I'm downloading ArmA II on Steam right now, and looking forward to playing the mod.

Incidentally, anyone interested in a similar (but more polished and advanced, since it's a full game, not a mod) FPS hardcore zombie survival/exploration game should look at The Dead Linger. It's going to go into Alpha (hopefully) within 6 months, and currently can be bought for $25 after they got 160,000 dollars on Kickstarter to keep the team working full-time on it.

Also - if we get some coordination, I'd love to team up with some fellow Escapist Day Zedders (ZED. IT'S PRONOUNCED "DAY ZED".) and dodge the horror stories of newbie players being slaughtered like cattle by the crafty bandits.

If there's enough like-minded people, we could start a User Group or something.

Cool, I think I own ARMA2 but uninstalled it after half an hour. Probably no Oceania servers though right? Might have to wait until they finish it to get a chance of those.
EDIT: No wait, there ARE a couple of servers running it. To Steam! Now for a lengthy download. :'(

Was going to wait to get it later but the fact that I have the original, and only need AO, which is now $10 on Amazon... I think I will get it.

Is it story time? I think it's Day Z story time.

This game is like nothing I've ever played, it is frankly amazing. Some of the things that happened to me and my bro while playing were incredible experiences which we probably would experience were there to be a zombie apocalypse.
Spoilered because wall-o-text
I shot a man in this game today. Actually I shot two. And do you know what I felt? Remorse. I felt bad about killing them. Random people I?ve never met or interacted with ever before. And I ended their virtual lives quickly and cleanly. Well, the second person got a face full of sniper bullet. The other one? Wasn?t so lucky. I could barely see him, and ended up hitting him in the torso. Not quite enough to kill him, but enough to cause all the zombies chasing me and my buddy to go and attack him. So he was a necessary sacrifice in my opinion. He died for our sins. Also the wanker shot at me first, so I was justified. The second one though, he was an unlucky bugger if I ever saw one. We were raiding a barn and we heard shots, so we sprint off into the woods. I see the guy, and I put a bullet through his skull. He was dead without even seeing me. We did however find the target? He?d killed just before I got him, so we split the loot and pegged it back to the treeline.

Another instance that amazed me was when me and my bro were raiding a police station for guns and ammo. I stayed up on a hill and ran overwatch while my bro snuck into the station to grab the loot and get out. Unfortunately he drew the attention of a couple of zombies. I zeroed my sights for a long range shot, take aim, and pull the trigger. One zombie down. Second trigger pull, other zombie down. My bro gets back up to the treeline and we exchange gear and head back into the hills.

Teamwork is almost essential, you can lone wolf it, but you?ll never have backup if a situation turns sour. Teaming up with random players is one off the most dangerous things you can do, surprisingly, as there?s nothing stopping them from shooting you in the back when they feel like terminating your agreement. Working with a friend in a VOIP chat kinda kills the immersion, but you can just wave it away by saying that you both have awesome radios? And that brings me to the main draw of videogames, for me at least. Immersion. If I can drown myself in a game, hours can pass without me noticing. Time will fly by if I let it.

The creator claims that this game is art? I?m inclined to agree with him.

My favourite instance however, was when me and my bro were exploring a town, stealthily looting houses and avoiding zombies, when we come across a bandit in a shopping centre. We stare each other down for a few seconds and I drop to the floor. Some idiot who was also in the town managed to aggro the zombies and drew them towards the shopping centre, he runs in the door, only to be reflexively dropped by the bandit, meanwhile, the whole town is now pouring in through the doors, and me, my buddy and our new banditbro are backed up against the wall fighting countless zombies. Eventually they stop coming and we continue looting the shop, and we go to leave. We all salute each other and then run off in opposite directions. Banditbro could have killed us easily, he was fully tooled up, or he could have left us to die, but he chose not to. And that was it. That was the last we saw of him. Without him we wouldn't have survived past the shopping centre. One day I hope to find him in his hour of need and repay my debts.

Really nifty, however I played the demo enough to see that the engine has severe deficiencies so I decided against buying the game. ArmA III was already announced by that point so I was much more interested in the new installment.

Not according to this interview! ;) http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/16/an-interview-with-rocket-creator-of-day-z/#more-108053

"RPS: Are we calling it "day-zee" or "Day Zed"?

Hall: Day-zee, we went with - I actually think the name is terrible, and I came up with it. It was really just a working name originally, but it started as a working name and now it has stuck. It's grown on me as someone came up with a new logo and so on. So perhaps it's not too bad."

