This game is ruined by these glitches and those of you who disagree are the reason I decided to type up this long post. If you dont want a challenge in a game go play Cars 2 or Megamind and stay out of the games that are meant to be challenging...

Hey, congratulations, you've just discovered what happens in every single multi-player game ever. People cheat. They hack. They exploit. And then they use the gains to fuck over other players. Saying it 'ruins' the entire game is a bit hyperbolic, even if you do prefer the multi-player aspect to the purely single-player experience.

I'd say that your invading (relatively) low level players with your level 1 character who's decked out in powerful gear is unfair and 'ruins' the game, see how it works? Just because you got it legitimately doesn't make it any less 'unfair' for the person you're killing, and is there any specific way that you can tell just by being invaded that someone has exploited the glitch? From what I know, there's minimal interaction between players and beyond seeing their gear on them physically you don't get to inspect them or anything. And if you can get the same gear at level 1, how do you know, without a doubt, that these people haven't done it as well?

Your complaining in this thread amounts to about the same thing I'd expect to read on the Blizzard forums over a level 25 character being killed in one-shot by a level 85 character on a PvP realm in World of Warcraft. Yeah, it sucks. But unless they scale level and stats for every single zone (which would be a pretty significant change and take a fair amount of code, potentially breaking other parts of the game) there's very little they can actually do about it.

I don't understand at all how exploiting glitches to give oneself an unfair advantage is fun.

At all.
Greifing is fun, believe me.

Is there a way to talk to people in this game? If not then it wouldn't be nearly as fun to piss them off.

Read the title and my mmochamp "prick" switch kicked in. Nobody is making you use this issue, nobody will think less of you for not doing it. Stop crying and just play the shitting game. This line of thought is the same as what I see in wow arguments every other day
Second. Nobody made you use it, you decided to exploit a glitch, I have no sympathy for you. And yeah, you get a couple of people who use the glitch to get high level equip on low-level chars, and a few people who use it to skip to the higher levels.

1. Why are you doing PvP at low level?

2. At high level, you should have maxed out equip anyway, and so any glitch based advantage they had is gone.
The souls series has an invasion (drop in drop out) multiplayer. They might be in human form looking to be able to summon phantoms (something that can progress certain NPC story lines) and simply get help with a difficult boss. They could also simply be ignorant of what undead and human form do.
I know how the PVP works. Invasions really aren't that common to be a big enough problem to "ruin the game".

Wasn't the bottomless box glitch fixed in a recent patch? It's not on PC, anyway.

The game's easy once you know how to do it. It's only soul-crushing hard the first time through.

That said... I still don't think people should cheat, even on subsequent playthroughs. The fact that they understand the game should make it easy enough.
and Demons Souls had the soul dup glitch fixed before we got it state side

... so ... what are you whining about exactly?

To some extend I would say let people do what the want. The reason I won't do this here is because the Multiplayer aspect of Dark Souls is such a weird one that you can't -really- know if the person you'll end up playing with/against has used this glitch...

The experience is not really ruined for people that don't use this glitch, because you can choose to not summon a co-op phantom to aid you with fights. If you intent on summoning a co-op partner then you already have the goal to finish the chapter/boss fight successfully, rather than having a partner that is ill-equipped for the encounter. So in that way I don't really object. However, I can see my experience being ruined if somebody invaded me and had used this glitch to their benefit, resulting in an unfair fight, then I would say that yes my experience has suffered as a direct result. Especially if a red phantom invades (because they're supposed to be of a lower soul level than you, generally.) the fight was intended to be in your favor, but you'll encounter a guy with unbalanced gear at that Soul level. Yeah that would suck.
As far as I know there's no way to repel any attempt of being invaded (not counting the blue spirits)..

