I didn't really enjoy it after loving the first one. The change in scale was a neat idea and I know some people love it, but it wasn't for me.

I prefer the original DoW, you can get all 4 as a pack pretty cheap. Also there are mods that let you play as inquisition daemonhunters, steel legion, weeaboo sororitas and finally firestorm over kronus which makes everything virtually codex correct.

DoWII campaign was actually quite entertaining even if I did miss the base building and controlling a whole army. Chaos rising was more of the same. In these 2 you can only play as marines in campaign

Retribution I felt was the worst of the entire series, 1 or 2. It is the only one (of the DoWII games) where you can play as other races in campaign, however the campaign mode is woeful, it loses all the things that made DoWII's campaign interesting and to make it worse every faction has the same campaign. It's basically an additional race for multiplayer.

I never played the original Dawn of war and wasnt really into 40k till I played Space marine. That all said if you like RTS games DoW2 is certainly worth a look. Depending on where you look you can get it for $20-30, maybe less if theres a sale. The expansion packs also expand the game quite a bit brining in new units for each race and a new race which translates into new tactics.

As an RTS game I like it more then I like Starcraft 2 because it feels smoother and seems to have more life in it.

The singleplayer isnt so much RTS a lot of the time though but most people think its pretty average and there tends to be smaller camps that think its bad/good. Im personally in the above average camp. Its not amazing but its still fun

Overall if you can find it for 20, maybe even as low as 40 I would go ahead and grab it. You can certainly do worse for those prices

It's not a bad game but my word of advice would be that if you're looking for another Dawn of War this isn't really it. Dawn of War II resembles much less of an RTS and more of a dungeon crawler.
This.

Dawn of War II is nothing like the first game and its expansions. You travel around a map with a small number of heroes, each hero has a small squad of Astartes backing him up. You get wargear as mission rewards and sometimes find it as loot in a mission or get awarded some for completing certain tasks or scripted events.

Your heroes earn experience points and when you level up you spend points on skills. Skills do pretty much what you expect, you can make each hero tougher or give them new abilities or do more damage with melee weapons or firearms. The wargear and skills allow you to customise each hero and the battlegroup as a whole and make it suit a preferred tactic or playstyle

There is a lot of variation, you can go for loads of ranged firepower or you can use stealth and booby traps to wipe out whole squads or totally avoid them. There are only five squads available and apart from a Dreadnought you cant use vehicles in the campaign.

The story is ok, not great but its solid enough.

Chaos Rising though is IMO much, much better. You have more heroes to choose from including a Librarian which gives loads of choice when you build your team. The story is also better and it has a great corruption mechanic which means your heroes can fall to Chaos, either individually or as a group. Corruption happens in a variety of ways and is different to the more usual moral choices you get in games, using tainted wargear or failing objectives are some of the ways to get corrupted. Falling to Chaos unlocks new skills and powers and access to powerful tainted wargear, so its actually a real choice instead of a simple lightside/darkside meter or something. The interactions between heroes, the story as a whole and the ending all reflect how corrupted your heroes are.

Its worth getting Dawn of War II just so you can play Chaos Rising, if you are a 40k fan CR is a must have.

if your looking for an RTS where your goals are
1) build base that not even Super man could get into
2) build an army that would win a land war with china
3) march said army from one side of the map to there other and hope the important thing dies along the way

you my wanna keep looking. Dawn of War 2 (all its expansions) are more about controlling small squads, you only get to field so many units at a time, so you need to be even more picky about what you field, you'll also need to manage their war gear, but that's not so bad.

personally, i like DoW2 game play tone over more standard RTS games, taking down a heavily fortified area with only a hand full of troops is far more satisfying then steam rolling the map

Retribution or get old DOW 1: Original + winter assault + dark crusade expansion packs. It's cheap and it's good. Maybe include Soulstorm if you want Sisters of battle and dark elder factions also.

Winter assault has the best SP campaigns by far.
Dark crusade and soul storm let you play as any faction in the campaign mode, but the campaigns are basicly just skirmish maps on an overal map, with very few special missions or story, but even the skirmishing is good.
Winter Assault was just brutal...

I love RTS, Im just shit at it, and the winter assault campaign was painful for me to play, it was just so fucking hard.

I enjoyed Dark Crusade, never got around to playing Soulstorm.

Got them all in a THQ pack a while ago.
I loved the Winter Assault Campaign for its challenge. The latter 3 IMperial Guard levels were some of the most fun I've ever played. The desperate defense against the Ork tide while your lines crumble, just to be rescued by the Baneblade was awesome.

I just finished playing Soulstorm, and I have to say Force Commander Boreale has one of the worse dialogues ever.

Dawn of War 2 is focused on small squads and micromanaging them. Things like cover[light, medium, heavy], suppression and moral are all taken into account. Cover can also be blown up. Lost your cover? No problem! Just use the crater! I personally prefer it to games like Starcraft.
Actually morale isn't featured in DoW II.

However, DoW II did add energy when using abilities, along with the global abilities.

Don't forget losing 5 companies of Blood Ravens to Vance Motherf**king Stubbs!
-And oh god, you got me searching back in the Boreale parodies section of youtube-I should be studying -,-

OT: DoWII plays a lot like Company of Heroes (Or at least that's what I've determined from the demo I played) that is tactical squad based style of individual units emphasizing their strengths and weaknesses against all the other units of the 40k Universe--excluding the Necrons, Tau, Dark Eldar, and Agents of the Imperium (Per se-guard gets Witch Hunter).
Overall, its a good game; the Campaigns for the first two are Blood Raven central, with a mission based deployment system versus Orks, Chaos, Eldar, and 'Nids, with Retribution offering multiple campaigns (of the same exact path) with the different races.
It's all on your perspective of play--nothing like Dawn of War 1.

I liked it, especially Chaos Rising which had a genuinely fantastic campaign and added Chaos as a playable faction for multiplayer. As others have said though if you're looking for a more standard rts experience the first DOW game is much more typical in that regard. For better or for worse (I say better, though others disagree) Dawn of War 2 takes a more small scale and tactical approach to combat as opposed to the more tried and true formula of most rts.

DoW II is fun enough.

But the whole meat-grinder experience that is WH40K suits DoW I better. Nothin' better than setting up a murderous bottleneck covered by entrenched heavy bolters, autocannons, and anti-vehicle turrets.

Also, the voices are more fun. Many will be familiar with the Chaos Heretic gal meme ("Hwee cap-toored eet for Cha-OSSS").

Oooh ooh -- if you're a DoW I player; you *must* check out Firestorm Over Kaurava mod. Makes the game play much closer to the tabletop; including reworking all stats, victory conditions, etc.

I may have this backwards, but I think the latest incarnation is called Firestorm over Kronus, as it's for Dark Crusade rather than Soulstorm I think they changed the name to make it clearer.

Anyway, get it here anyone who hasn't:

If you want Warhammer 40k content then get DoW 1 plus expansions, don't get Soulstorm because it is absolute piss.

If you are still spoiling for more after those DoW 2 plus expansions will be fine but the content got very thin, you spend most of your time on rinse and repeat missions, leveling up and items add some extra feel but with the single weapon per squad limit and only 4 squads at a time it is very limited.
Retribution does give you a selection of 6 races but you just play the exact same campaign over and over again, like I said very thin content.
