Evening all.
Just a quick one to get a general idea of the opinions of the wider community here.

I've just been scanning around the internet to find a bit more information about DoW2: Retribution, as I've pre-ordered and pre-loaded on Steam and wanted to know what I've just spent £29 on.

I came across the official website, which stated that the characters for the Space Marines faction would include old favourites Sergeant Cyrus and Techmarine Martellus, as well as ex-opponent Captain Diomedes and an entirely new Sergeant character.
Naturally, I was thrilled at the return of Cyrus and Martellus - partially because I'm a massive fan of Steve Blum - because Cyrus was, by a long country mile, my favourite character in Dow2 and DoW2: Chaos Rising. Cyrus, aside from being useful in any given mission type in terms of gameplay, was (in my opinion) the least wooden of the characters the player had to associate with on a regular basis. He was also indescribably badass - I mean, whilst the other characters act all noble and honourable, chanting litanies of prayer as they wade into combat, you can genuinely imagine Cyrus standing in front of a charging carnifex, arms folded, saying "Challenge accepted".

Just wondering if there were any particular sergeants anyone would have preferred a return from instead of Cyrus? Or none whatsoever - to have worked with an entirely new character set?

The one other option of course would have been to bring back ALL the sergeants from DoW2 and Chaos Rising. Whilst it might get a bit old pretty quickly, especially in the face of three other brand new single player campaigns, there may have been some merit to bringing them all back - as this is (according to marketing) the final chapter in the defence of the Aurelian sector, it might have been nice to see the same force who'd fought for it in two previous games see the war through to it's final conclusion. There's also the characterisation aspect to consider - the sergeants all (despite being acted a bit badly in some areas) had a different personality that worked well in the group; Avitus, the grumpy bastard, had a tendency to rile the brash, quick-to-anger Thaddeus, whilst the cynical Cyrus stood in the corner being sarcastic before the cool-headed Tarkus reined them in. Once Davian joined the team, he tended to just lurk around offering advice. In Chaos Rising, he took Tarkus' place as the level-headed character as Tarkus had to have a few chaos-influenced moments.
It did really work as a setpiece and, as I said it might have been nice to have the same set of marines finish off the war they'd seen the start of twelve years previously.

But hey ho - decisions are made for a reason.

So - what's eveyone's opinion?
Relic have got it right?
A different character should have been ressurected?
No characters should have been brought back?
Or they should have used the same squad from the previous games?

Cheers guys! :)

Meh, I didn't really care much for the characters except Thaddeus and Cyrus.

I guess changing things up a bit is better than going with the same old stuff.

Fair enough.

Like I said, I can get used to it - I don't mind either way, but I think it would have been nice to keep the characters the same. I mean, with new Eldar, Ork, Chaos and Guard characters there's enough of those going to be bouncing around already.

Relic dropped the ball with Retribution. Well, that may be a bit harsh, but consider the following...

- DOW2: Retri was hyped as bringing back multi-faction campaigns. Yet the campaign is identical no matter which race you choose, the only thing that differs is some of the conversation.

- They've totally vetoed any/all choices you've made in the previous DOW2 games, effectively retconning the story. It matters none who the traitor was in Chaos Rising, nor if your Commander became tainted. It matters just as little if you've let Diomedes live or die.

- Some characters got completely re-written. Diomedes went from a loyal yet proud Honour Guard Captain to a pompous, stick-up-the-arse bully with more ego than sense. Just listen to some of his yells while charging into battle.

All in all the game is fun. A lot of fun! But the aforementioned issues are quite crippling to those of us who like the actual fluff behind the W40K universe ( see what I did there?! ).

Long offtopic ramble about how I dislike steam achievements and have stopped me from getting the game:

I'm too disappointed that Relic chose to ditch GFWL. I've spent months waiting for this game since I saw the trailer and now when trying to look up the achievement list I saw it said "steam achievements" and went "WHAT?".

I thought that with this game coming out it might encourage people to play last stand/co-op on the original 2 campaigns but they've effectively split their player base. Now rather than the increased number of people I was expecting to be playing there will actually be a decreased number of people.

I would have still picked up the game if it didn't have achievements at all but steam ones make me feel...cheap? I'm also obsessive enough that I'll need to get all the achievements and steam achievements are worthless to me compared to Microsoft ones that I compete with my real friends to get.

OT: Hated Martellus and the librarian loved all the other squad sergeants and they seemed to have a good dynamic going surprised they didn't bring them back.

Dark Crusade let you choose which path you were gonna take in order to achieve conquest, so while still linear, it at least let you imagine you were doing something different. Sadly, Retribution doesn't even do that - best you could do is not play the Optional missions...but that's hardly a solution.

No, they got everyone I wanted...I mean, they added Sergeant Merrick, for God's sake! Of course, that means either Thaddeus or Avitus was the traitor, which I find hilarious.

Wait, I thought Relic was releasing 6 different campaigns for 6 different factions on 6 different games, or do you play as the space marines in each of them and you can pick who you will fight against. Someone explain please.

Oh yeah, Avitus was my absolute favourite, when I played co-op with my brother, I always made sure he was mine. That hench lascannon in Chaos Rising was awesome.

Well, frankly I was AMAZINGLY happy that they brought back...

Tarkus, call me stupid but I did not expect him to be The Ancient.

It was interesting that if Chaos Rising actually bared any relevance on Retribution, then the traitor would have had to have been Thaddeus or Avitus. Frankly I'd imagine it was Thaddeus, as he was the most reckless of the group and had the least experience, I'd be very surprised if it turned out to be Avitus.

But anyway, I haven't finished the game yet, I'm going through the SM campaign and I plan on doing either the Chaos run or Eldar afterwards but I'm not in the least disappointed by Ret, I think it's a fantastic finale to the DoW2 series thus far and it's brilliantly done.

I'm glad they haven't rehashed ALL of the same squad-mates from DoW2, but they might have overdone it a little bit, a new character or two wouldn't have gone amiss, but with the campaigns added for new races too I suppose there's plenty of choice for those that get bored of the Marines.

Just a shame there appears to be no *real* difference in the campaigns beyond dialogue, but the multiplayer's a blast too.

I am impartial to the Space Marines. I got Retribution mainly for the Imperial Guard.

Shoulda let me import my game. That way no 2 people would have the same game in Ret cause of the choices and traitor factor.

Your race did affect how you played the game as it altered your proximity to other races and to 'global bonus' territories, not just your play style.
What race you chose had an actual effect on the campaign.

According to a certain speech that occurs later in the game, Avitus was the traitor.
Right around the part your spoiler happens the speech is made.

How about Gorgutz 'ead Hunter? one of the best characters in DoW as far as I'm concerned.

Gorgutz makes no return.

The only returning characters are Marrick, Eliphas, Diomedes, Cyrus and Martellus... and one other.

Davian Thule appears in the first level of one of the campaigns, but not as a playable character.

Gabriel Angelos and Jonah Orion make a return - and this isn't a spoiler as if you play the prologue mission you actually play as those two. You don't get to use them in any of the actual campaigns though.

If there are more that aren't cameo appearences I can't recall.

Well if you ever get the chance to listen to it again you'll pick it up.

Avitus isn't mentioned by name, but if you listen to what he describes it makes sense.

"Always have yer tunnels dug 'n ready!"

Even as I watched the giant green armoured blob disappear into the distance after unavoidably losing dozens of my Fire Warriors to the alien bastard I still smiled.
