perfect game would be an open world game with Demon's Souls combat engine which is what they apparently tried to do (I say apparently because I haven't gotten far enough to verify it) so I guess they have been watching me. Though I have heard Dark Souls has some serious frame-rate problems at times but I don't know about Rage if it has this problem on consoles..
It is very much open world when you get farther into you have many areas to go to and it is HUGE.

Also yeah, I agree it's got some bad frame-rate problems in certin areas. Blight Town is terrible when it comes to Frame-rate.

Dark Souls will give you a sense of reward as you complete each new challenge and get a little farther in the world, it can get frustrating as you constantly get killed over and over as you try to figure out the correct path. Also if you're into dark fantasy its a treat, I wouldn't say the game is difficult as its more of a trial and error type of thing, take your time study the task at hand and try different variations one will eventually work. Also EXPLORE every nook and cranny you see

Rage will give you cool weapons to decimate your enemies and vehicles battles that rival Twisted Metal or Mario Kart on steroids. The characters feel alive and are likable, the weapons are powerful, and upgrades are quite fun, but missions can get long, tedious, and boring with its "fetch" quest galore.

Overall I'm enjoying both games quite a lot but if I were to get one first I would go for Dark Souls ONLY because BF3, Uncharted 3, and MW3 are up on the horizon so there's more than enough run and gun games coming that I plan on getting. So to answer your question if you're getting any other FPS this year pass on Rage for now. If you're not get Rage first, its more forgiving
