I do agree that being a hard ass is certainly a quick way to make yourself the target of criticism from both your employees and those around you. on the other hand, Stalin was one of the meanest bosses around, and he managed to turn Russia into a super power.

(Kelethor would like to note that he is in no way condoning the actions that Stalin took as the dictator of Russia, nor is he deeming these actions needed to help turn Russia out of its social and economic depression. )

I don't agree with Jaffe. If he overdoes it, he'll get the game developing equivalent of a fast food worker spitting in your food because you were an asshole.
That what his post said, but did your read it before posting? May that be a lesson: never take what someone you don't know says for gold.

I've known several very nice managers in places where we are doing great.
Yet, at some point they all had to come down onto a employee at some point. Being nice is one think, letting the job goes to hell is another.

So you worked for Blizzard? You've been there? How do you know? Are you 100% certain your source are true? No? Then why said that?

Yeah, being a jerk can take you far in life, but people will hate you and eventually want to plot your downfall. As soon as the people start working against you because you're an asshole, that's when you've gone too far.
Yeah, if your a jerk 24/7. The fact is that this thread use small bit of his blog without context sure make him look like a ass!

Welp(WELL) he's a dick. I got into steam and valve games because their customers prior talked about how good a developer they were and how awesome the sails and pricing was. So because valve was NICE they attracted customers. Likewise I refuse to buy the next game this guy ever makes because he's a dick.
Wow! Just how much to show that picking something out of context can make the masses act like bots. I read all that his post and if he said he's mean when needed, that ok. Like people said, shit need to get done.
YOU might need someone to stick a cattle prod up your ass to work hard, but as for me, and the people I know, we work harder in our classes when our teacher is reasonable and appreciative, rather than a hard ass.

There is a big difference between being an asshole and being strict.
Like i said, Human nature is are to be lazy. What are you doing right now? Can you make something more constructive of your time?
Of course I can, but I deserve free time, that is hardly the point here, nor is the point that human nature is to be lazy.

The point is that you get better results by being kind yet strict, than being an asshole, that has nothing to do with how human beings are naturally lazy, it's about how being an asshole is not the best method to foster productivity. Your post was aiming to prove something that is completely irrelevant.

Also, when you first quoted me, you said "did you even read his post" I was the first commenter, and I didn't quote anybody, I was voicing my opinion, so what the hell were you talking about?

Look, I can attempt to prove something totally irrelevant and pretend it makes me right too:

Exactly like I said, the sky is big, try to wrap your arms around the whole sky, can you do it? Nope. See, I'm right about David Jaffe because of that!

(See how useless and annoying that is?)
My point is: that's what Jaffe said! And by judging in on the bit you read here isn't enough to get the full picture. Look at my other post. I paste the full jaffe's blog. You'll see that he doesn't say BE A JERK 24/7 like that news post seem to have written. Also, HUMAN ARE REALLY LASY... that not a irrelevant point. You have to push sometime to get result. That's a fact. What is irrelevant is the fact that you call me on it being lazy and i call you workaholic. Why? because i don't make a point that i don't need to make, i let others do it for me.

BOTTOM LINE: Read Jaffe's Blog, because you can't judge something on a single phrase and than reread your first post. Like i said, i hate when news take the worst out of someone to boost interest. I want Truth!

Well, there's a difference between being nice and letting people walk all over you, and there's also a difference between being an asshole and not taking a half-ass or poorly done job. Admittedly I think it's a fine line to walk and not a lot of people manage to do it correctly, but there's not much that can be done about that.
Also, I know I may be nitpicking, but I'm pretty sure the article meant that being nice is overrated, not underrated. If being nice was underrated, than the article would have been saying to try being nice more, not less.

Read the blog people, Tom Goldman took his words out of context to make him sound like a jerk. Shame on you Goldman, I trusted you dude!

Honestly if you want to be competitive in any market you have to be a fucking dick. It doesn't matter if its employees, competitors, or even some customers there is a point when you gotta say enough is enough or get the fuck out.

Of course that doesn't mean we have to like or agree with them, but that's why they are successful so i don't think they give a shit.

He's not. Look under your first post. There's the full transcript of Jaffe's blog. What the Escapist News network and what the Blog said is polar opposite.

Read the blog, I argued with Danpascooch about it until i quoted the blog. He readed it and change his mind. You should too.

Also, shame on Escapist News Netwook for just quoting bad aspect and not all that he said.

Being a jerk and giving people a stern talking to when needed are two completely different things. If you can do the second without doing the first, you're on the right track.
Basically this. This is why group leaders exist: the manager is the person to be feared, and the group leaders are the ones that encourage you and are allowed to be nice to you.

Being a jerk and giving people a stern talking to when needed are two completely different things. If you can do the second without doing the first, you're on the right track.
Basically this. This is why group leaders exist: the manager is the person to be feared, and the group leaders are the ones that encourage you and are allowed to be nice to you.
You are right in general... but not this time. Read his(Jaffe) post, he don't want to be a jerk but does it when needed. What the escapist slander party didn't mention is this line from Jaffe:"Can I still be nice? Always. But not at the expensive of the game's vision."

I apologize, when I said fear, I meant, you fear to disappoint the manager. You cannot do that if you do not respect the manager.

Ok, than. I've been working hard to make people realize that what the escapist isn't 100% true. I Misinterpreted your post.

Jaffe is just like my current boss, and guess what? We dominate all of the competition.
Jaffe shall always be my hero for proving that being a jerk can get you far in life.
while leaving a trail of hate
No, he isn't. For Jaffe's blog that you didn't read:"Can I still be nice? Always. But not at the expensive of the game's vision."

Edit: He would be the guy that make you work hard but at the end of the day will invite you to a bar for a nice refreshing beer!
yeah, but that's not being a jerk. You can be nice AND stern. Jaffe's version of the word "nice" is equivalent with "submissive" and you can be nice without being submissive.

I see... We'll that one way to do it. But when you hold the rein on a project involving multiple individual, doesn't you need to work harder to make them stay on your path?