Dark Souls would be around 100x more fun if multiplayer matchmaking were based on the total value (in souls) of a player's gear rather than his/her soul level. There's no good reason why a brand new player making his/her way through the Undead Burg for the very first time should have to suffer +5 lightning weapons and maxed pyromancy.
That. Is. Completely, and totally. Fucking. BRILLIANT! Just one question. Would it use the souls you would get if you fed the item to Frampt or would a separate soul value be set based on the item's stats.

Thank you and your common sense. I'd wish other people would use theirs a bit more often or at least read the damn OP before posting. What people don't understand is that the multiplayer adds something to the game, it's part of the experience you're promised when you buy it. How important it is completely depends on the player.

I was looking forward to invasions and co-op. They add a certain feeling of constant dread, on top of the game's difficulty. Unfortunately, I never got to chance to properly play the way the game was intended to be played. I could not play as a hollow as you miss out on sidequests if you're not human and playing offline meant losing the ability to play co-op.

It's making sacrifices because a shitload of assholes decided it would be fun to prey on new players by exploiting glitches. I had been invaded 8 times before I decided to play offline. 2 of them were legit players that provided a very intense and fun battle. The other 6 completely destroyed me, even though I managed to hit every single one of them like a million times.

Some of them even taunted me by attacking though my shield with their lightning shotels (or whatever) and then just running around me. I managed to kill one of those griever fucks though. He kept chasing me and running around me as an attempt to taunt me. Stupid asshole followed me up to the corner of the platform and I combo-kicked him off of it. That was my last online battle, as I went offline afterwards. I found out the guy had sent me hate-mail for being a noob after I went back online days later.

This post is the perfect example. You CAN tell the hackers from the ones who earned their high level gear for low levels by how they act. If they fight unskilled and assholey, odds are good they couldn't beat the game without the glitch let alone beat it without leveling up much.

I don't see how this ruins the game for YOU. Does it really matter if other players are cheating? I feel kind of good that I played through both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, while others have had to resort to cheating to win.

Hyperbole alert. If it's so bad, just don't touch multiplayer. It doesn't add much to the game - I barely touched it.
Just because YOU didn't touch it , doesn't mean no one else wants to . And multiplayer is a pretty good aspect of the game , which you'd know if you actually touched it :/ .
What I'm saying is that just because an optional and fairly minor aspect of the game doesn't work 100% properly, doesn't mean the whole game is ruined.

I have noticed this too XD, its completeley impractical. All you have to do is move to the side a bit. I play as a fairly fast character and can run circles around them.

OT: hm, i guess im lucky to have not encountered any glitchers yet. The other day a powerful woman invaded, but unfortunatly for them i had summoned two fairly powerful phantoms. Seeing them turn tail in realisation was most entertaining :D

I did lose on another though, but that was my fault. Should not have fought on a cliff face... i realised too late they had the "holy force" miracle" D:

One last thing OP: I dont see how you can complain, since you used the glitches yourself.

If you own this game go ahead and start up a Pyromancer and play through the game without leveling up until you are able to fight The Four Kings. Fighting The Four Kings regularly on any character is a challenge in itself but doing so with a level 1 literally Quadruples the difficulty. My weapon of choice for the fight was the Chaos Reinforced Club +2 and due to being level one and not being able to dish out enough damage before killing one before the other; you end up fighting 3-4 of the kings at once. Now not only does this require an insane amount of skill, but it also requires a lot of planning to do before hand. I did this all fairly and my SL1 Darkwraiths gear is powerful but not completely impossible to be bested. I could run around in full Giants Armor but I don't because it takes the fun out of PvP by turning me into a indomitable brick s**t house. Also being apart of the Darkwraith covenant makes it so I can invade anyone(Meaning people higher level than me) I don't nearly see as many low levels as I do high levels when invading areas and beating them as a SL1 is very satisfying for me to do. If I see someone who isn't going to be a challenge or is using a method of cheating(Dragon head/body and Bow in left hand glitches ETC) I simple use the separation crystal and leave.

