn't know that the community at Miami (yes, I looked at your profile) was like that. I've only vaguely ever considered the school, though. That place looked like something out of the industrial revolution.

Honestly, I've never seen issues with Magic or DnD. I know a few years ago MTG was the big thing around here, so its never been a big deal. What actually surprised me was finding out my friend, who had been captain of his school's wrestling team for social placement, had actually done some DnD. At this point, I'd been doing it for years and just couldn't comprehend groups like that existing. Thanks to that, its kinda normal now...
