I searched around the forums a bit, and checked news posts, but surprisingly this wasn't a news article.

The mod is DayZ and it's a persistent world survival horror mod with zombies. It's for ArmA II Combined Operations, and it's really some of the most fun I've had gaming in a while.

It's still in the "Alpha" stage and it does run off the ArmA II engine- but I really urge all of you PC gamers to come try it out. Become a bandit today! No- wait, become a survivor today.

As much as I love Arma2. I really can't get very excited about YET another zombie mod/game. At this point Zombie games are worse than zombies, they just won't die!!!!

I've heard about this, but honestly the whole "one life only" thing kinda turns me off.

It's not one life forever, you can respawn as a new one.

OT: Yeah I saw this on PCgamer about a week ago. Looks pretty good, but I don't have Arma 2.

This game went from a relatively obscure hardcore milsim to #1 in Steam's top sellers after bouncing between 9th and 5th for a few weeks. Devs, take note: THIS IS WHY YOU RELEASE GOOD MODDING TOOLS

I spent the $30 for CO. I'm not sure if it was worth it, but my God, I had fun when I was playing. It's a pain in the ass to get into a server, it's insanely difficult, the gunplay is often clumsy and awkward, and you will die to people you'll never even see that you have nothing against. It might be my GotY.

To be honest, after playing it on and off for a few days, I'll probably wait a week or so to see if all the CoD kiddies that think it's a deathmatch leave. It used to be a good chance that if you ran into a survivor, you were safe - you only had to worry about bandits. But now everyone shoots everyone. It's supposed to convey a feel of "you can't trust anyone", but at least you used to be able to group up with people. Now you really can't interact at all. I hope Direct Chat gets fixed soon (proximity-based VOIP, makes interacting with people much easier because you don't have to type out "friendly" and it adds a very personal element).

If you enjoyed S.T.A.L.K.E.R. you'll most likely enjoy this. Highly immersive, very realistic feel to everything. Totally open world, and the map is truly massive. Lots to discover and do. Be forwarned that it's pretty rough around the edges, because it's still an alpha. When it's done though... it's going to be amazing.

Saw this on rps the other day. Looks very interesting given that players are often more dangerous than the zombies, as they will flat out kill for supplies to keep themselves alive a bit longer.

Read the RPS article on this, and it looks amazing.

Sales for Arma II have rose a fair amount recently as well, pretty sure I'll be picking it up soon as I find it somewhere cheaper than £25!

Yeah, to be fair you should probably bring a friend to it. If you die you have to start all over again- which means a lot of scavenging again.

For the most part, players are cooperative though.

Also, it's not so much "another zombie game" so much as a survival horror game with zombies in it. Survival horror games are exceedingly rare, and ones where you have to or can work with others are the diamond in the rough.

Arrrrgh this game is stupidly amazing, but the master servers are down and I cant play. This must be how the d3 players feel .

I found out about it through Kilroy's video series, The Days Ahead.

So much hilarity and awesomeness.

I'd love to play this, but quite honestly, I can't bring myself to pay 30 bucks for ArmA II, a game I otherwise have no interest in whatsoever. I hope they turn this into a full-fledged, stand alone game, as many other mods have been in the past, but until then, I'll probably miss out. Or they could just give Arma II free on Steam the ability to play mods, but they probably won't do that.

I was very thrilled to see the guy behind this is an experienced dev, and not simply an enthusiast who lucked out. He seems to really love the idea of a sandbox game with rich player interaction, and I doubt he'll compromise it when the hordes swoop in and start begging for PvP limitations.

Maybe after EVE, Minecraft, and this, developers, and more importantly publishers, will start realising quest hubs, raiding and instanced battlegrounds aren't the be-all end-all of MMOs? One can only hope.

Man I played again today for a few hours. I hooked up with some reddit guys on teamspeak and we went to a store to look for loot. We spent 5 minutes trying to get the store without alerting some Zombies. We made it in but somehow alerted a single zombie. After we shot him the rest of the horde tried to get in the door and we shot them all up.

So we started to stock up on food, water etc. Suddenly one of our 4 team members yells "Ive been shot - Im dead Im dead!"
That was followed by a second shot. We all scrambled. After 5 minutes of no fire we started to do a check ok one alive up injured in the back, one dead, myself fine and our sniper fine.

I went behind the counter and then realised there was one too many of us. Two snipers on the ground, and no name tags.

I started to yell on teamspeak - "WHAT COLOUR SHIRT DO YOU HAVE WHAT COLOUR SHIRT!"

After a tense 30 seconds (due to the guy I was with not keying up on teamspeak because of panic) I finally hear.

"It's the guy between us!"

I took the shot.

We found out later that the guy must have had only two bullets left in his rifle, and had come in the back door of the store and just shot in desperation, without realising how many of us there was.

I'm in the same boat. I have no interest in arma and I feel like the arma engine actually has a lot of limitations that make it more difficult to get into. The gameplay looks really terrible in some areas.

If they made it a standalone game with less fiddly menus and more satisfying shooting mechanics I'd instantly grab it.

That mod looks pretty interesting. The next time I get paid I plan on purchasing Arma II and getting this mod.

WAIT!

It's on sale on Amazon! This goes for everyone else here. 50% off on Amazon, ending on I think the 29th. Got it today, installing overnight, getting the mod tomorrow and I'm set for the weekend.

Great mod, I've rarely seen a game that does the survival part well in zombie games.

Protip though:

Trust no one, unless you can organize a group off the game.

People will kill you for your food/water/supplies/weapons, and who can blame them when they're right there readily available, waiting for a bullet to free them. Also, never announce your position unless you are sure people are not going to kill you if you do so, even if people say they are friendly. Heck, I've tricked innocent survivors into thinking I was a friendly bandit, only to shoot them in back after they've helped me. Stay low and don't run around aimlessly, and have fun.

Edit: Got a decent story here.

About a week ago, possibly one of my favourite runs, I had a AK-M, Revolver, ALICE pack (best capacity for supplies) and enough ammo to last me a while, I went around solo being bandit, killing the occasional survivor for ammo or supplies. I grouped up with other bandits, having four in total, going on raids on cities/villages for parts and supplies to get a vehicle fixed up and working. In one of the raids we did on a village, we got ambushed by another group of bandits (We suspected them of being the ones who had control of the airfield). A short firefight broke out, but we were outnumbered and outgunned. We lost two of our guys, and decided to retreat, throwing smoke grenades to cover us and to attract zombies to them as distraction. We did make it out alive, albeit severely injured. Eventually, the other guy died to zombies while I died to a random survivor. Just another day in DayZ.

Thank you so much. $15 I can spare.