I manage to kill players 50-100x my level with gear that isn't the best and with a limited range of abilities unless necessary to use a weapon and a shield(Lightning Hand Axe +5 Chaos Reinforced Club +5, Crest Shield, Dragon Crest Shield) I only use the Ascended Flame +5 and the Dark Hand as a shield.

No average person can achieve this regularly without assistance and seeing as there are hundreds of the same type of class it is easy to determine that they aren't skilled enough to have reached that point in the first place.

I always wait to get invaded, and its fairly easy to piss off your invaders by using the bonfire before the Knights that have Dragonslayer Bows. By all means, use your low level with amazing gear and then i'll laugh as i kick you off a ledge or watch as you die to monsters. Glitch all you like, as a veteran of Demons Souls and a fairly decent Dark Souls player, i'll make you either rage quit or watch you die to things that make me laugh.

Long story Short:

Skill>Gear. Plus if you don't want to be invaded, run around hollow, can't be invaded then

While I do not condone the use of glitches the only glitch I used was the Dragon Head Soul Duplication glitch. I am in no way proud of using it, and If I could I would honestly undo it. I used the glitch to buy 99 of the materials from the Giant Blacksmith and doing so simply made it so I could finish upgrading gear on my characters, and looking back I really wish I could undo it because the character development is one of my favorite parts of the game and doing this was just sort of a like slapping myself in the face...But you know what they say "Hindsight is always 20-20"

I haven't played DS in a while now so it may be different, but this is how pretty much every PVP went. It's kinda funny when you think about it. Two brave knights in gleaming armor meet. They draw their giant weapons of war, and proceed to strafe around in circles until one of them scores a back stab.

What I'm reading here is "I'm better than all of these people, why are they capable of doing the same things I am!?"

Look, I get it, running into people who exploit glitches for their own gain and then use it to fuck over other people sucks. It does. I'm not denying that. But tone down the elitism. As soon as you start referring to other players of the game as an "average person", you're transcending the line beyond 'playing the game for fun'. I like to think I'm 'better than the average person' in World of Warcraft, because I'm sure the 'average' person hasn't killed Heroic Madness of Deathwing, no matter how pathetic it may be now. But I'm not going to go bitching on forums about how Blizzard has nerfed Dragon Soul by 35%, giving the 'average' players a better chance of experiencing the same content I've done.

All of your 'skill' in the game doesn't give you any more of a right to complain about how terrible the multi-player is being made by these exploiters. I'd argue that your 'skill' should make you complain less, since by all rights you should be able to decimate these exploiters if you're as good as you claim. Complain about the issues, by all means, but don't hold yourself up on some imaginary pedestal in the process. It's a game. You can complain about bullshit like item duplication without using anecdotal evidence proving how good you are at it. And regardless, given how many ways there are to avoid being invaded, I don't feel that this being broken 'ruins' the game, unless all you're playing it for is the multi-player component.

(And on that point I can't empathize, because I play in offline mode if I can help it. Never been a huge fan of multi-player in non-MMO's, and my connection likes to randomly drop out or slow down often enough that it'd be a pain for me anyway.)

Here's what I imagine:

- you'd have to use stats because too many items either have wonky soul values or none at all
- some weapons would need to be tweaked on an individual basis due to superior/inferior mods and/or special properties
- you would assign values to spells based on the magic adjust of the casting tool and the number of casts/relative strength of each spell
- armor values determined by the total soul value of ore spent upgrading it?
- rings/masks given a pass so that people still have incentive to collect certain items?
- when you lay down your invasion sign (or equivalent), your gear is frozen; no swapping after you zone in for easy kills

It wouldn't be perfect. There will always be odd loopholes and imbalances, and a player base in the hundreds of thousands will always find these issues. But even an imperfect matchmaking system based on a shaky valuation of gear would be infinitely preferable to one based solely on soul level.

Yeah it still gets a bit silly sometimes, people rolling about everywhere. My character isnt built for hits or blocking long. So out-manuvering is all i have D:
