I want a GoW rip off of Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Only a matter of time!
Only your not either Romeo or Juliet but Shakespeare regretting what he's done, travelling into his own mind and slaughtering everyone, if it was going to be a COMPLETE GoW rip-off it would have you sleep with Juliet at some point.

WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA slow your roll. Your telling me that it bothers you that Dante's inferno the game has nothing to do with the inferno of the Divine Comedy. ALright. However i mean one it's a game and not a teaching tool. And Second and most importantly nobody can look me staright in the eye and tell me that this game isn't a COMPLETE rip off of God of War. The combat the style i mean you name it. God of war is a title that is safe to say idk 90% of the gamer masses have played and enjoyed wickedly...Yet...Nobody complains that GoW's story completely butchers Greek mythology now do they?
Like I stated, it does rip off GoW combat system but youve got a good point. I guess since less people worship those gods anymore and the Divine Comedy is what shaped the churchs view of what hell is like is why im making a big deal about it.

It's a pity they didn't turn Dante's Inferno into a Silent Hill style rip off. Wandering around being upset and fainting were pretty much all Dante the Pilgrim did in the poem anyway. It would have been really interesting to work Dante's social commentary and reflective thoughts into a psychologically deep game.

Is the game ripping the title off a bit? Sure but I think there are some moments of authentic inspiration to be had, even if only in tone.

Maybe it's the idealism of my profession coming through but if a mediocre game like this causes more people to actually read the written work I'd say it's worth the whole ordeal.
You also make a valid point, it would please me to see more people picking up the comedy cause of the game. or at least dante's inferno. the only reason i have less respect for the professionals behind this game is because it's EA. and i still wanna rent the game to see how closely it connects to the actual poem.

Well, it woulda been a pretty boring game if all you did was walk around hell for a while as a poet before trying your luck in pergatory and heaven. "Press X to change rhyme scheme" doesn't make for much of a game...

The key words is "loosely" based. As in, there's a guy named Dante, and he's going to Hell. That's pretty much where the similarities stop. I don't really care though, it's a great game.

Well can a game be a full representation of a novel or even any source material?

I mean if you hate on Dante's just look at God of War? Is that an accurate retelling of greek mythos? No the developer complete destroys thousand of years of mythology to write a story. Look at WWII games they don't give an accurate representation of WWII do they? No they create there own plot lines to make the game FUN while keeping the setting/over all back story the same.

The setting is solid i must say and interesting. How many other games have been made is a medieval christians perspective of hell? It is not only extremely bold but also well pulled off. The setting is riddled with interesting set pieces and dripping with atmosphere.

It's ridiculous that Dante's is getting so much flak for being a rip-off while people can adore other titles that do the same thing. Hows about this play the game yourself without a bias and determine your own ideas about it.

I for one enjoy the experience. I there an over all town of actually being somewhere that you don't want to mess with that I haven't felt in a game since Bioshock. The combat is tight and fluid. The good/evil mechanic is interesting in that it forces you to play different. The enemies are varied and while they repeat how they go about throwing them at you is always exciting. My only major problems so far is the big beast you ride seem to cumbersome and slow. Also the gluttony level is far too short.

Yeah, I thought Gluttony was awesome when I first saw it, why was it so short.

I think the problem for me with the game was it was just too short with little replayability. I just paid $10 for a rental (yeah, it sucks to rent games now), and only 2 days into my rental period, I've already completed the game, and playing it again isn't as fun.

Well that's because it doesn't try to focus on Greek mythology but on Kratos shoving swords into peoples throats and having sex, Dante's Inferno was actually trying to be like the poem Dante's Inferno but it didn't do that.
Who said that? Everywhere I've read says that the game creators took "creative liberties" with the poem in order to make it into a game. God of War's title leads one to believe it is about the God of War, and perhaps about Greek gods. If the title of Dante's Inferno was The Divine Comedy, then maybe I can see where you're coming from. It gets the nine circles of hell right, which is alright in my book. It's not titled the Divine Comedy, so I'm not expecting an exact representation.
