If you go online you'll automatically re-update the game. For some reason steam thinks that "don't automatically update" means "don't automatically update when steam starts, but update the moment I want to actually play the game."
That isn't weird at all. If you are going to play the game, which starts in online mode, then you need to be updated to the supported version of the game used by everyone else.

OT: Why would they need to nerf spells? They are only a threat to fat roll characters or when you run out of stamina. And they weren't that strong for PvE either, lightning has always done more.
But what if I don't want to play the game with other people and the reason I want to be online is strictly for the sake of using steam chat or something else that has nothing to do with the game? Nope, if the game starts and your steam account is online you're forced to update whether you want to use the updated version of the game or not, even if you've specifically told steam that you don't want to automatically update.

I think its a pretty safe assumption for Steam to assume that if your account is online and you start a game, the game should be in its online mode. And the automatic updates are more to keep the updates from interfering with your connection while you are doing something else.

That's a terrible assumption to make, especially since updates can literally BREAK YOUR GAME and make it completely unplayable (not in this case, just as a general rule, it's happened more than once).

It's not a terrible assumption at all. Dark Souls 2 is an online game. It can be played offline when no connection is available(i.e. Steam in in offline mode), but the developer intent is that you play the game online, else there would be an in-game option to play offline instead of relying on Steam to be offline. And in any online game(that I'm aware of), you have to be playing the same version as everyone else.

It's not "Steam is online, thus you must want to play the game online too." It's "you are online, Steam is online, and the game is an online game. Therefore the game is updating so that you can play the game." I understand that some people don't like the way multiplayer is set up in Dark Souls. That's cool. There are games I don't like features of too. And if said features bother me enough, I don't play them.

You aren't going to make From change the way that multiplayer works in Dark Souls. You aren't going to change the nature of the game. You have the option of forgoing online activity altogether(which is more than a lot of online games offer). But if you want to partake in any online features, you get all of them. If that isn't to your preference, you have the option of playing other games.

A game designed for online play assuming you want to play online when you are online is not a terrible assumption.

I'm not just talking about Dark Souls, I'm talking about steam. Steam in general, whether a game is an online game or not, forces updates upon you, whether you want them or not, and has no option to roll back updates, and I was pointing out how bizarre that is when consoles allow you to not only forgo updating games (which will disable online), but also allow you to completely remove updates that you've applied. Consoles generally give players less control over their games than PC, and in this case I think that steam is really screwing the pooch with the absence of a way to manually undo updates, especially considering the fact that updates for PC games are known to make certain games unplayable with certain unpredictable combinations of hardware and software.

This has nothing to do with the way the dark souls multiplayer works, nor was I arguing that dark souls' multiplayer has to somehow be changed to accommodate something. Chill your britches.

IMO, that's less a problem with the way Steam works(though I'll grant you Steam needs improvements) and more with everyone tying their damn games to Steam in the first place. You used to have control over when your game was patched(with the consideration for online games that I mentioned in my previous post). Then people thought that it would be great to have a gaming front end that was also a store. Which it is not. It was only a matter of time before Valve started leveraging its profits to force games into it s ecosystem. Now we all pay the price for that.

A third party front end should never be mandatory, but now that it is, you get to play by Valve's rules. Or EA's if the game you play is on Origin. Personally, I prefer just having shortcut icons in a folder. Marginally less convenience; significantly more control.

Yeah, it's part of the reason why Dark Souls 2 sucks... Relatively speaking, it's still good enough.

These guys don't know what they're doing with this one. Someone should have let them make a extra DLC for Dark Souls, then make Dark Souls 2. Get a feel for the game and how it goes and not... make a mess and call it a proper desert for a masterful dinner, when it's just fast food ice cream.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
