Dark souls question

Okay, so this seems to be something that confuses a few people, so I'll leave this here for people to see.

Basically, a friend of mine said that if you're hollow, you can't get souls. This seems unlikely, I mean, dark souls is hard but dying once and then not being able to get souls until you happen across humanity? Hmm.

So, I set out to test this theory. I went to kill some skellintons whilst hollow(sp? it's been a while since I wrote that. I don't write that word enough) and I got nothing.

Problem is, I also got nothing when killing them as a normal, living human...

I guess skellintons don't have souls, anyway, seeming as I won't get an answer myself to this for quite some time, does anyone know if you can gain souls while hollow? And whilst at it, could anyone explain in full the benefits/drawbacks of hollowness/human-ness?

Yes you can gain souls while hollow. The human/hollow thing has more to do with the various pvp aspects than anything else (i.e. you can't summon a white phantom while hollow, only while human). Also, you need to be human to kindle a bonfire. There's more to it than that, but basically the answer is you can get souls while hollow.

skeletons and ghosts don't drop souls, except for certain, rarer types.

Also, copied from elsewhere:

1. Having humanity in the counter always increases drop rate. You can see your drop rate modifier if you look at your character menu window. However, compared to the gold ring, the amount it raises your drop rate is very small. It's better to use it for kindling before you die twice and it's gone.

2. The counter glows white when your in human form. It's the only way to tell your human while wearing heavy armor.

3. Being human greatly increases your resistance to curse!

4. You can only be invaded when you are human.

5. You can only summon help when you are human.

6. Some NPCs deal differently with you when you are human vs hollowed.

7. Just in case it isn't clear, you can have humanity in your counter and NOT be human. Being human/hollowed and humanity have only one link. That being said, you have to use 1 counter of humanity to become human at a bonfire.

Wait, are you fighting the skeletons in the Graveyard by the Firelink Shrine? Because you're going the wrong way, in that case.

Wait, are you fighting the skeletons in the Graveyard by the Firelink Shrine? Because you're going the wrong way, in that case.

Really? Huh. I mean, I knew things were hard in dark souls, but I did consider the huge monster skeleton acompanied by a sizable posse a little much for a character just starting off. I thought I was doing well, too. Oh well, at least I'm very accustomed to the combat system now, where was I supposed to go?

Really? Huh. I mean, I knew things were hard in dark souls, but I did consider the huge monster skeleton acompanied by a sizable posse a little much for a character just starting off. I thought I was doing well, too. Oh well, at least I'm very accustomed to the combat system now, where was I supposed to go?

Near the bonfire, there should be a path leading up the hill, it's kind of hard to see. It's just past the well. (Don't fall in the well, you'll die)

Well, that kinda seems to common advice for dark souls. Don't fall in the well, you'll die. Don't go in the graveyard, you'll die. Don't talk to that guy, you'll die. Don't look too long in that direction, you'll die.

Farm rats, strangely enough they have a higher chance of dropping humanity that most other creatures; and like the list said, you gradually gain humanity the longer you stay in human form without dieing.

And protip when you find the fire-keepers soul do not use it, keep it until you find the girl down the staircase from firelink shine they're used to increase healing done by estus flasks.