I read that exact same interview mere minutes after I posted that, and I refused to edit it. I STAND BY MY PRINCIPLES, and I refuse to name my zombie survival game (until The Dead Linger rocks the world's collective socks off) after a rapper

Yesterday I was about to go into a barn to grab some visible food, and bam, there's some survivor crouch walking in there with a No4 Enfield. I turn tail and run back to the foliage and go prone behind it with my AK74.

I tell the guy, "Hey, Enfield in the barn, I'm friendly- let's go our separate ways" - hoping to avoid any gun pointing or any self-defense scenarios. The guy proceeds to wait in the barn for 10 minutes, then comes out pointing his rifle everywhere looking for me. I wait for him to turn around and leave, but instead he keeps walking around looking for me. He gets so close that he's actually pointing his gun at me unwittingly. I open up on his face (as I was only 5 meters away), and I end up emptying a whole 30 round 5.45x39 magazine into his head.

Only he's not dead, but he's leaking a lot of blood.

The game has a sort of spasm, and when it stops- I've got a bandit skin and the guy is laying on the ground covered in flies. The guy had 100 rounds of .303 and enough food and water to last any survivor a week.

I take everything I can and run away into a forest, and notice that my humanity is now -9000. (Previously 2500) I log out, and the next time I play, my humanity is 2650 and the bandit skin is gone.

If anyone else has stories, please do share. We all love good stories.

I don't mean to be overly critical of Bohemia Interactive- but this is essentially the same game I've been playing since Operation Flashpoint. I wouldn't be surprised if ArmA 3 is ArmA 2 with some minor graphical improvements, rag-dolls, and swimming.

The demo is absolutely horrible. If you want to get a feel for the actual mod, DayZ, then watch some youtube videos, or have a search for a stream, theres usually a few.

Some people are saying that this mod isnt worth the cost of arma II, and I totally disagree. I have no intention of playing arma II the game, only dayz and so far Ive gotten almost 30 hours (according to steam) of playing online, being chased by zombies and heart in your mouth gunfights with other survivors.

It's honestly some of the most intense gameplay Ive had in a very very long time.

I love DayZ, just not right now. This massive influx of new players has turned the playerbase into something worst the CoD. Everyone thinks it's a deathmatch.

I've never died to zombies, but my five day romp on my last player was ended today by someone in the woods. I never saw him, never heard him. Just the pop of 9mm and the "You're dead" screen. I lost so much kit, I'm taking a break before I myself turn into a bandit.

I'd heard this, and was prepared to dodge all human contact I saw. The very first game I joined, I headed inland and encountered 3 Survivors working together (it was night time) to gather supplies from a town, which they split equally and shared with me when I turned up, and were prepared to let me tag along with them, but I had to leave.

It wasn't a crowded server, and like I said, it was pitch black, so it's likely that it'll get worse on a crowded daytime server, but nonetheless - I wasn't murdered instantly by the first people I encountered.

I consider this to be a good sign.

ArmA 2 is awesome by itself, being an absolutely wonderful anti-thesis to the boiled-down CoD-style wardrobe shooter festival we've been wading through as of late. I'm glad it's gotten the exposure it deserves.

I'm going to check this out, sooner or later. But lads, take my advice... If you do get ArmA 2 for this, don't forget to check out the game proper, too. :3

I'm really trying to get into this game but it's so hard alone and I've found it's not even worth bothering during the night.

Any UK Escapists want to friend up on Steam so we can roll together? My Steam id is the same as my username on here.

The demo plays exactly as the Full game does with minimal graphics. Seen plenty of streams, a commendable modding effort but the engine troubles are too big for me to overlook.

The best Zombie mod I saw was the one where your head movements were separate from your mouse. Basically it used some sort of head tracker that allowed you to look around like you would in real life while pointing your gun in a different direction.

TrackIR.

ArmA 1 supported this as a native feature, and so does ArmA II.

Although if you ever use it, keep in mind that it can be difficult to use while playing as an infantry man. It's extremely useful as a pilot though.

I can believe that it makes things difficult, but my assumption is that with the Zombie mod it would be fairly realistic/immersive if you could get the hang of it.

You can look around like that by holding alt as well. Surprisingly easy and natural.
Yeah, I would usually recommend something akin to this for normal infantry play.

Also, an additional note to new players:

If an option such as freelook gets stuck on, it's because you have accidentally double tapped the key. Double tapping the key again will cause this to unstick. Applies to most of the functions of the game.

In other news, my character died yesterday, while crawling around the northern airfield. Unsurprisingly, there seems to be hand grenade spawns and every sort of weapon, device or consumable there. The bandit's survivor friend shot me after I emptied a stanag into his bandit. I'm fairly sure the zombie horde munching on that survivor's shoulder took him out too.

Tis' truly a glorious game.

Thats this one, you hold alt if you dont have the track IR and you can move your head separately.
