I can't believe how awful power rangers is. It seemed amazing when I was a kid.

I'm pretty sure some of the Japanese Power Ranger spin-offs was dark and grown up. I just remember seeing it in a Japanese magazine when I was younger so maybe it wasn't Power Rangers :p.
Ya got it backwards. Power Rangers is a spinoff of the Japanese Super Sentai.

Speaking of which, I would prefer it to be mature, but still child oriented. Like Toy Story 3 or Follow That Bird.

It already exists. It's called Guyver the live-action movie.

Also a Anime which I am going to go out on a limb and say the movie was based on.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I don't mind a show that isn't afraid to get a little dark or explore more adult themes. But you don't do that by making things grim and gritty. That guy who linked to the TV Tropes page of the Dark Age of Comics hit the nail on the fucking head...

Am I the only one who sees this continuing trend of people wanting to somehow legitimize or indulge their childhood fantasies by giving them a cursory coat of gritty paint? You can't make a dark and grown-up movie about a band of crime-fighting friends who dress in matching pastel suits and fight Rita Repulsa, the evil space Empress. Some things are just intrinsically childish.

When am I going to see a "Let's make a dark and gritty Yo Gabba Gabba reboot" thread?

Honestly that sounds kinda stupid...maybe they could make it work but the source material isn't that dark or grown up so I dunno

While I would come here and say that this is a phenomenally bad idea, which it is, I think it's worth noting, that if you told the average person in the 60's that a dark and gritty Batman film would not only be made, but be voted into the top 10 movies ever in a vote involving hundreds of thousands of people, you'd be scoffed into oblivion.

You know "Dark and grown up Power Rangers" is an oxymoron, right? They're called fucking "Power Rangers". And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Power Rangers are already darker and grittier than the sentai they're based on.

If you want men in suits doing karate to even try being serious, you're gonna have to go for something like Kamen Rider.

Yes, but with one important plot point...
Kimberly is the villain.
No Rita, only Kimberly...

Also, on a related note...

You want dark and gritty? How bout the Power Rangers being cooked alive? How's that for morbid?

This is definitely a point. It's kinda the same thing with the Avengers doing so well with a mainstream audience. There must have been a time when that seemed pretty implausible. Of course, superhero media had to go through a number of transitional phases before they got to the point of the Dark Knight and Avengers, and I do not think Power Rangers has exactly done the requisite legwork for that.

Dark and gritty? No. But perhaps something with a tone not unlike the first TMNT movie. Plus with the success of the Avengers (superhero team) and Transformers series (giant robots) it's not a completely crazy idea from a studio point of view. I was actually thinking about making a topic like this.
This.

Not that a dark and adult power rangers movie wouldn't be good in it's own right, getting rid of some of the sillier nature would kind of diminish it's charm.

Not quite.

At all.

As someone noted prior, we already have a dark and demented super sentai. It's called Guyver, and it's fucking awesome.

That said, I certainly wouldn't mind a more vulgar, more self-aware Power Rangers. Perhaps just once the forces of evil could be smote quite literally by the Power Rangers and their ever-righteous thundercocks of justice.

Of course, it'd take a deft hand to make that not suck. I think.

Well I don't think you would class them as 'gritty', but some of the Super Sentai series (the Japanese show where Power Rangers take their fight footage from) can be quite mature and more adult oriented. I guess it comes from the fact that after 36 years, they've amassed quite a large adult fanbase from the kids who grew up watching it.

And who needs a Power Rangers movie when we have this?

Anyway while I'm all for some sort of remake or re-imagining of the original Power Rangers, I wouldn't want it all dark and grown up, it just wouldn't be as fun. What many people seem to forget when talking about this is Power Rangers have never stopped, new seasons are being made to this day, with a 20th anniversary season coming next year. They do not need to try and reconnect with the old fans when they have plenty of kids loving the newer shows.

No. Power rangers is a kid's show. Leave it there. Dramatically changing the style of something to try and retool the audience is a bad move.

This is pretty much as close to a mature version of Power Rangers you can get.

If I was you though, I would seriously check the superior anime, most notably the 80's OVA series.

It was the first mature styled anime I ever watched, brilliant stuff.

It was one of the first anime shows I ever saw, too.

Looking back at it, it was a pretty fucking weird show. It had basically the same concept as Power Rangers - with all the goofy camp that came along with it - but it was laden with extreme violence and body horror.

I sure do miss the Eighties.

Dark and grown up? Like, sad, depressing sub-plots to add to the depth of the characters? I know! Maybe Yellow Ranger is reduced to turning tricks on the street to keep her children fed? Ooh! Ooh! Maybe Blue Ranger develops a violent, self-destructive addiction to smack? I think that'd be fantastic. Maybe, in a shocking twist, Red Ranger turns out to be Yellow Ranger's baby-daddy.

That's it, I'm starting a script for this. Just you wait, Legendary Films will pick up my script, and I will officially be the screenwriter for the dark film adaptation of Power Rangers, most likely directed by Zack Snyder, knowing his taste in film direction. It will be luke-warm with the critics, but will develop a devoted cult following.

Just you wait!!
Blue ranger is cleary too smart to be addicted to smack. Having glasses automatically makes you the most intelligent person in whatever storyline you happen to be in.

I would know about "dark" but I do know what a grown up Power Ranger would be like-
Well ok that show is more of a Voltron parody.

Ugggh. What is this compulsion to take everything from our childhoods and make it all dark and disturbing? What do we gain from polluting everything pure and innocent?
