Were there though? Cause as much as I love Dark Souls despite how absurdly stupid broken of a masterpiece it is, I can hardly remember playing anything else in 2011, to 2012........ to 2013....
I've only recently now reached the final stretch of life the game has left in it. Only one more month left, cmon man pull yourself together...
The wait is killing me too. You should definitely try out a new build to pass the time. I surprisingly had never made a pure DEX character before 2 weeks ago, so I made a ninja chick. She dual wields katanas and uses a bow to kill people I can't parry. Before that I was running a crossbow only build (dressed up as Marvelous Chester).
I've made way too many builds playing that game, and I mean too many, I played bow only, pure melee tank, whip only, calamity ring build, a hacker cosplay, the Oroboro R1 Falchion scrub build, you name it.
Had to put it down and move on. Now I'm just passing the time with Borderlands 2 and Bayonetta till March rolls around.

You weren't using the sniper crossbow for the Chester build were you? If yes, god bless your brave soul.

I tried using it, but the reload time is insane compared to other crossbows, and you don't even get a damage boost to make up the difference. I primarily used the heavy crossbow and the Avelyn (for giggles), though I did stupidly make them both +5 lightning. I'll probably get around to fixing that at some point, but I don't want to farm slabs anymore.

I actually put some of the gameplay up on youtube, but I lost most of it because I was keeping the raw video files on a flash drive that went missing.

On a semi-unrelated note, I wonder what people will think about Dark Souls II graphics and physics. They sure are putting a lot of money into marketing and what looks like fancier cutscenes. The actual game looks prettier (especially the lighting), but nothing really amazing. And we are in 2014. Maybe some will be disappointed.

Ehh, I like the game, and I think I am in a small minority that feels that this is the direction that Zelda should have gone.
This is the direction 3D Castlevanias should have gone, in my opinion.
Exactly! The very first Castlevania is a distant cousin of the Souls series. Everything wants to kill you in a grim dark setting... but nothing is deadlier than the awkward platforming mechanics.

The NES Castlevania's brilliant enemy placement is pretty similar. Especially on ledges. Instead of Medusa's heads, we get silver knight Archers in Anor Londo. I also felt there was a bit of influence from the Metroidvania games. Exploration and looting comes to mind.

Now I want to make a Belmont/Shanoa build.

You don't have to join the Chaos Servants to get the light-bulb helmet. Just go through Lost Izalith before you go through Tomb of Giants.

I have nothing else to add really.
I want to add on top of that the fact that there is the "Cast Light" sorcery which requires low intelligence, lasts for plenty of time to clear the Tomb in one or two castings, and is easy to acquire as soon as you are ready to kill the Hydra of Darkroot Garden. You can even cast it, rest at the bonfire, re-attune your magic, and still have enough time left on the spell to at least make it to the second bonfire. I still find it the best option.

And as for the OP, I very much prefer anger and bruised legs (because I punch them in my rage)over the gameplay of other games where I can half pay attention and still be fine. All games I've played either have cheap deaths/losses or extremely easy gameplay. If I can find a game that has neither, then I will be happy.

...I still think that bonewheels and the Bed of Chaos should not exist. I still have limits, and these... things break them.

As for the story, I usually read all the additional info on items and codex entries in other games, so I had no problems piecing together a story. It still has holes and isn't all that good besides, but I thought it was interesting to only have item descriptions for story.

I would agree but there's always Rayman Origins to interrupt it. Rayman Origins, where everybody has a distinct style and look, the maps are sharply designed and are infinitely fun to just explore. The platforming is fast and symbolises the quick descent into chaos that Rayman has been thrown into. The Ice World is implemented to represent the coldness of the enemies combined with the slippery nature of your allegiances and friendships (which I won't spoil), the grass world representing the juxtaposition between an idealic setting with a world wide threat merging together so well. I could go on.

The OP's jokes aside, i would definitely rate Dark Souls as one of my favorite games of 2011. I liked the way how you could choose your own route through the game, skip bosses entirely or even speedrun the game if you wanted. The big arsenal of weapons that actually played differently also was unlike most other action RPGs i'd played so far.

Blight town is meant to represent stagnation of Human development and progress, which is why the frame rate gets butt fucked down to single digits in the swamp. It symbolizes overcoming natural decay.
I've found that the reason for the framerate drops are mostly flying enemies chasing you through the terrain. If you regularly kill the mosquitoes you should have little to no framerate drops.

Another example of genius is the Tomb of the Giants, in which you travel through the dark, sacrificing a hand unless you have an item that takes 30 Humanity to get, falling off of cliffs time and time again because I giant skeleton archer you couldn't see shot you.
Actually there are several items you can get that provide light. The sunlight maggot is the hardest to get. The necromancers in the tomb and graveyard have a high droprate for their torch and even if you are unlucky there is another one you can get just past the first 2 giant skeletons in th pit patches throws you into.

Maybe in Vanilla Dark Souls it would have been more of an issue since the necromancers didnt drop anything.
