So, steam is offering a free go at the DoW2 beta. Awsome.
Just downloaded it, somewhat hyped as this is a game I had every intention of buying, even though I'd heard it was using "games for windows live", I'd also heard it had been fixed and would let me play lan games or host my own online games with friends. Based on the BETA, I was wrong.

There is no option for a skirmish or a lan game, however it is a beta so it's unfair to ***** about that too much if they intend to include it in the full realese.

However, it requires me to log in with my windows live ID. Shouldn't be an issue, right?
I have one coupled with my Xbox live silver membership, I've never really used it, but it is there. Apparently microsoft have decided to brick wall the game to Australians, as windows live, even though it instantly detects my password when I input my email, is unable to sign in. It suggests that windows live is not avaliable yet in my country....

Is anyone else having this issue, and if so, does anyone know how to fix it?

I'll be back with an edit if I get it working.
*edit* apparently windows live refuses to work with xfire, issue resolved (although it is gay).

Hold on a sec... Dow2 is going "Games for Windows Live"?

1 - Does that mean it's going to require Vista?
2 - Does that mean I have to have a Live account?
3 - If yes to #2, does such an account cost money?
4 - If yest to any above, are they trying to drive away potential buyers, or were they just beaned in the head with the eTard stick?
1. No, just another user name and password to go on the pile.
2. Yes, even if for offline play.
3. No, there is no subscription fee for a PC LIVE account (that I'm aware of.)
4. Microsoft wants to be your all-in-one, your one-stop-shop, your wallet's best buddy. This mandatory bundling is the "Hard Sell."

"I will make them an offer they cannot refuse." "Put a horse's head under their bedsheets?" "Or Windows LIVE in their favoured new releases, do we have enough horse heads?" "Not enough for projected sales, sir." "Drat! Oh well, Windows LIVE it is..."

I so hope there is already Games for Windows option in Poland. I checked in Summer, it wasn't :/

Way to support piracy, Microsoft. And any developer that puts GoWL shit in his game.

I'm gonna d/l the beta in a couple days, but I understand you can do skirmish by setting your opponent as the AI.

I've been playing the beta since it became available to Soulstorm owners. I live in Australia. Games for Windows live is not a great service, it's not even close, but it's not spawned the great evil to torment us as some would like you to think either.

I would have been happier if DOW2 was not a GFWL game, but I'll put up with it because it's a lot of fun and is not completely cripped by it. Just a little bit.

I'm not sure why the OP can't play it. I had no touble at all. Just the occasional drop out when GFWL signs me out for no decernable reason. That my biggest problem with it. That is really frustrating.

Yes. I'll bet Khell_Sennet has, too.
But by all means let's be clear.

Khell, Ph3onix wants you to know there most likely will be at some point a third party patch which bypasses the Windows Live elements of DoW2. Nobody here would do such a dastardly thing as break their EULA, but there you go.

Phew, bullet dodged, eh Ph3onix? :)

No IG and now this. DOW2 is looking grimmer and grimmer.
Have you played the Demo?

Playing DoWII is like teabagging a belt sander.
If that's the case I must be some kind of perverted freak because I love it so far.
It's not going to be for everyone. RTS purists are going to hate it. It's a little bit simplistic, but I still love it. I am pretty biased though, being a total 40k fanatic.

I can understand how people can hate it, but can't wait for the retail release.

Well, my desire to try out DoW2 beta exposed me to two things I've managed to avoid till now: Steam and LIVE.

On one hand, Steam was very cooperative. The links to download the software were easy to find, the entire thing went very fast and the dowload of the DoW2 client was fast and smooth. I try to start the game and get greeted with an error message. A quick google of it reveals that it's a problem with LIVE software, which brings me to my next point.

My experience with LIVE is the opposite of my experience with Steam. I made a new account, but then got forwarded to the X-Box LIVE site, even though I started from the GfW-LIVE page. I just hope it's one account for both... The error I got had to do with the LIVE's Redistributable software. I have it installed, but apparently it's not the right version. The LIVE homepage refused to provide me with a download link or any kind of info on the subject. Heck, it refused to provide me with a download link for the DoW2 client earlier, instead trying to get me to buy the game if I just as much as looked at the words "Dawn of War 2" anywhere on the page. A few google searches later I managed to ascertain which Redistributable version is the latest and download it.

Besides the software installation, it also insisted on installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0. This has been installing for the past 20 minutes, and I'm starting to get a bit worried. It was a 30MB file, so there's not that much in it, but the progress bar just starts over again whenever it finishes...

.NET takes a long time to install

I personally like the beta and has preordered the game. It is possible to create battles against the computer: Host a game and make the opponents into computers. Battles like these will not go into your player profile and you will not get higher ranks, only multiplayers games will do that.

LIVE can be quite uncooperative but so far I haven't had any serious problems.

Is it possible to get my hands on DOW2 without Live, but with a legally obtained copy of soulstorm?

You CAN play skirmish games.. just its a bit of a long road to reach it.
1st.host a public game
2nd. fill all the spots with computer players
3rd. start the game
4th. ?
5th. Profit.

And there you have it, your very own skirmish money making procedure. Glad to be of service good sir.

But back to the more serious topic of Microsoft live. *puts on serious glasses* First, Microsoft live is a faulty product. I just can't say that enough. IT has connectivity issues in games, and is no where near as use friendly as steam. I am mostly going to attribute this to the fact that it is designed for use with the Xbox. I wouldn't have a problem with that if Microsoft were content to keep their crappy game operating system too the Xbox, where it belongs. Unfortunately their desire to try and get their grubby paws in on everything in this day and age has lead them to metaphorically defecate all over this better.

What is wrong with Microsoft live?
Its counter intuitive. I appreciate that the console screen can be called down with one single button, but while for steam all i need to do is right click to get all the possible desired options available in Microsoft live you need to navigate several menus just do join a friends game. Where i ask you, is the ease in that?

Its buggy, i can't count the number of times me and my friends had trouble; just today alone, with Microsoft live forcing us out of a game because apparently there was another instance of live running.

Its childish. Again I think this is because it is designed for the xbox and not the PC, but everything from the bright colors too the horrible sound effects remind me of children, childhood, and generally being young. Not the atmosphere I am looking for. I'll stick with the sleek black and white of steam any day.

And that's my 2; well, more like 4 cents.

Okay, can I swear now? Now? Okay, don't open the tag if you don't want to see it.

FUCKED SHIT FUCKED MOTHERFUCKING WINDOWS LIVE!!

Thanks to that piece of shit I can't play any Games for Windows games because those idiots don't allow Polish players here. Why the hell should we even care about buying those games? With pirated copies we can do EVERYTHING we could do with original games. Even more - I don't have to log in to that piece of crap called Windows Live!

I'll try to get a proxy so that fucked shit will see me as UK or USA citizen. If it won't, they lost my $50.
