How about two adventureres done like the couple on top of a wedding cake and an ilithid behind a dm screen. Have a couple dice around the place with the 20 on a d20 facing up. Then have written on it "You roll a nat 20 on skill check live happily ever after".

First off, love the idea OP. I've never heard of a grooms cake before but I think its a great idea.

As for my suggestion, how about some kind of battle? A group of adventurers (a 'standard' party) fighting a Dragon or something of that stature.

Either way, good luck with it all =D

Get a cake of a Warforged! That would be, to quote a well loved game critic, "Totally fucking sweet"

Either that or the D&D logo

Thanks everyone for the suggestions but I'm still having trouble. We have a lot of people saying Gelatinous Cube, but that's really jello not cake
I wasn't suggesting the whole cake be a gelatinous cube.. I thought maybe something like a group of adventurers fighting a Beholder in a dungeon scene, with a gelatinous cube in the scene, just because I think that would be neato.

Kobold! No wait, too small.

Something like this would be awesome.

And can you people stop telling him how sad he is, how he should have a traditional cake (If you'd read his posts you'd realise he IS having a traditional cake), and how he should tell his wife (He has).

Good on you. Weddings should reflect the people after all

I'm not sure how I'd make it look good but one of my thoughts was having the wizard from Dungeons and Dragons the animated series http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085011/ pulling the new iconic gnome from his hat http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx?x=dnd/toon/20071219a What do people think about that?
I LOVED that program as a kid. That would also be a good idea.

You do realise that the wedding is for the woman? As much as I hate to be the killjoy on this one, if you throw a D&D themed wedding for you and the grooms, and your wife is cool with it, I'd wager she's not and this is going to haunt you for the rest of your *coughshortcough* marrige.
And men aren't supposed to get something out of it, ever?

If my fiance wants a D&D cake, I'd not only be excited about it but would be going over so many ideas with him that we'd ask the rest of our group to help us narrow things down.

As for an idea, OP, a beholder eating a bunch of dice (20's, 4's, 8's, 10's etc)

That cake looks amazing.
How about a d20 die? Or...

What Shewolf51 said, but not with the "Happy Birthday", and bigger.
Congratulations on the going to get married.

How about this the death knight charging up a ramp of dead hobgoblins from OOTS.
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0436.html
Nothing says DnD like OOTS also you should have "explosive runes" written in small pink icing on the cake.

This dragon is a cake.
Your argument is invalid.

Really, though, the most epic D&D cake would be some kinda cookie cake that you actually played the game on.
It would be a true D&D cake.

You should make your cake look like a battle grid of a castle or a church or something with figurines of you and your wife. along with a d20 on the grid board as if you rolled it.

Ok, so for anyone who's interested the wedding is now in less than 3 weeks and the cake designs are final, I'll make sure to post some pictures when we get back from our honeymoon. The cake will be a bust of the character Presto from the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon rolling dice. He'll be placed behind a battle mat which will have some terrain and minis that have been converted and painted to look like the Gnome from the new D&D animated shorts holding his badger Francis out in front of him while confronting the Beholder from on of the other shorts. I was going to go with something more along the lines of what was suggested with it begin a full Beholder cake but that turned out to be cost prohibitive. Thank you all for your advice and wish me luck.

Technically it's a D&D themed Groom's Cake, our wedding cake will be a very traditional four tiered square cake, although we are including a joke in it. As I am Native American and she is African American the cake will be marbled Red Velvet and Chocolate.

My lady is letting me have a D&D grooms cake too. She's all over the wedding cake though, man. Girly and frilly. I'm thinking battle mat, edible dice, and minis on it.

But my vote goes for
Oh, yes, I vote for this one!

Or you could go for something iconic. Someone mentioned a beholder, which is always a good choice. It's also round.

Another option would be to choose something from your favorite setting? Eberron, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Ravenloft, Golaron (Pathfinder setting), etc all have notable characters and creatures that could provide a theme for your cake.

Still, I gotta say, that book cake is amazing.

OP: Just one question - your bride is okay with this, right?

I'm for a cake of a dungeon map with the party in it and lots and lots of killed kobolds, oh god I hate kobolds.
