I would highly recommend getting a gamepad over just using the mouse fix. You can get a USB one for cheap enough.

The fact is the game was designed around the controller - the port was never originally planned so no thought was put into how well the controls would translate over to KB+M, so unfortunately there isn't much that can be done about that part of the problem.

I've heard that there are alternate key mappings that work better than the default that forgo using the mouse and put the camera controls on the keyboard - so you might try googling around for more information on that.

Other than that - I hate to say it but having a gamepad is really the ideal set up for Dark Souls. Its just the way the game was designed.

So what about people playing Skyrim on PC with a controller?
A controller shouldn't be mandatory for a FPS. Now Skyrim is not a FPS, but it uses the same principle: you are in first person and you shoot things (with a bow). Not only that, you can interact with objects and it would be nice to select those with a mouse (which you can, in this case). The mouse + keyboard controls are decent. The menu, however, is not.

Now fighting games (amongst others) is a completely different story. There are quite a few released on the PC, but even then you really still want to use a controller.

Basically it depends on the genre and gameplay.

The game with the high resolution mod and a 360 controller looks and plays beautifully. I'd go as far as to say it's the best time I've had on the PC this year.

I don't really know what to say to people who insist on never using a controller. Narrow taste in input devices is going to mean you can't play some games.

Hi guys,

I bought Dark Souls PTD edition today for the PC. I've played it for about twenty minutes and it makes me sick to the core I wasted my hard earned cash on this.

Now I'm sure the game is fantastic, and I'm very interested in continuing, BUT...

The game handles like ass. This is the problem with crappy PC ports. I don't mind a few console button indicators here and there because I can learn to work around them, but the mouse controls... Oh those mouse controls.

They make me want to puke my guts up every time I turn around. It's a painful experience trying to fight enemies purely because of the twitchiness with which the camera turns. It's spazzy, incredibly oversensitive and horrible to use.

Am I in the minority when it comes to this issue? I spent quite a lot of money on this game and I've been very interested in this series since the first installment, and I'm wondering if there is a fix for this so I can continue playing without getting a headache every time I try... Am I going to need to shell out for a 360 controller to use with my PC? :\
I also play on the PC, and yes you will need to shell out for a controller if you really want to get the enjoyment you payed for. That being said, once I got a controller I fell in love with the game (after the obligatory throwing and cursing required to get the ah-ha moment). I look forward to seeing you online m8.

I haven't shot a single bow in Skyrim. Anyway, a pad is not mandatory for Skyrim at all so I'm not sure where you're going with this comparison. It's not like we're even halfway to Quake-style aiming and movement, a controller is pretty ideal for first-person RPGs as it suits extended relaxing sessions far more than a desk.

More to the point, we're talking about a menu which caters to all personal preferences (which the above is, and is central to the PC experience; freedom of choice) so I'm not sure why you're saying there's absolutely no excuse to include a menu that allows people to play using a pad on PC.

Get yourself a gamepad (including a PS3 or 360 controller) and DS3 Tool so that you can play without handicapping yourself.

What it all comes down to is that devs are focusing too much on console development first and PC development second. Which usually means PC gamers end up with an crappy port or an inferior product. With Skyrim it ain't all that bad. Dark Souls, however, is a different story. But then again, better a crappy port than no port at all.

There is a fix for mouse/30fps unlock/better textures from Durante if you don't have a controller.

I played half of the game with M&K and the camera controls was going out of control, before buying a Xbox controller myself and found it way smoother to play.

If you don't have any other choice just get the mouse fix.

If the game makes you physically ill then don't play it. Sell it on eBay for $45 and buy Bastion for $20 and spend the $25 on dinner. Go out to the pub. Use the patches as suggested and play a game you enjoy. Bastion is a game you will enjoy.
Did you turn into some sort of walking Bastion ad, Smurf? That's all I'm seeing you say in the last few threads I visited... :D

OT- Throw a controller, add Durante's mod and whatever else to make it work the way you want.

...Done? Now you have the best experience of the game that can be had. Congratulate yourself very much and finish the game. It's the best I've seen in years.

Dark Souls is cheaper on PC. And the mods actually make it an insanely good product but if you just buy it and play without mods, it's a rather shoddy port which is framelocked to 30 and has a max of 1024x720 resolution.

And Smurf, as for your spambot captor(s), allow me to talk to him(them).

That'll free you and hopefully keep those guys away for the next hundred years. :-D. If not, may need to call the Daystar on this one...[sub]Something I want to avoid. It gets really messy. D-X[/sub]

Ah, all of you calling yourselves the "glorious PC gaming master race" well who has the upper hand now? I got Demon Souls for PS3 as well as an art book and special shit and you get wonky controls! Ha! Well, people who live in glass houses shouldn't get self righteous on forums...

OT: Sell your PC Dark Souls, buy a PS3 or 360, buy the Prepare to Die edition, ???, profit.

*Calls captors over*

*they look*

"I'll be back" - Captor 1

"get out, I drive now" - Captor 2

Well that worked, try imagine Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice to truly feel my fear.

You shouldn't be bragging about Demon's Souls swag unless you're one of the people who snagged the original Collector's Edition back when they didn't print enough copies.

Well you can fiddle the controls to your preference but even then its clunky and this game required good timing, not messing with controls.

Get a PS3 controler by the way, i find it works better than my XBOX controler for this game, feels nicer
yeah, i own an xbox, but i much prefer the Playstation controller build for this game. the R1 and L1 buttons are just so much more comfortable.
