Okay, so like, either a tutorial is terrible or it's great. Ironically, some very similar games had such different tutorials, such that one is crappy, and the other one is the best tutorial ever.
Okay, First, I could write a fucking book on how much the opening to skyrim Sucks, but the tutorial is the worst bit. Okay, firstly, you figure out running and jumping in a pretty decent manner. Then, boom, some guy stops the plot to have you picking shit up, without even needing instructions. Here's where it gets bad, it makes a like, thirty word explanation on how to open your inventory, and it shows you how to put things in your right hand, but not how to put things in your left hand. Then, a few minutes later, and you're stabbing shit, or rather, that's what you're doing if you've played a first person game before, which a lot of it's players haven't. Later, it gives you a bow and some arrows, but makes no explanation of how they work. Then more violence, and you're at some cage, there's some loot in that cage, you try to open the door, and it gives you a clear as mud lockpicking tutorial. And there's the freaking stealth encounter, which noticably, if you fail it, there's no way to figure out what you did wrong without risking organ displacement by something much stronger than the bear. than they ditch you, without even mentioning how to do magic, how to learn magic, how to use the "favorite item" system, or even how to use your left hand.
Now, say what you will about Fallout:new vegas, but it has an awesome tutorial. Firstly, you are stuck learning the RPG mechanics, and creating a character and that shit, then this dude tells you where you can learn the rest of the stuff, but if you've played fallout, or really any FPS before, then not much is left to discover, and you can go out and head for the desert. OR if you're new to this whole "video game" concept, you can talk to this one chick, who is clearly labeled on your compass, and you get an unintrusive, yet helpful tutorial on how to make things dead, after which, you can leave knowing how to do the one thing you will be doing in fallout, even though you've never touched a controller before. Or you can keep taking tutorials from this person, which shows you everything, and even drops you a questline for what is basically babys first war. You can do this battle, then you have nothing left to keep you here. In addition to that, whenever you decide you're done with the tutorial, you can redo your character with the knowledge that you've just gained
