why do people care about day one dlc so much. All it is is an incentive to buy a game new nothing more. It's not like there cutting the game in two it dosen't really take that much away so i dont understand why people get so fired up about it.

The perception is that developers and publishers are removing parts of the game then selling them back to the customer in order to squeeze a bit of extra money out of us.

I'm not entirely opposed to the practice, and I think there's definitely some entitlement issues at work, but I can see why it annoys people.

the reason I get so upset about day 1 DLC is because it's obvious that they left out certain content from the game specifically to sell it as DLC for more money.

DLC is basically 'extra' content, a way for you to expand on the original game if you enjoyed it and a way to extend the title's lifespan. When DLC is done like this I'm all for it, however when DLC is released the first day, chances are the developer created the game and then hacked off some of the content and charged extra for it, so istead of getting the 100% of the game they developed you're really only getting 90% of what they developed unless you pay them again.

Except it isn't in a lot of cases. A lot of day 1 DLC is created once the game has been finished and the packaging is being done. I'd personally rather have the developers actually create new content while this period of time is passing as opposed to them sitting on their hands, but that's just me.
Of course, in some cases, they do just cut out content, but that normally isn't the case.

because if it's released on day 1 then it could quite easily have been included on the disc you just paid £50 for, now you have to immediately shell over more money for it.

Kind of like buying a car new then the car company says ok you have the car but now you have to pay extra for the tyres. Not exactly the same as you can play the game without the DLC but I think it's a bit underhand!

I think its fine. The used market is harmful to the video game industry, so they reserve a right to compete against them in a good ol' Capitalist manner (unless I somehow got teleported to some bizarre alternate reality where the USSR won the Cold War). I've written a lot on this site defending the industry for its attacks against the used market. If you are curious, look up my post history... I'd hate to sound like a broken record and repeat the same thing a million times.

If you like video games, then buy new. Support the industry and let the developers know you like their game.

So you expect a used car to work perfectly, just like if you bought it new? You except that new stove to be in perfect, flawless condition, just like you bought it new?

There isn't anything wrong with buying used, but there are consequences to it. If you want to buy used, then you have to weigh these consequences with the benefits. It's outright entitled and spoiled to think you should get everything someone who bought the game new should.

I always look at it like this, using the epic game Resident Evil 4 as my assistant:

2005 - Resident Evil 4: Complete the game and earn extra costumes, weapons and even game modes!
2011 - Any game: Developers remove content so that people have to buy it as DLC

Seriously, the gaming industry is corrupted these days.

My question is, where is the rage for preorder bonuses?

I mean they totally cut out chunks of content to dupe people into buying the game before it is even released rite, So seriously wheres the rage?

I actually support day 1 DLC. If you accept that DLC is acceptable, then having DLC available immediately is also logical.

So do we have to push the Day 1 DLC back a couple of weeks so people wont rage over it, or how about having a subsidiary studio make the initial DLC release so it doesnt feel like its content cut out of the game. Or perhaps just take whatever the preorder bonus is, and make that your Day 1 DLC. Yeeesh.

Seriously, theres far more important things that are massively wrong with the industry than day 1 dlc.

Name one other media form that is affected by this.

One.

It's not entitlement, it's basic consumer rights. At least when you've bought a £30 stove, you'll be able to complain/get a refund when it doesn't work properly.
How do you have any rights in the eyes of the publisher and developer? You didn't buy the product from them... you aren't their customer. You aren't a consumer in their eyes. Why should THEY give a shit about you? You aren't given them any money or helping fund. That's where your analogy fails: you get the right to complain, but you complain to the second hand store you bought it from... NOT from Kenmore or the original manufacturer of the stove. Same rules for video games.

Now tell me... why should publishers care about you? What do they owe you? NOTHING. You are being ENTITLED. You are expecting these publishers to cater to you and meet your demands when you aren't even their customer.

EDIT: What? You aren't going to buy their games? If you buy used, publishers already aren't getting any of your money, so how will that change anything?

what some people don't understand is that a lot of day one dlc dose not raise the base price of the game that it comes with also people have to understand that a game in pre and post production makes no moeny for the devlopers they are out all of that money intell they sell there game and games arnt cheep to make it cost a lot of moeny

Can I just chip this in to the discussion and tell you where retailers stand? Granted its almost a year old but nonetheless it should tell you what retailers really are. Retailers can pull shit like this if the developers/publishers decides to sell their whole game online. Both publishers and retailers are equally evil, but retailers control what goes on the shelf. Devs and consumers are being tied down by the two bitches that wants a bigger portion of the money pie.

Generally day 1 DLC exists because a developer finishes a game, ships it off for disk production and distribution, then begins work on DLC. If that DLC is complete before the game is released, it can become the dreaded day 1 DLC.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with it unless the developer deliberately removed a part of the game and then sold it separately, which I have seen no proof of ever happening.
