I do think it's funny.

They kept saying "We have no plans! We'll release it when we release it! Stop Asking!"

Then BAM! There is it. No warning, no fanfare. Just there.

Odd marketing choice there.... o_O
I would really love it if Valve did that with Half Life 3, just stick it up on the main store in Steam, no reviews, no adverts, no publicity, and watch as the entire videogame industry craps itself, imagine all the rumours creeping their way around the internet, all the magazines and websites going mad, clamouring to get information about the game, all the reviewers busting their nuts to buy and play the game, and then give an objective review as soon as possible because the game was currently on sale, and imagine Gabe and the team taking the day off to hook up a couple dozen monitors and sit in front of them, constantly refreshing the pages to watch the ripples of insanity pass from website to website, forum to forum. "It's here! It's arrived"

They would have the entire videogame reviewing industry in the palm of their hands for that one day. Glorious.

the no fanfare thing is kinda funny to me. I would have assumed something would show up for quakecon. Also, PS3 players may not even see the expansion. They aren't happy at all with it's performance on the platform.

I'd love to see them do that just to watch all the bullshit "game journalism" folks (which is a lot of them) squirm and flail about in an attempt to figure out what to do with a major game release they haven't been able to hype up or spoonfeed people scraps of information about. There's a distinct possibility it would make them look like idiots (well, bigger idiots) which would be awesome.

Wait, what? When did this happen???? I have been playing Skyrim for most of the day, and I saw nothing. Hmmm... Those sneaky folks at Bethesda never cease to shock.

That being said, I don't think I will pick it up immediately. I will wait for the price to drop, and I think I will wait out of spite since they had originally states that ther, "Were not plans for a PC release."

Happy days, with today's 50% off of vanilla Skyrim I bought the whole bundle for less than the old price of the game. Always knew this day would come.

I'm gonna get it but damn that was surprising.
I came onto the escapist just to create this thread and it was already here.

I guess Bethesda's marketing is like the guy who pretends to forget his wife's birthday, just so he completely surprise. A high risk, but high rewards if done right.
And now you win the internetz.

I don't like playing Skyrim in the summer. It's a game best played in the winter IMO.
Yes, strangely I find this to be the case with myself as well. I wonder if it's of the same mentality of staying warm inside while the cold is outside and curling up with a good, long book that you've been meaning to read. Those long open-ended games just feel that much sweeter on those cold winter days for some reason...

Anyway, in regards to everything wrong with this abhorrent business practice of different console release dates for DLC that Bethesda has adopted, I would like to especially point out the overpriced--

*Steam has now finished downloading and installing the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Dawngard*

Maybe it has no fanfare because the PC version has loads of mods that have ALREADY ADDED the new game play to the world?

Apparently, for Bethesda "No Calendar" means the next fuckin week.

It's like reverse valve time.

I played the Xbox version and IMO its just not a worth $20. $15 maybe, $10 sure but not $20. Short (6-7 hours) and forgettable story, conflicting themes regarding vampires (and/or outright abandonment of their folklore), and several hard to like NPCs.

The good parts are the vampire lord form, crossbows, a couple interesting NPCs, Fort dawnguard (its a great place to sell/craft), and the werewolf perk tree. Thats about it so I just dont think the value is there

Its nice to hear its finally on PC though

$20 really beth? $15 I would be fine with but $20 seems like it is pushing it. Plus I am not really in the mood for Skyrim after getting Borderlands. Dawnguard can wait.

Huh.

So if I ask Bethesda when they're releasing Fallout 4, and they say "We haven't even though about it yet" what they mean is... it's releasing tonight.

I need to make a call.

The surprise you feel at the PC release is only equaled by my lack of surprise that PS3 yet again gets nothing as of yet. You would think that to program for it required shoving a cactus leave up your urethra sideways while reciting the complete unabridged oxford english dictionary translated into the Ainu language...

I mean just judging from how self-admittedly incompetent at it they are after at least 3 games and about 10 years developing on it.
I just wanted to note that that was the best thing ever written. Carry on, good sir/madam. Carry on.

Considering I paid £20 for Skyrim on it's own for 100 hours of play, is it worth it? Will I get an extra 75 hours out of it?
There's no way you'll get that much play time out of it. I guess if I were you I would wait until it goes on sale or get the GOTY, but it's worth getting. Of course if you go for the latter option you will be waiting a while.

AU$25 for DLC?
*Fixed your image*

I basically feel the same. AU$25 is too much for some DLC quest. All the other things Dawnguard adds to the game, like crossbows or arrow crafting, can be added in for free with all the mods available on the Steam Workshop.

What I find interesting is that while Dawnguard has seen a price rise for us in Australia, Skyrim has had it's ""Australian Tax" removed. If you look on Steam, Skyrim is 50% off, but it's 50% from $60, not the $80-$90 it use to be.

no, no you will not. It is one new story-line like the guild lines, and a few sidequests. And of course new powers and at least one new weapon type. But you won't spend 75 extra hours.

I actually spent about half the time playing dawnguard on 'old' content :p (because i tend to get sidetracked by ooh looky a dungeon)
