ON one of my time through New Vegas, the time I sided with the Legion, I got to the second to last mission (the one where you assassinate the NCR President) and had saved (overwriting my main file) right when the President was making his way to the stage and had auto saved as well. I tried to shoot the President while he was walking, and was promptly gunned down by NCR and Rangers. Then, due to a glitch, every time I loaded either the auto save or the manual save, I'd automatically draw my weapon and fire.
If I loaded my secondary file I would have lost over five hours of gameplay. I figured if I was going to have to replay five hours of the game, I might as well start over from the very beginning, which I did.

I've had problems where ill play for a long time on any game and not save, and then the power goes out.
It's happened to me so bad once that i lost all enthusiasm for the game and didnt go back to it. -_-

My worst experience with this was in Gun. After I'd installed the PC version I played it for the entire rest of the day under the impression that it auto-saved. I probably got through more than half of the main game. The next day I start the game up again to finish it and...wait a second. Why am I at the part just after the tutorial? Where is the autosave? It DID auto-save right?! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME! *ragequits*

I never played that game again.

I played Twilight Princess for about 5 hours just sidequesting and getting money. Then, when I was riding around Hyrule Field, for no reason, the game went to the start menu.

I lost the entire day's progress. For no reason.

Mass Effect. Alot. Going through an unskippable conversation before each boss fight... So frustrating.

Dragon Age. I was 23 hours in on my first file and the game gliched and wouldn't update a main quest. I realize this right before it auto saves and leaves me stuck. I had to start the game over. I was...a little ticked off.

Mass Effect 2 has frozen on the very first loading screen (before you even get a chance to save) of the game a few times for me, so I had to go through the same 20 minute intro. At least it's an interesting few scenes.

Doctor What said:
Persona 3 and 4 are terrible for this reason only. In the later dungeons, there are monsters that have the ability to insta kill you.

BAM. Three hours of frustration gone.

Screw you. Seriously.
Yesss..this.
It is even more maddening when you get that game over when ONLY the Main Character dies. Because what goes better with a game where enemies are known for being able to completely demolish party members than a system where one of the four people in your party results in an immediate loss no matter how many dozens of revival items you are hauling around.

I don't have this problem at all. I would say I have the complete opposite problem, I save way too much, it's an impulse like reloading in shooters, I save about every 45 seconds. I also prefer to make each save a brand new save (except for auto saves or quick saves). I play PC games so the save size isn't a huge issue.

This is also a problem though and has led to many issues. For example, I will save or hit the quick save button right before a rock falls on me, or I get hit with a trap, or I get shot by a sniper, so that save is completely useless because if I reload it I am instantly dead.

When I go through games like Mass Effect 2 I often max out the amount of possible saves available and have to overwrite older saves :( .

While recovering my gamertag in August, I accidentally deleted the profile and all associated items from the hard drive of my 360. Associated items in 360 terms are ALL save files. Basically I lost all the progress I had in any game over 2.5 years.

-Snipperooski-

It's a testament to this topic that I'm getting pissed just thinking about the Persona series.

Auto-save is your friend. I got in trouble with Dragon Age the first time I played through it, and soon got into a habit of manual saving about every 15 minutes, or after a long dialogue/armor upgrade. But mostly, these days, I only save when I stop playing, due to the blissful number of autosaves available. Especially for Adventure/Sandbox titles now.

For Christmas years and years ago, my parents got me a ps2 and FFX for Christmas, with no memory card....... and the house we lived in had a bad power problem, so i tried to just have hem PS2 on while I was gone, and the power would go out again and again, or if i was killed i had to restart. we lived out in the country and didn't go to town very often so it took a few months to get a memory card.

My worst would be when I was originally playing through Half-Life 1.
One of the loading screens (and thus the auto-save) was in between entering through the roof of a building and landing on the floor.
For some reason, I'd tried to throw a grenade through the door in front of me as I fell (just before the loading screen).
Naturally, I missed and the grenade was near my feet after the loading screen.
But, it wasn't the grenade that killed me. It was the 10-20 explosive boxes placed around this (very small) room.

Because of the auto-save, it was a case of load, explode, die, repeat.
And as I had played all the way through to this part in one sitting, I had not made any manual saves.
Half-Life 1 has (or had at that point, I don't know if it's changed) only one automatic auto-save slot that gets overwritten every time, guess what that save contained...

As HL1 didn't include a chapter system as refined as those in the Source games, it took me forever to try to go back a bit, failed to do so, and then gave up, installed HL:Source (with the chapters), unlocked said chapters and started that entire section again.

Wasn't much fun dealing with that... :(

Learnt my lesson about saving since though.

The Fallout games have made me an obsessive compulsive saver, meaning I manually save the game every 5-10 minutes, because those games often crash like a *****.

Mass Effect 2, uni year one, allnighter. 4-6 hours'worth of missions etc were fucked over when I hit an "autosave screenfreeze". Restarted my Xbox thinking "no biggie" and realised I'd lost everything since my last manual save the day before. D:

Fallout 2. I'm so used to autosaving, I didn't even think about it. Played for 5 hours straight then died. Lost all my progress.
