According to his personal site he passed away after battling cancer for a year and a half.

Rest in peace, Ziggy Stardust.

I hadn't realized that he was battling cancer but...and this may sound odd to some folks...I'm glad he wasn't caught off guard and thus did see the end coming. I've home health cared loved ones and the ones who die suddenly from complications you didn't see coming are the hardest deaths to cope with.

I've listened to David Bowie since I was a kid back in the real old days. For some reason I tend to remember him most as the Goblin King from Labyrinth. I'd never noticed his deep baritone voice until that movie and it stuck with me. That and learning what an oubliette is. :)

Was that really him doing the tricks with the glass balls?

No, they had a guy semi-crouched while pressed up behind him and out of shot do that trick to create the illusion it was Bowe which sounds hilariously awkward and makes it much more impressive because the poor guy couldn't see what he was doing.

Really I thought they were using those momentum/inertia sparing trick balls for shots like that, because those sort of tricks are really easy with those balls. I have one a friend got me from an As Seen On TV section called "Fushigi Ball" and I can do the trick in the first gif with it.

OT: Rest in peace David Bowie, today the world mourns a legend.

Damn, heard the news this morning, I can't believe he's gone. Bowie is pretty big in my family, he's my parent's favourite musican and some of his songs have even inspired my writing. RIP Starman.

I saw a tweet by Miracle of Sound saying "Tried listening to 'Heroes' but couldn't get through it because too sad. Today sucks :("

First I wondered what he meant, and then I saw that "David Bowie" was trending...

Damn it, I even cried a bit.

Fuck.
You know it's bad news when you see that half your Facebook feed is filled with different Bowie songs.

Well, he had a good life and provided us with plenty of good songs. Still, he should've had plenty more years to enjoy his stay here; he didn't seem like the kind of person that was tired of living.

He planned his new album to release just before his death, and the intent of it is clear from the music. An artist even in death.

I saw the making of the movie and it showed how they did it.

Been listening to "Ziggy Stardust" in my car all day. Seems surreal to think he's no longer with us.

And Sirius XM Radio has been doing tributes throughout the day. Damn near started welling up at The Wallflowers version of "Heroes".

Bowie's music is like the atmosphere: it's been around so long you almost take it for granted...but you definitely notice when it's gone.

With the passing of David Bowie, the Stardust will be dimmer in the night sky. Bowie was one of the few musicians who not only had stage presence, but also had a presence on screen, in terms of Television and Movies. His talent will surely be missed.
