Hey guys. So I just bought the 4th Edition Red Box and I have a quick question about the game.

I made a wizard and one of my powers, Phantasmal Force says its attack is Intelligence vs. Will.
Does that mean that I roll a d20 then add my intelligence, or do I add my attack bonus? Thanks in advance Escapists.

I'll spell it out for you

-"I'm using my Phantasmal Force ability it's intelligence vs will
- roll the d20 and add your attack bonus to it
- "I got a 17."(always tell if that is with or without your attack bonus)
- The DM tells you whether it hits or not then you would roll for damage

Hope that helps =).

In the case of your magical attack, your intelligence IS your attack bonus. If it were a weapon attack, your attack bonus would be strength plus the proficiency of the weapon. A wizard adds only his int mod until he starts acquiring items and other methods to add to it.

Hope this helps. Happy gaming :D

They still sell the 3.5 rulebooks, I think. As long as a rule set is popular they keep it in circulation even though there's a new ruleset out.

When making an attack with a power, you add the base attack bonus and the modifier for the stat shown on the attack. So in this case, you add the base attack bonus plus your Intelligence.

Right, it's d20 + your intelligence Modifier. Though I havn't played 4.0 yet...and I have little hope NWN3 will be any good, which is a shame cause 4.0 is skadayumn made for a videogame.

unrelated hint OP, bin your 4e books, burn everything that may have come into contact with them (and everything that may have come into contact with the things that came into contact with the books) and get yourself the d20modern ruleset.

You're welcome.

Why do that when there's BESM?

OT: Your question has been answered for you, but I have wondered what all comes with it? I'm thinking about grabbing it as an X-mas present to myself. Plus, with the changes the Red Box is supposed to introduce to 4e, it's the only way I can get a friend of mine to play it with me. <3 4e

Nope, no trolling. I'm really wanting to get the Red Box, to see what changed. I plan on comparing it to my PH. Besides, Wizards has specifically marketed the Red Box for people who didn't like core 4e. Read the articles The Escapist has published on it.

Also, I prefer BESMd20 over D20 Modern. So much more freedom to do so much.

If you care, I'm a player of Dragon Age, 4e, 3.5, and BESM

I've been told Red Box is an awesome introduction, but not much else. I've also been told Essentials is mostly a terrible line, given it takes the attempt at balance inf 4E and chucks it out the window, going back to 3.X concepts of "Wizards rule, fighters drool."

I'm tempted to get the Red Box solely to try and entice players to give 4E a shot (I'm surrounded by diehard AD&D or 3.X fans, so I haven't even tried 4 yet), but otherwise....

And i prefer BESM over D20 Modern as well. It may not be the best game ever, but I never really liked D20M rules.

And why would OP be welcome?

Please explain your inclination that the 4.0 rule-set would make better kindling than a game.

I've played 3.5, and I've played 4.0, and I find 4.0 to be much easier to set up, play, and modify. The d20 Modern is fine, but it seems not unlike 3.5. Actually even more unnecessarily complicated, especially when it comes to combat. Although, I do like how the classes are based on abilities. That was pretty cool.

And by modifying I mean establish satisfactory resolutions to rule disputes. In terms of actually modifying elements it's a damn nuisance. Not impossible, but difficult as all get-out.

On a similar note, OP, do check out White Wolf's stuff while you're in the market for RPGs. The new World of Darkness is one of my favorites, and Exalted isn't too bad if you can get past all the "munchkin-ism". At the very least it's a unique fantasy setting.

I've never seen them to buy in a store. Some of the guys that I've played 3.5 with had the books from ebay, but most played with PDF files.

I don't know where you live, but where I am they don't sell 3.5 anymore. You basically have to find it at a secondhand store when someone sells their old books. Granted, that's still only the core ones. As much as I do love having a paper copy, getting books of all the PDF files I have got my hands on would probably collapse my shelf.
